Yellowstone: The Terror of Change

In which Hank has some thoughts from Yellowstone National Park, one of the coolest and most dangerous places on Earth.
In a weird way, this video is a response to John's about the refugee crisis. Anything that makes us confront that cliff of the unknowable that we exist upon every single second is scary, especially when I have known so much safety and security all of my life. But maybe the truly terrifying thing is, when faced with the reality that some people have fallen off that cliff...have lost everything, I often look to my own terror that the same thing could happen to me, rather than the hope that I can help rescue them from their fall, and whatever disturbance that brings to my (admittedly precious) stability is worth it.
Change is terrifying, but it is inevitable.

Some well chosen back-country camping sites interspersed with daily visits to the more touristy areas will give you an amazing experience. The park is massive and you can easily spend every night in a place that looks nothing like the other areas you saw. Ask the park rangers for their opinions on the best spots!

+Tank-Loving Guru If / when there is a supervolcano eruption, I think I'd honestly prefer to be at ground zero and SEE it for a second than die in the ash slowly over months like everyone else. When it blows, it will impact the entire planet and life will change. We have a decreasing number of days left to enjoy the World as it Is right now. If you are staying away because you understand how powerful the supervolcano is, maybe it could help you consider how certain you already are that this era is the only chance to get to admire it before the entire region changes forever.

Fun story : I used to work and live at Yellowstone as a room attendant for Xanterra! I lived there roughly 10 months out-of the year. I worked at Mammoth Hotsprings then at The Old Faithful Inn and the one thing I heard from guests every 90 minutes was "it never gets old, does it?" When they'd see it erupting from the Skywalk or the balcony. I always said "no, never" so I wouldn't spoil the magic for them but in reality the cold truth of the matter was that, after living there for 6 months- it had gotten old. Not in a boring way, I was never bored by it but it had become a constant for me. so reliable that I almost forgot it was there. My coworkers and I frequently went on hikes on our days off sit beside a geyser and wait for it to go off for hours and hours. these were the geysers that went off so rarely that Park rangers could only tell you roughly what day or what week they would go off. Those were often smaller then Old Faithful and overall less impressive, but because we'd waited by that one geyser for 27 straight hours we appreciated it more. Because we knew it hadn't gone off in over 10 years we felt special to watch a 1 foot tall little nameless geyser go off for two minutes. People are weird. Side note: leash your dogs at the park folks I have seen many a poor doggie die from jumping into Hot springs and getting boiled alive. It's as horrible as it sounds. Also... leash your kids too. I've seen lots of bad burns mostly on kids hands because they'd see the cool colors in the water and reach out to touch it while dad is snapping a picture of a bison skull at the bottom of a clear spring on the other side of the boardwalk.

I also visited Yellowstone this summer and it was certainly a once-in-a-lifetime experience (quite literally if we acknowledge that it's constantly changing and today's Yellowstone will always be different from tomorrow's Yellowstone). Though despite all the plaques I read and all the park ranger speeches I listened to, it was never brought to my attention that the whole park basically sits on top of a volcano (which no doubt contributes to the lush wildlife there). Very interesting!

r red I may not have said it as eloquently as I could have and so my meaning is being misunderstood. I don't mean that it needs to "look pretty" I just mean that is more difficult to read and I've also heard many critiques that this new format is more difficult for those with dyslexia and eyesight issues to read. I don't mean it's ugly as in it's lacking polka dots or a nice pink border, I mean ugly as in it's changing the look and format of tumblr into something most users do not want and didn't ask for.

People who have depression or any mental disorder really, have literal chemical deficiencies/imbalances in their brain and need those pills to get their brain jump started on trying to balance itself chemically.some people can eventually go off of meds if their brain starts to balance itself without the help of meds, but if their brain can't, they'll need to stay on meds.

Okay change isn't inherently bad but this tumblr update kind of is. The tumblr update could actually be really nice with a little bit of change (remove the pictures, push the lines closer together so it takes up less space)--I don't want to go back to the way things were. There are a lot of changes people WANT on tumblr, but we never get them. I think sometimes, yeah, people are scared of change and will settle down after a while, but sometimes it is a bad change, and people just get /used/ to it. That doesn't mean their initial reaction was the false one, but that people will adapt to anything.

antivenompene Dyslexia is set off by pictures, bold, italics basically anything distracting from the text itself. The pictures and lines break up the comments so it's harder to follow the "flow" of words. The names are bolded when they’re really not the important thing and draw your attention, again breaking the flow.

I'm allowed to have problems. I'm allowed to not like the tumblr rework, that my charger is downstairs while I'm upstairs, my fridge has nothing that I want to eat in it. Yes there a bigger things, yes the ground beneath our feet isn't as constant as we like to believe, but we a re allowed to have problems, and be unsatisfied with what we have or what is happening. It is what you do with that unsatisfaction that defines you. Do you wallow in it, or do you go on to do something. Do you maybe make a new tumblr where it looks how you like, or did you just reblog something about how the new tumblr is stupid. this started off somewhere, and moved somewhere totally different...weird

This thoughts from places resonated with me strongly. It was very beautifully thought and worded. There are few things so constant and universal in life as change - and yet we all have a tendency to feel as if what we know or have now is permanent. Just, great video, Hank.

Hank this is an amazing addition to an already astounding body of work. It's rare that a single video in the seemingly endless stream of information that each of us observes on a daily basis reminds us that nothing is constant. As a math student, it is partially my job to find out what exactly it is that is always changing. However, I am told that it can only be one of a few things. This video reminded me that everything changes, even the very ground that we stand upon, and for that I just wanted to say think you. #HankGreen2016

I was just there a few weeks ago, and every shot you montage-ed I recognized. (So cool!). The thing that I brought away from Yellowstone, Hank, was that there seemed to be such an immense beauty at the intersection of the elements. Where water meets magma, you have geysers, hot springs, steam vents, and mud puts. If you think about it, many of the most beautiful places are where waster and earth meet.

Yellowstone is an absolutely amazing place. When I went last summer, we spent one day looking at geysers and hot springs, one day at the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, and another day at Mammoth, plus hiking and swimming in a river. It was unforgettable! Hank, I would love to see more videos about the national parks! You live so relatively close to some of the best- Yellowstone, Glacier, and even Wind Cave are close enough to visit. There is so much to learn and enjoy in the parks!

Wonderful, poetic, and a great philosophical reminder. Thank you Hank for reminding us of a/the greater context. It's amazing how wrapped up we can get in our desires and angers and outrages of what we think or what we want or how things "should be." When nothing is truly permanent... thus dovetailing into that philosophical Buddhist invitation to consider that attachment is the root cause of all suffering. "We are all standing on that cliff beyond which there is nothing... until there is." Perfect. Thank you.
