    The winding of the yarn on the feathers seems extremely tight (only a few millimeters distance between each loop). Is this based on historical findings? If so, do you know why it was done this way and not like practical examples today with fewer loops/windings? The feather already stays attached nicely with only a few loops with a centimeter between each loop for example. It does look insanely cool in any case!

  • @longbows

    @longbows

    Hi, Thanks for watching and commenting. The binding, as it's called, is less tight than the examples that all `Medieval` arrows are now based on, that would be the finds from the Mary Rose, which, makes the examples people follow technically Tudor. You would have to ask the Tudor Fletchers of the time why they chose to bind so tightly together; I am sure from their 100s of years of experience they knew what they were doing.

    You could avoid people trying to pull the arrows by having one in full display. Perhaps the mannikin could hold one in its hand.

    Great video, as always. Interesting comment about the side nocks; I’ve noticed that a side nock fits well with a bowyer’s knot where there is more string (coiled) on one side. What do you think? Perhaps this was the rationale at the time. Great fletching and binding on the arrows by the way.

  • @longbows

    Thanks for the kind words. The side nock is on the top nock, not the end with the bowyers knot.

    Interesting bit of trivia, they actually did not draw and knock from the back quiver, the back quiver was for holding more arrows to refill the sidequiver with when it went empty. If you can prove me wrong I'd appreciate it, that way I'm not just typing my fingers off.
