Holds a lot of wood, you can get a 26-inch log in but it really works best with 18 to 20-inch logs that are 14 inches across the center... Even dampening it off it'll run you out of the house... Has 10-inch ducts to each room... If you load it up you can melt snow 2 foot from the basement of the house on the outside... The wife wants to get a new or newer one... Thanks for sharing. I just got the Oslo 500V last fall. Overall I am happy with it, but I found if I let the coals build up too much (which are nice to have to get the fire quickly going in the morning), the stove different get as hot. I feel like I am turning it into😮 a smaller stove by reducing the exposed burn area of the metal sides and back. I'm really puzzled by the ash pan. I just don't use it and let it stay full of ash. When I emptied it once, a bunch of ash from above feel into the void and I could not put the pan back in. So I had to vacuum it out. No problem that day since the ash was cold, but if it was hot ash it would have been a real problem since I don't want to be vacuuming hot ah or buying a special vacuum. I to like smaller pieces as they are easier to place. I did cut a bunch of my wood at 12" so I could put them in NS. That just seems so much easier than using the side door.

    I've had the F500 v3 since Aug 2020, what I've found to work well is after the overnight burn, I use a flat shovel to move the ash/embers around so whatever falls through the grate goes into the ash pan. There has always been big enough embers that stay up in the stove to do a restart without "relighting." I usually crack open a window to allow a better draft until the flue heats up. I then empty the pan every morning prior to reloading with wood. I dump it outside in a metal pail so the turn around time is pretty quick, than empty the pail when that gets full. If I'm primarily burning Ash wood everyday is almost necessary, other well seasoned hardwoods you can go two days, "usually" between pan dumps. Just for the few moments that I have the pan out, not enough falls below to prevent the pan from going all the way in so the door can close. Doing this, I hardly ever have to clean under where the ash pan goes.

  • @AlfonsLC

    @AlfonsLC

    The stove is a bit picky and when the coals get too high. You have to open all the air up and they pile up. Also. Its a good idea to clean out the air inlet holes and passage a few times a year. Or the stove is so air tight it may put the coals out and you will have a stove full. Keeping those holes open and clean is important for function. Also. You need to empty the ask pan more is all it means. And only after you raked the coals to let all the ash drop. I empty mine every other day during lots of burning. It’s been way too long since I’ve made videos. But I do have the third video in the works likely to be released in the fall. And i will cover these topics

    The Jotul F500 Oslo is our second Jotul (after our old Jotul #6) and we're happy with it. However, I watch the Jotul F500 Oslo on KZread and they all have very clean window. That's not the case for us. After a few hours of operation, the window turns dark gray and we can't see the fire anymore. What should we do to correct the situation? Our wood lighting is like most of those on KZread, but unlike them, with a flame that burns upwards, our flame comes back towards the glass and that's where the grey deposit (soot) builds up on the glass and prevents us from seeing the fire. Thank you for your suggestions.

    No one seriously using a wood stove for major heating places it in a cellar . Wood stoves are for heating areas where you spend time; local heat. Sure "heat rises", but.... In a cellar most of the BTUs pass out the foundation into dirt. In over 12 years with the Oslo ( and another stove in another part of the home ) we never used the front door since the ashes pile up and fall out when loading. Experience.

    Just curious, how well insulated is your house?

  • @AlfonsLC

    @AlfonsLC

    It has basic insulation under the siding only. The walls are old plaster. No insulation between the wall and the plaster. The windows are brand new and well sealed. The basement wall is completely on insulated also on the side that is not in the dirt. But that is something I will address this winter likely

    A Guy Named Alfons ah okay, yeah insulation will make a big a difference. I wish it would get colder here in southern Louisiana (Just to have a fire of some sort) but not while in my current house. It’s well over 100 years old and only has 10KW of electric heat. I spray foamed the attic and under the floor and it’s made a huge difference as far as cooling, but the single pane windows and 11 foot ceilings still make it difficult to heat whenever we get a cold snap. Since we have nat-gas available, installing a furnace will be our next purchase. Been putting it off for other expenses.

    @@jaysson1151 well. At least you have access to the best boudin down there. I work in the natural gas industry. Lots of Louisiana guys up here. They eat well. My house was built in 1899. Also very old. But it had some good updates that i will continue. After a cold bight shift. I am sitting in front of the stove right now getting the fire going again before I go to sleep. It held a bed of coals for over 14 hours and is not putting out any heat but a fire is quickly started. Its a great comfort to have in the cold. And i love the change of seasons up here.

    Are you sure i cant imagine ? A spark can come from anything and set fire to any home at any moment. On the rare occasion this stove throws sparks. You keep the door cracked until finished. Even when thats not being done. Those sparks dont travel more than 15 inches from the open door. The wood is 7 or 8 feet from the door. Either way. Caution isnt a bad thing. You do what you feel comfortable and i will do the same.

    You overheat your stove again and again - it must work close to 50% full, not full of fuel - there is no place to properly burn and gas circulation. All this cause you problems with glass.
