If you don't pre-cill the drinks to near freezing 33 degrees, and prechill the cooler half the ice will be melted right away to do just those 2 tasks. For a day trip, it's fine because you only need it for half a day. If you need it to last for a 2-3+ days you really need to pre-chill everything.

@@msk3905 No doubt a bunch of overhead, but durability. You can beat up Yetis pretty bad and they still do the job. I own Yeti, Orca, Igloo, and Rtic. Rtic fell apart and so far, no issues with the others. I don't anticipate much issues since I am pretty good about taking care of my things. In fairness to Yeti, all the cooler makers recommend the prechill, etc to max out the cooler.

I got one of these recently. I did "pre-chill" the cooler first by placing several igloo ice-packs the night before use. So far there is still ice in the cooler after 3 days. I did drain about an inch of water. The cooler stays in the back of my 4Runner. You really do need to follow their instructions to get the ice to last more than several days.

Being that there’s no drain plug, what was your method for draining the water with contents in the cooler. I’m thinking of getting this cooler but this is one of my concerns.

@@alf.quijano7582 you can do is fill up the cooler as much as you can with ice, the more airspace on the top leaves room for warmer air. Also I put mine in the freezer not too long before maybe an hour. Makes a big difference

The better the cooler...the thicker the insulation, the more it is an absolute necessity to follow the instructions, whether it be Yeti, Grizzly, Orca, Rtic, Canyon, even Ozark Trail. Your ice is sitting against warm walls and warm drinks. You didn't give it a chance. The ice will do nothing but melt as it tries to cool the warm beverages and the warm walls of the cooler. But if the walls and drinks are ckose to the temperature of the ice, it will melt MUCH .more slowly. And if you use blue ice packs on the bottim of the cooler as Yeti instructs, you will get a about another full day's worth of ice before it is all melted. To give the cooler a fair evaluation, do a "real world" test following the manufacturer's instructions and you won't be poo-piping the cooler

Any cooler is not going to perform that well if you don’t chill the drinks or pre chill the cooler. It’s simple science that if you put warm drinks in a warm cooler and then add ice, a lot of the ice is going to melt absorbing all the heat from the warm drinks and cooler. Thats why they say to pre chill the drinks and the cooler itself.

I am also in the Market for a 24 type cooler and am considering the Roadie 24 among a few. I am curious about this cooler: kzread.info/dash/bejne/l4J-yKd-YdrTkbA.html Igloo BMX 24, half the price of the Roadie 24. It doesn't look as easy to carry as the 24 and will have to sit in the backseat of the truck, but seems based on the review more ice life and at half the price. Plus drain plug. Not knocking Yeti, I own almost two dozen of their bottles and cups. Just haven't bitten on the coolers...... yet.
