What hit me the most about this movie was the feeling of hearing these songs for the first time again through the actors reactions and realising how big they are. After hearing these songs all my life it's easy to take them for granted or just listen to them on "auto pilot", not thinking about it, but while watching the movie you really do realise the impact they have on you and how magnificent they are. Damn, the Long and Winding Road was like a punch to the gut. Unbelievable what The Beatles did, the music and art they have left us, damn, there's nothing like it.

thanks for putting it into words. i just watched the movie for the first time over the weekend, and realised the same thing when we got to this scene, as well as the scene where he plays the long and winding road. it was such a refreshing feeling to hear the songs anew through the actors - for those few moments, it truly was as if i was hearing these songs for the first time in my life. thanks to such masterful execution by the cast and crew (of course, in no small part, the material they were working with aka The Beatles' songs, was already so moving)

Absoultely correct. I take for granted the Beatles because when I was born they've already played all their songs. But a l l the pop music we listened in the last 40 years should give a credit to them. And I'm sorry I can't listen to their songs as it was the first time.

The more I rewatch this scene, the more I appreciate the cut to their surroundings. We often do remember exactly where we were and what we were feeling when we experience a song like this for the first time. The children and pets laughing and playing, the breeze rippling through our hair, boats lazily passing by, possibly the smell of food being prepared drifting from the windows, a pint in the safety and comfort of the presence of friends: all important details without which this scene would be less impactful. Beautiful.

I thought Paul and John grew up together. I know that George joined Paul and John, Pete Best and some bass player to form the Beatles where they hit the club scene in West Germany for a while. But they did not achieve stardom until Ringo took over for Pete Best and Paul and George split the bass work.
Her reaction is on point. She's hooked from the first line and demands to hear more. As he finishes, she's as breathless as she is confused , wondering if he really did just do that, forever captured by one of the best songs ever written.
I find myself coming back to this scene quite often as it always feels like I'm hearing it for the first time. Idk if it's the actors or the cinematography during the scene but it's so well done.

This film gets the almighty holy blessing. The actors are all stellar, no small parts at all. The music is revisioned in a way that doesn't insist upon itself but that music brings us joy and experiences. Patel's character is well done to be humble and emotive through and through. I enjoy that the romance plot doesn't overshadow everything. The humor is well done by all. This is a film I return to all the time I'm happy it exists.
I love this movie; such a wonderful reimagining of the Beatles. All of the actors are terrific and the music is magical.
Honestly this one scene shows how important the Beatles really were. When he's playing Yesterday and everyone is transfixed by it and are on the verge of tears. The beauty and peace of the Beatles inspired so many other bands and I'm sure the world would be a far darker place without them.

Easily one of the best scenes in the movie. I'm not much of a Beatles fan but I love the premise of this story. As some of the posters have said the reaction of his friends and GF are priceless. Wonderful writing and direction.

I resisted listening to the Beatles until I was 27, and finally being fed up about the adulation they got, did some digging on what was considered their artistic high water mark and ultimately landed on Revolver. The first two songs of course I was familiar with, but then I'm Only Sleeping Came On and it knocked me on the floor. As a guitarist for over a dozen years at that point, I couldn't figure out what the heck was going on with the song structure. Became a massive fan pretty quick after that. Two years later my vocal teacher, a trained opera singer, had a similar reaction when I brought that song in to learn.

Man I LOVE this movie. I don't know how many times I've rewatched this movie.
“Of course it’s not bloody fix you carol it’s work of art” best quote of the movie in my opinion
The beauty of this movie is that it shows just how timeless Beatles songs are. Even now...it give me goose bumps.
I love this film just because I like to imagine hearing these songs for the first time, ever, absolutely stunned.
I've heard this song countless times, still makes me tear up because I feel like we all deal with regret from saying the wrong thing and it hits that memory so hard you can't help but latch on to that feeling no matter how painful it is

The way his smart friend says “the Beatles!” while waving his hand at Jack, causing the group to erupt in laughter, feels like a nod to how Ed Sullivan famously introduced “The Beatles!” to his audience. Since in this alternate universe there is no Beatles, this is the alternate introduction of the Beatles to the world.

Brian Wilson certainly wouldn't have torn himself apart on his competition with Paul's songwriting. And countless artists wouldn't have been influenced by the groundbreaking Helter Skelter. But even beyond that, other british invasion bands would either get more recognition for influencing the 60s culture or have none at all, as record companies everywhere were looking to imitate and bottle their style.
Something about this movie really got me for some reason, can’t stop thinking about it, and also fell in love with the Beatles again, so glad I watched it, thank you.

This is the first beatles song I heard when I was in middle school. I had just got into linkin park and metallica, testament. Yesterday really hit me with how well a song can just hit you. i listened to it over and over just walking up and down my block with headphones on.
I've watched this so many times now and all for Ellie's reaction! Such an amazing actor
This scene is sort of a breath of fresh air, in a way. Yesterday is a song like "jingle bells" or "happy birthday to you." It's so familiar, you don't even hear what is being said anymore. This scene really captures a newness of the song...like you're hearing it again for the first time. Look at the actress' face at 1:10. She's holding back tears! There are so many songs, books, and movies I wish I could go back and experience for the first time again.
Seeing fictional reactions to Beatles songs as if no one had ever heard them before, and knowing without a doubt that the reactions are realistic....it just makes you realize how magical The Beatles were.

Did she win any awards for her performance in this movie? She should have. She absolutely sold it. And not in just this scene, the entire movie she was just 'spot on'.
The Beatles (the band), came and went in my lifetime. It took this movie to no longer take their greatness for granted.
I've known this song for more than 40 years and only now I realize just how much punch it packs! 😮
This movie was so touching and it chokes me up a bit in many parts...I'm 60 so I caught the entire Beatlemania ride...And I've spent a lifetime with their music. I fought back the tears in many parts; especially the Lennon part...The day he was murdered is still very vivid and shocking at the same time to me... My younger sister was murdered in 2013.
