That line "I was hated by the world just for existing" is so resonant throughout the entire story and it really shows a lot of parallels in various characters' behavior in response to the hand that the world dealt them.

God I love Ymir's addition to the story, it wouldn't be the same without her. She could have easily been just another honorary marleyan but instead she was the total plot wild card amongst the cadets. Totally unknown to BOTH the cadets and the traitors and with a completely unique and fascinating motive.

Instant chills in the last minute of this video. Ymir was such a good character, RIP.

When Ymir was first introduced, I always knew she had a unique personality but never thought she would be the series' essential diegesis as i thought she was just a comic relief or a side character. But sike. It's all connected. Same as Historia, Sasha, Frieda, Bertholdt, and many others. Exactly why I love AOT because every character just matters to you and gets you so invested

With the character of Ymir, i realized this story wasn't gonna go the way i expected. She made me realize back in the days that every character can be just as complex and nuanced as the main ones. I cried for Ymir and i'll keep doing so because she was the embodiment of selflessness through her selfishness.

I liked her arc. The author said he enjoyed writing her or drawing her too as one of his favorites 😊

It's such an admirable thing for her to struggle throughout her whole life to come to terms with knowing that she can live for herself, only to ironically spurn her happiness to end her life on her own terms. Like you said, not many will understand her decision to leave Historia. Maybe she doesn't even understand it. But it was her choice, and that is the culmination of her character arc. She was able to choose to die as she wanted to die, and not many are able to say that in this story.

Just like the founder, she took on the burden of others. But unlike the founder, she found someone to live for. Hopefully the founder will eventually find a purpose also.

I always saw Ymir as the precursor to the founder who finally found the answer to the suffering the founder went through. She really went through a similar experience but was able to finally decide she'd live for herself and do what she believed in. Even though she still wound up sacrificing herself in the end, it seemed to be on her own terms rather than an indoctrinated stockholm syndrome type of thing. It shows either great foresight on Isayama' part or the revival of an important thematic analysis that further defines the show. A great character all in all.

Ymir is genuinely one of my absolutely favourite characters ever. She would be honestly great as a friend or a lover, because of her honesty and kindness.

Yeh the only person who choose the way she lives, other than letting this fucked up world decide it for her, mad respect to the most selfish girl

God tier is insane. She was somewhat interesting, but it would have been better if she wasn't sidelined for so long. Her entire story arc started and concluded within 9 episodes, and within that time she makes many erratic decisions that don't feel as realistic as say if Eren was to act brashly or if Mikasa did. The creator did well to extract the lesson being taught from her arc, but it just feels rushed so it's hard to give the character "God tier" status.

This is a much more hopeful interpretation of Ymir than I've had. I guess because I never really saw 'a lack freedom to choose' or 'following your will' being the struggle for her. That happened with the original Ymir, but this one's sacrifices have always been of her own volition, in my opinion. When she lies and sacrifices herself for her cult followers, no one is forcing her to do it; she does it because she sees the faces of those who truly believe in her and has compassion for them. And the same happens when she hears Berthold's cries for someone to find them. To me, her story is more of a tragedy of a selfless person that tries so desperately to be selfish after being beaten down by the world. But despite her efforts, this is who she is. Her selfless nature can't be repressed, and her compassion for Reiner/Berthold's situation pushes her to make one final sacrifice.

YES! I've been telling everyone for years that Ymir (Freckles) is my favourite female character in AoT. Though I would've liked to have gotten more of her, I really admire the striking and unforgettable impact she was able to make during her brief moment in the series. She's one of the few characters who can say they found some freedom and selfishness in the agency they were able to exercise in the best way they realistically could, given the rough deal they were initially handed in life. And as sad as the world of Aot is, 'freedom' and 'selfishness' are difficult notions for a lot of the cast to conceptualise, so Ymir (Freckles) really stuck out as a shining exception. Thanks once again for the video - now I can have something I can forward to my friends!

I personally never consider it romance. I know it was romantic on Ymir’s side but it was never confirmed for Historia. I honestly prefer it that way. Just because love is there doesn’t mean it has to be romantic on both fronts.

Ymir's character growth and this entire arc is very underrated in the fandom and so is the dynamic and relationship between Ymir and Historia so i love that you decided to make a video on it!!

Ymir is one of my favorite characters in the entirety of Attack on Titan, and this video does her and her story justice. Great stuff as always ^^

I LOVE YMIR. Her love story with Historia is so beautiful and heartbreaking. She’s genuinely one of my favorite characters and, while relatively short-lived, she had one of the most complex and lush background stories. I wish things could have been different for her; it would have been so nice to see her and Historia have their own happily ever after.

@@shawnellesmith To be honest There was way more romantic feelings with YmirXHistoria over Violet and Clem in Telltale's the walking game the final season. You want to talk about a strong friendship bond between two females, that game is it. And Violet is one of your romantic choices in that game and the two characters barely had anything to be considered a "romantic" attraction/relationship. At least in this series/anime I can see more of a romantic pull with Ymir and Historia over Violet and Clementine. One how Historia hints 'No matter what. I will always be your ally' that is code words for I will always love you no matter what happens. Plus how it look like Bartolt took Historia's whole world away when he took Ymir as he follows his buddy Riener. And when Historia touches Ymir's love letter she is reaching out to try and feel her tough through those words on the page. Actions speak louder than words here. And it is through Historia's actions she loved Ymir right back. And the whole time she was praggers with the farmer's child, she looked like a caged woman and unhappy. Like someone took her sweet soul away. If you look at her facial expressions during her pregnancy, she looks unhappy, depressed, and a hallow version of herself and nothing like that firey spirit she had in seasons 1-3 with Ymir being alive. Ymir and Historia were the only confirmed romantic shipping in this universe besides Eren and Mikasa. And I got to tell you..from coming from Telltale's the Walking Dead, this wlw pairing so much better and beautifully told that got me a straight woman reaching for the damn tissues. It was nice to see a wlw shipping that was not forced in for sake of having more gay out there in mainstream media and actually had a direction of storytelling. I never bought Violet and Clem's romance in game because there never was buildup for Violet and Clementine to even have a romantic connection. Just bam 3.5 hours into playing and they now have romantic feelings for one another out of the blue. At least with AoT there was moments to buildup Historia and Ymir's romance.

This is a beautifully made video on one of my favorite characters. I only came to understand and appreciate Ymir on my rewatch and I love how S2 is basically about her which leads us into Historia's arc in S3, where Ymir is not present anymore but her influence is definitely there.

Thank you and Isayama for being brave enough to embrace the beauty and importance of selfishness. I've been through a lot this year, and one of the main things that helped me heal was learning to put myself first. And like you said in the video, nobody will ever be there for you more than yourself, so it's probably best to treat yourself as number one, as you would a partner. I've also discovered that I wasn't fully able to appreciate other people until I started loving myself more, I guess a person who hates themselves can't truly love others.

Ymir is my favorite character in AoT, glad more people are appreciating her.

For me Ymir is in my top 5 of the SNK characters since she for me even tho she was a minor character did one of the Biggest impacts in the show. Without her eating Marcel that would give Renier the resolve to do the mission and helped Historia to become her own. Ymir x History forever!🥺❤

I just love how a character that barely had any screentime in season one turned into one of my favourites in the second. Just because you're a side-character in Attack on Titan, doesn't mean you're playing second fiddle or are just reduced to an accessory for the main ones.

Ymir, after what she went through. she give up in to kindness and became a selfish person who only cared about historia and herself. but she changed her mind since Berthold and reiner were in pain. her heart couldn't be selfish anymore. and she changed his mind about helping them both, she thought being kind wasn't as bad as she thought. because even though she experienced bad things like hell, she could see the light and meet the angel girl (historia). good bye ymir. you are well written the best of all the aot characters. people worship levi but you are the real badass. devil but has the heart of an angel.

thank you so much for this, there's such a lack of content abt Ymir even though her characterization is absolutely beautiful. though I must say, even if she had reasoning behind her sacrifice in the end, I would've loved to see her remain in the story. considering her life sort of parallels the founder from whom she got her name, and historia being a descendant of said founder, they could've played a much bigger role in the storyline. I don't really appreciate how both of them were kind of pushed to the side after season 3, I feel like they could've contributed a lot later on.

Thank you for this video. What brought me into this lore was Ymir and Historia. Finally, it is a lesbian love story I can get behind and was not forced to satisfy the gay crowd for the sake of having representation. cough cough Telltales the Walking Dead the final season, cough cough. Both Historia and Ymir had something going for them that I wish was more developed or seen in the finale where they met in the paths. Ymir and Historia to me were the Rose and Jack of this universe. And to be honest Ymir and Historia had more chemistry of something deeper than friendship than Mikasa and Eren.

Is it just me? Or while Ymir can functioned well as a Jedi, she can become a Light Side Sith as well? The only reason the Sith behaved as such like in the movies and the series is because they go too far. But Ymir never went that far.

My best guess is that it would cause a ceasefire of sorts. The Marleyans went to Paradis with 4 Titans in the hopes of capturing one and were on the verge of returning with only 2. I imagine that this would have inspired a full-on invasion of Paradis. But if they only end up losing 1 Titan then they would have seen invading Paradis Island as too risky. This pretty much worked as the only reason they eventually went back to Paradis is because they united the entire world against Paradis.
