Wow! Quite a venture to go through this work by Yes - Gates of Delirium! The band got a new keyboardist Patrick Moraz from Switzerland who lasted just thru this one album Relayer, after Rick Waksman had left over artistic differences regarding the prior album Tales from Topographic Oceans. So for Relayer Jon and the band decided to go in a more experimental direction. I think it’s pretty cool! You really should review their next album Going for the One - especially the masterpiece called Awaken. The album Going for the One has Rick Wakeman back in the group. “How can you remember and reproduce a song like this?” There are many ways, but the way yes normally did it was to record it bit by bit, and after recording it they worked out how to do it live. If you try to think of it as 5 shorter songs strung together, it makes it easier. I’m sure that in your band you have memorized hours worth of music. So what’s the difference if it is 10x2 minute songs or 1x2 minute song? It’s still 20 minutes. That’s how I look at it.

Frank Zappa would often record the group to going off the rails into these wild improvisations, and THEN chart it and get them to learn it. Apparently, with the first three minutes of Close to the Edge, Jon did exactly this, it was directly lifted from a crazy jam session and he got them to learn it.

I MUST RECOMMEND the Keyboards Patrick Moraz's solo album "The Story of i" concept LP released 2 years later that is the epic lil brother of RELAYER with many similar moments and geniusly fuses brazilian Samba rhythms & percussion with ProgRock. I am sure you'd love it if you enjoyed this!
