In case anyone is looking for PY153, it has been discontinued. Some people are getting lucky with finding old stock, but Schmincke has replaced it with other pigments in new tubes. The only brand I could find that still currently makes a PY153 is Sennelier (Senn. Yellow Light). This pigment was discontinued in most brands after the mainstream manufacturing (for automotive) stopped around 2012. Some had stockpiles of pigment that lasted a few years and it looks like Sennelier may have the last of it or their own private manufacturing. It's a lighter near-lemon close to the primary yellow PY74 instead of this deeper PY110 Schmincke golden-orange color. Sennelier's is lighter, more transparent and wonderfully lightfast in case any other pigment fanatics want to check it out :)

I have Nickel Azo Yellow on my palette and so far I feel like I don’t need any other yellow. It just mixes so well with everything. Also when mixed with purples this yellow beautifully shines through the mix. Yellow is not my favourite colour in watercolour, but this is definitely my favourite pigment.

Nickel Azo Yellow is my favourite yellow, both for mixing and on his own, it's so lively and incredibly transparent. I also use Schmincke's rutile yellow as a soft cool yellow and for it' s more opaque qualities. Very different yellows for very different uses but I like having borh on my palette.

I keep falling in love with Daniel Smith's watercolors more and more every day and it always breaks my heart because of how expensive they can be. Of course they're well worth it, but it's a matter of having the money for them lol.

I have a few DS colors too, and while they can be expensive, they also have much pigment and 15 ml of watercolor paint will last a long time (for me at least). I have the split primaries and three earth colors, and the sap green for convenience, and paynes gray for value studies.

3-4 years into watercolor and experimenting with all the colors, learning the pigments I realize that color isn’t the big thing in paintings. It’s range light to dark. It’s a skill to develop not a product to buy. Oh well.

Thank you for another great video. I love nickel azo but PY 159 is very fun for it's granulation. You can mix it with diox. Purple for example and get a color that granulates out as both purple and yellow. Although PY 159 does have a lower tint strength it makes some very interesting mixes because the color separates out in most cases.

Thank you, that was very interesting! I’ve got Transparent Yellow (PY150), Aureolin Hue (PY151) and Transparent Orange (PY153) in my (transparent) Schmincke palette. As mentioned in another comment, I recently bought their Transparent Orange and didn’t even realise that I got the old version. I like all three, but Transparent Yellow (PY150) is my absolute favourite. I didn’t go for their Pure Yellow (PY154) as I already have Winsor Yellow (PY154) in my Winsor & Newton palette. It is very useful for mixing, but on its own I don’t find it as exciting as the other three pigments. I’ve also got a PY155 (Permanent Yellow Light, from Lukas Aquarell 1862), which lies between Winsor Yellow and Schmincke Aureolin Hue.

Yellow Orange by Schmincke is now made with PY110, I think. I was thinking if getting a tube of Winsor & Newton Gamboge (PY153) but it has been discontinued. I used PY154 and a touch of Pyrrol Orange to get a warmer yellow. Thank you for sharing the comparison of the different yellow shades.

@@brigitteitg You were lucky to find a tube from an older Stock! I didn't manage to find a half pan with this pigment sadly. But I think it's good to have Transparent Pyrrol Orange (PO71) or some kind of Pyrrol Orange (PO73) to mix it with PY154. This can work if you have just one yellow on the palette. The mixes are good enough for me. 😊 I can totally live with that.

@@Christine_R I just tried to replicate it and got a close match with Winsor Yellow (PY154) and Winsor Orange (PO62), though the mix looks flatter. Your suggestion of mixing PY154 ( I used Winsor Yellow again) and PO71 (I used Lukas’ Permanent Orange) is a better match, as the PO71 gives it it’s smoky undertone that I really like.

Hello there Teoh: ❤ I hope you see this on time! I have till tomorrow to choose a middle of the road yellow, and since where I live I dont have art stores to help me, I have to buy online! Could you help me? I prefer is from Daniel Smith cause 95 of my palette is Daniel Smith, but I do have some Holbein. Just so I can explain what I need, let me tell you that, as my cool yellow I have Holbein's Imidazolone Lemon and as my warm yellow, I have Indian yellow from Daniel Smith Please help me fix the "gap" between those two! Which yellow can I get that is like a middle of the road yellow, between those two. Something, transparent, and no granulating. High lightfastness is not an issue, cause I paint in skechbooks, just for me, as a therapeutic aid, and I'm bedbound which makes life hard, yes, BUT, at least, I can still paint in bed and want to be happy about my colors. 😊😊😊 Please help.
