Thanks for sharing your experience. I’m looking hard at one of those and you answered my biggest question.

You're welcome! I still have both and love them both. Check out my other video on my channel because the gray one's lid warped after this test and being in direct sunlight. Yeti replaced it but i tend to keep it out of the sun now and use the white one for heavy sun use. JD

Great comparison review! For my needs ,which is just keeping ice for a weekend, 3 days max, a darker cooler would work for me with no issues. I thought there would be a big difference. Thanks again!

Thanks for the review man, I wondered that myself, I want to get a charcoal cooler but I have been hesitating because like you, I thought I would be hotter inside than my desert sand color. Cheers 🍻

Thanks Martin for checking out the video. I can tell you if I know the cooler will get a lot of bright sun exposure I typically take the white one because the lid on the gray one warped from this test. Yeti honored their warranty and sent me a brand new one but since then I take the white cooler when we go to the beach/vacation etc. Gray cooler looks great though for sure. JD

Wow . . . I would've never guessed those results. I was kinda leery of buying my 'Charcoal' M30 soft Yeti because of the heat concerns. I wonder if the 'fabric' and lesser insulating properties of the soft cooler vs hard cooler would have a greater effect when it comes to darker colors in the sun. I got the M30 for storing perishables when I camp, and plan to use the cheapie cooler for waters / gatorades etc. that aren't as critical to keep cold. Good info, thanks for doing it.

I’d love to see an internal temperature reading of each cooler. Ice melt could be the same, but then temps could be different. Awesome video - thanks for posting?

Michael, thanks for the comment. I didn't post internal temps (didn't take a reading) and the external temps were 70 degrees on just one day and then 80 degrees progressing to 90 degrees. The coolers were in direct sunlight until about 3pm every day. Glad you liked the video.

You should have tested with them in direct sunlight. That might prove your theory in a more dramatic way since dark colors absorb sun rays

Great video! A lot of us really appreciate you taking your time to put this together... we were all thinking the same thing. And we may all still be right. While the results may very well be marginal, if in some sort of a pinch... assuming the white one still continues to resist thermal radiation from the outside, and they both have just water left over, then the white one may still limp along to provide quite cooler temperatures. It would have been great if you had taken the temperature of both on the last day, and then one more time the next day. While this difference would/should hardly affect anyone's decision on choosing which they prefer (besides maybe being too hot to sit on)... It would still be fun to split hairs, and find out which comes out on top! As a matter of fact, it would've been great to have a lid temperature reading being that all of the "cold" is at the bottom. Ambient temperature does make a big difference as well... You should do another one, and literally weigh the ice 🧊 out with a digital scale, and add in temperature readings each day... then you could put any question about color differences to rest, along with finding out just how marginal the difference is... I still say white is better. But if you did care to change my mind... I will certainly be happy to participate in your content! It would be awesome if you made that happen! Thanks again for the great video!

Great comparison. One observation: you opened the charcoal one longer each t8me which allowed the cold to escape maybe that lead to the small difference. I’m debating on a Yeti haul or the roadie 48. Can’t wait to see your comparison vid.

I’m it wouldn’t seem to me that being up against the house, at least half the day the coolers are both in the shade. I had a charcoal roadie & a white roadie. The charcoal roadie did not keep up with the white one when I did a similar test last year (it last 2 days when the white lasted 4).

Both coolers were equally shaded for about half the day for sure. I found them to be equal but maybe a different test would yield results like you had? Makes sense to me the white cooler would perform better. Thanks for sharing that. JD

How was the weather during these days? And the sun? Judging from the camera angle, they didn’t face direct sunlight. Or the days were rather cloudy? I may be wrong. You’re the tester. I just want to see the data haha

Jonathan Mok they were in direct sunlight every day until about 3pm. When I shot the updates it was in the evening and the sun was behind my house. I think I state the temps in the video but if I remember correctly it was a little cooler the first two days (high 70’s) but then warmed up to mid 80’s the rest of the time. Thanks for the comment.

If you need wheels on your cooler, you're probably going to be opening and closing it 100 times a day. This is contrary to the true reason to buy Yeti or similar type coolers. It's about the prolonged need for ice retention. Think week long Hell's Canyon rafting trips or Deschutes River summer steelead fishing for 5 days or Colorado Elk Hunting. Repeated opening and closing severely degrades this capability. If you're going to the Jersey shore for the day who cares about ice retention? Go buy a Coleman from Walmart for your Coors Lite. These coolers are designed for extended field use with processed game or perishable food preservation in mind. Not Coors Lite. This is why people get mocked so often for buying these coolers....they probably don't really need them.

Hey Patrick, thanks for your perspective and view on the coolers. I agree that repeated opening and closing degrades the ice retention. I enjoy using my Yeti's for a variety of things, they are great coolers and have held up well and to me they keep things colder than some of the less expensive coolers. Thanks for the comment. JD

@@JDOffline I have several myself. They're like tools in a tool box. The right one for the right job or situation. That said, I often use my cheap Coleman with a handle instead of a Yeti for reasons already stated. Ice retention is not essential for the intended short term use and who wants to lug around a yeti if not necessary? Again, they're purpose driven tools. I just wish people understood that better.

Just a side note, it is easy to monitor opening and closing only if you are on the trip with yourself.

Can I just say for the rest of us, shut the fuck up. "You shouldn't buy a high quality cooler cause you're not putting deer meat in it, or taking it to the depths of the ocean for trophy swordfish". Yes that's how stupid you sound. Honest question. Does it work better than an average cooler at ALL TIMES? Or does the buyer need to sign a waiver saying they're the manliest man on the planet in order to be able to purchase one? Can women not buy them either?
