My wife and i were watching this to get a glimpse at the cabelas cooler. At the end of june we go on vacation to texas from fl. I told her aint no way i could do the review because each cooler would be missing 3 beers and the camera work would be shaky. 🤣

Thanks for the laugh. Hope you had a good trip.
that cabelas cooler reminds me of the old gander mountain, I used to have. thanks for the video.
Great video. I have been reaching coolers to make sure my hard earned money is spent well and this is good information. Thank you!
Fantastic test. I was totally surprised. Thanks for sharing. I know which one I will buy.
Although this is an older video it is great information. I have been wanting to get a yeti cooler, but will now consider the Cabela one.
All I know is after day one I was just thinking of how those ice cold beers tasted!
Place 3-5 two liter frozen soda bottles on the bottom for a long trip. Add a 10lb bag of ice and see how long it lasts. You’ll be surprised. Blocked ice always lasts longer and you don’t get a ton of water in the bottom of the cooler since it’s contained in the bottles.
I won am otter box cooler last December. Have tested it 3 times. The first run held ice for 7 days. Second it held it for 5. It went on a boat run where it was opened and closed many times. The third gave me another 7. The locks seem to be more efficient and I like the built in handles. No rope on the sides. Great cooler.
I put a 20-pound bag of ice in my Coleman Extreme and let it sit (unopened) for five days. When I weighed what was left in the bag, there was still 18 pounds of ice. Good enough for me, and not $280!
Great comparison. Field & Stream chose the Cabelas cooler over the Yeti too. The Yeti is definitely not worth the $$$.

On average there is a $50 difference per equivalent size Yeti/ Cabelas. Without Yeti pioneering the design most of the others may not exist. I have both brands , have also seen Rtic in the field, all perform well in the field. Which is the real comparison, any of you only open your cooler once a day?
30 years ago, Coleman metal cooler, traveled using block ice. Keep mostly foods. Use ice pick/hand axe to chip ice for drinks. Block lasts longer than cubes. Drained water daily for washing hands/etc. Kept cooler in the shade, covered with daily wetted canvas tarp. Daily temps in the 90s. Needed replacement block ice on 4th day. Fetched via 25 miles on jeep trail, in 2 cardboard boxes, bungee strapped to rack on Honda trail 90, riding fast! Wrapped cooler sides with wool blanket, ice lasted about half day more. Still have, and use this cooler for adventures.

Nice! That’s old school my friend!
I am impressed with the Coleman Marine performance. I expected the yeti to easily beat the Coleman coolers. ( I am disappointed with Yeti).
Nice comparison. Thanks for posting this. You may have saved numerous people a lot of money. I find myself wondering if the color played at least a small part. The white will obviously reflect more sunlight. Hooray for the "humble" Coleman. I think they make great equipment. Tents, stoves, lots of their stuff I have for camping.

It would be hard to ignore that color played some part. Obviously white would be the best for ice retention but it does get dirty looking faster and some people need color style points. Life is full of color.
Thanks for the testing saved my time and money.

Great vid man. Thank you!
I think the yeti is over priced, the Coleman is 10 years old, I have an igloo that's at least 10 years old it had ice on the 6th day of vaca and 2 days were in the 90's and we did keep in the shade. but if a $70 cooler holds ice for 5 days you can buy more ice for the price of the expensive ones, great vid

You are exactly right. IMO very few people need the ice performance of the high end coolers. Majority buy them to look cool. Keep rocking your cheap cooler. I prefer my cheaper coleman coolers since they aren't so heavy and I never use it for more than 3 days and they all work fine for that.
Can't beat the colemans for value but I will say there is alot of variance. I have two xtreme5, one a rectangle with pull out handle in middle, other rectangular old school marine cooler. The main difference is the lids. The marine has deep seated lid that really seals and can last over 6 days, the rectangular one has a thin lid and just clicks closed, won't even last 2 days. If you can find em, the old marine cooler has been used on fishing boats for decades, those guys know what works. I randomly bought it one day at costco, never really seen them again

Yea, I am not a huge fan of the hardside Yeti coolers due to cost and I think there are better and cheaper coolers out there but I am a fan of Yeti as a company for how they interact with my local community in the Austin, TX area. I think they make quality products. My wife keeps buying Yeti water bottles and really enjoys them over some of the generic knockoff she has bought.

I've been on several 7-14 day camping / hunting / fishing trips where "getting more ice" is at least an hour round trip. We use hard side insulated coolers (yeti, cabelas, rtic, etc.) for ice storage to cut down on "ice runs". We also use them to store game / fish. The gaskets and latch systems keep other critters from smelling and 'investigating' what's inside. But for weekend camping trips to a KOA that has an ice freezer 50 yards from your camper? Yeah... no.... those coolers would be a total waste

Yedi is in cahoots with ice companies. Great test. Could also keep the ice in the bag with small holes in it and could easily measure the ice after a day or two.
To be a bit more scientific and fair, there should be a proportionate amount of ice to the inside capacity of the cooler. It appeared that the Yeti had much more air space after the ice addition than the other coolers, so yeah I would expect it to tap out earlier. A more realistic approach would have been to fill the coolers to capacity because that's what most folks do before embarking on a multi day trip.

I like Yeti as a company. They support my profession and started in Austin where I live near. I am not a trendy guy so I buy what works best for my needs. I don't need a cooler as nice as a Yeti so I use the Coleman for my uses. Yeti owners are very defensive of their coolers when pointed out they don't perform as well as they should for the price. To each their own. Buy what you want and what you can afford.

Try the NEW IGLOO's With the Diamond Plate Strip on the Front with Same Rubber Fasteners, Thick Walls & Lids similar to Yeti & Cabellos. Price comparison Same Size coolers Yeti $350-399 VS IGGLOO $125-159. To my suprise the Igloo holds Ice longer than the yeti or Coleman. Save your money & drink cold beer longer or you can get a DUI making extra ice runs.

Nice, well done test!
I have 2 of the 70qt. Coleman Xtremes, the newer orange and grey ones with very tight sealing lids, and like them a lot and can't beat the price. Unless you have them loaded in a car, just leave the drains open, ice keeps longer if it isn't sitting in water. The ice will melt of course, but you'll still have some left after a good 4-5 days.
I enjoyed watching this. Which ones have hollow lids and which ones have insulated lids?
I have a YETI and it doesn’t impress me with it ability to keep ice . But the Cabela’s cooler definitely impressed me .
@billykana

I agree on both accounts. If precooled both Yeti and white Coleman I would bet the Yeti would win. Maybe some day I can make a video testing that but I am just terrible at producing videos.
I have the Cabela's 60 qt. cooler. We use it for the 75 mile shopping trips to Marquette Michigan. I place Artic Ice's XL Tundra series packs in the cooler. Ice Cream and frozen foods stay frozen all day long. Even other items in the cooler get down close to freezing temperature. I also have a 10 year old Coleman cooler and it actually performs almost as well.
I'm an engineer. To be a truly fair test, each cooler should face due South with plenty of distance between them. I saw the blue Coleman shading the sunny side of the Cabella's early on. Might not make much difference, but it makes it a more fair test of each.

Solid blocks of ice last and really helps the other ice last. I do the same.
My own experience is that the amount of air space left in the cooler after everything is in it , makes a huge difference in ice retention.

That white Coleman extreme is a heck of a deal
Thank you for sharing. I'm not surprised by the Yeti results. When the Yeti tumbler cups got popular at my job all the nurses purchased one and had them personalized. Really pretty. Too much for a tumbler I thought. So I bought one from Walmart and decorated it myself. Guess what?? My ice lasted longer!! 😁
They all went past 2 days and that’s good for me.
Considering the cost of a Yeti this was an educational video. Glad I did not fork out for a Yeti.
Igloo doesn't make bear proof coolers so I got the 25qt cooler from Cabelas, has holes for padlocks as well as those securing rubber latches, nothing is getting into it.
Did you close the other lids as properly each time as you did the cabela's?
Here is the thing I like about the test. All coolers got same amount of ice. To me it does not matter if say going camping for a weekend the air space in the cooler. You buy a bag of ice or two not buy ice to fill it up all the way. So in the real world the yeti because of the air space will melt just as fast as the two cheaper coolers. Also much heavier to lug around. Only Advantage I see on the two high end coolers is durability. I liked the Marine cooler here the best. The Cabela's coolers are impressive & the new ones have that pressure release now which is nice. But for taking a cooler which I am looking at on my boat to put some king salmon in I prefer the coleman marine for the room to put the fish in & weight of cooler. I have some like 20 & 15 quart coolers I take with me for sanwiches & drinks & they keep ice two days with about a 10 lb bag of ice pre cooled night before. So why pay $400 of dollars when you can pay less then $100 & easier to get it around.

even with the foam coolers dont get cold enough to store food barely gets to or stays at even 5 degrees
We have the cabelas 60 qt icechest, they do keep ice for a longer time than a cheap ice chest, but they are heavy , would not buy a bigger size because of the weight. The do have wheels on one side, great idea because of the weight, roll instead of lifting the heavy ice chest. HEAVY ICE CHEST!!!
Who has a cooler of beer for two days
If I owned a yeti, I would be too happy about this. Good test, with VERY surprising results, but as they say, challenge your assumptions! You DONT always get what you pay for!

Thanks you saved me some bucks.
Would there have been a difference if the yeti was white in color?
Yea, you can pre chill a cooler all you want, but the most important prep you can do, is bring the cooler inside to the a/c for 24 hours, and let the insulation get cooled down from garage temps
I got one thing out of this that mattered to me. I'd suspected that brown plastic is the wrong color for the lid. That may be true but apparently, it isn't a big deal. I will assume then that the light blue of my Yeti is even less of a problem. Mine is the smaller 65. It spends its days in the sun, over macadam, 50" from the exhaust outlets on my Concours. Typically several hours per day are with wind blast and engine heat. I drain the melt regularly. I try to park in shade, and to use my body as a shadow when the lid is open. We buy one bag of ice a day under such conditions, typically 5-7 lbs. If the weather is up where he started this test, the miles get long, or the cooler is being used to chill warm things, we might buy a tenner, but there isn't always room for that much. (It isn't hard to find someone who can use extra ice when motorcycle camping.) In short I'm surprised at how quickly he was able to use up 40 lbs of ice in a Yeti.
@billykana
5 жыл бұрын
I think a big part was all the extra air space in the Yeti. It was the largest cooler in the test and they all got 40 lbs of ice so that left the Yeti with the most air space. The color also didn't help but it is what I had on hand.
I wonder if the Coleman extreme lasted for so long because it is white. It might have been reflecting a lot of heat.
depends on how cold the ice was stored before purchase also what type of ice crushed or cubed 35 year ice man here, peace
Not a fair comparison. The Yeti had much more interior surface area to pass heat to the ice. Also, leaving them in the sun (which nobody with any sense would do in real use) gave the white coolers an unfair advantage.

It’s all depend on the seal. Do a test hold your face to the cooler in front the seal and drop the cover about 4” and hear the sound. I tested all of the yenti 75 and only one had the best sound and blew air in your face as it closed. It had a fuump sound and the junk seal had a hitting sound. I pick the best 75 yenti with the good seal. And I can put a 10 lb 199 bag of Walmart ice and it last me 5 days and taking a a 1/2 cup of ice every night. Just cold water the 5 day If I took the bad seal of the same cooler I bet it was your test yenti. It’s a 3 day cooler. Do this test when you buy.
