Yesterday (2019) | Who are the Beatles?

Ойын-сауық

Aspiring singer Jack Malik (Himesh Patel) is about to discover he is the only person on Earth who remembers the legendary band, the Beatles. After his release from the hospital following a bus accident, Ellie Appleton (Lily James) gifts him a guitar. Jack plays one of the Beatles’ iconic hits, “Yesterday,” and his friends wonder how he came up with it. Maybe his troubles aren't that far away...
Film Synopsis:
Jack Malik was just another struggling songwriter...but that was yesterday. After a mysterious blackout, Jack (Himesh Patel) discovers he is the only person on earth who remembers The Beatles! As he rockets to fame by passing off the Fab Four's songs as his own, Jack risks losing Ellie (Lily James) - the one person who has loved him and believed in him from the start. Before the door to his old life closes forever, Jack must decide if all he needs is love, after all. Kate McKinnon and Ed Sheeran also star in this romantic rock 'n' roll comedy from Academy Award®-winning director Danny Boyle and Academy Award®-nominated screenwriter Richard Curtis.

In this movie, I could suspend my disbelief regarding a magical world where no one heard of the Beatles. However, it is utterly IMPOSSIBLE to believe that the main character wouldnt be immediately madly in love with Lily James.

I'd much prefer this. The Beatles are mainly beloved for what they did for music. If they didn't exist music would not be the same today, which makes this film paradoxical. And if they *were* to somehow never have existed and started out today, their music wouldn't be as big as it was. Music has moved on from that era. I and many others would like the music but they would not be the global phenomenon they were. And that's where the film loses me.

This scene was really nicely shot. Especially when they showed scenes from the area, not just focusing it on fhe people at the table. It grounds the scene in the real world and maybe reminds us of a particular time when we heard Yesterday and it had a special resonance for us. Also, this was the first time I really was struck by Lily James' loveliness - probably because she was in everyday clothes and she sparkled in them anyway.

What an amazing movie. This movie shows how lucky we have all been to have enjoyed the gifts we have been given, like the Beatles. The story line is fantastic, and the nostalgia it creates is remarkable. I don't care what others say, I loved this movie! I think the thing we can all take from this (especially in todays environment), is to be thankful for the gifts we have been given, and not to take ourselves too seriously, after all it's hard to "IMAGINE" a life without the Beatles.

Carpenters first hit was a Lennon/McCartney song. The Monkees wouldn’t exist. The list goes on.

I used to have this theory that Ed Sheeran was actually a time traveler who came back in time to write/perform popular songs before their actual artists could think them up -- because his songs vary and can sound like other popular artists of this generation. So to see him in this movie about someone stealing Beatles songs in their absence felt like a real rubbing-it-in-your-face move by Ed.

Based on the number of comments praising this movie I don't think it is as much of an unpopular opinion as I once thought - I love this movie and this scene. It is a fantastic way to show what it's like hearing The Beatles (in general) and Yesterday (in particular) for the first time. The acting by the ladies is amazing. The subtle downward eye movement just after the 2:40 mark shows her reminiscing about a "yesterday" that more than likely nobody but her knows about.
