So Peter McKinnon contacted me on my Instagram and I would really like to post his perspective here! By the way if you go click on the channels commenting here you will find some of the best small KZread channels out there! Yo! Just got recommended your video about me and other creators. Watched it! Just wanted to say thanks for watching my videos all this time. Appreciate that! Reminded me of a friend of mine that told me a few weeks before I started my channel that KZread was a bad idea. It had all been done, there were so many huge channels out there already to compete with , and that it was “too saturated”. I ignored them all. I absolutely believe if you’ve got something unique to offer, be it a way of presenting yourself, a different opinion, the way you see the world - that’s all so unique to you that, KZread can never be too saturated. Maybe it’s just a little more thinking about how to approach the broadness of photography from a fresh perspective. That’s what I did when I started. Never had plans of it ending up here! I think a lot of folks forget that yes, this is indeed a business! I started it, with the shooed that it might become something I could rely on. So of course there are ads and sponsors. That’s all stuff I dreamed of one day. Most of us aren’t looking to just work 7 days a week, putting in what we put in, paying staff, paying for a studio, paying to bring content together for zero return. So, ads are an obvious means to an end! You absolutely made some great points in there. I especially liked the bit about looking at the quality of the videos from the beginning and noting you’re already passed that. So true! Anyway, I thought it’s as worth finding ya on here and saying thanks 🙂 I hope you keep making videos!

Wow thats crazy that he heard of it so fast. I think you made a lot of awesome points, I myself have been having a lot of similar thoughts. Im not sure I ever wanted to be youtube famous, Ive just wanted to be appreciated, and known and really that probably just bleeds out from other things in life. But now I think Im content to have some paid gigs and maybe make some videos for myself if i feel so inclined. My tastes and desires are too eclectic to really be focused enough for the algorithm, and Im fine with that I guess, especially since I have no real desire to do any vlog or talking head type stuff. Money makes the world go round. If people don't get compensated in some way to do what they are good at, then they will have to stop doing it. Be happy your favorite creators have found a way to monetize their content creation so we can all continue to enjoy their work and they can afford to keep making it.

Hey Lane - I want to give you a perspective that might hopefully shine some light on yours. I watch Peter McKinnon, have done for years. I don't buy anything he sells, I don't care about using any of the kit he's using. I am a writer/director, photographer on the side. I don't need any of that gear or those products. So here's something to think about... I don't watch PM or MH or CH for the tech they sell. I watch those guys because the way their videos make me feel. They all have a similarity in the fact that they're all pretty happy go lucky Canadian dudes who have pretty infectious positivity. That's it. The key (in my opinion) isn't trying to set-up the world's most informative photography channel. It's finding out what people like about YOU. In real life as well as online. Bring us into YOUR world, make us feel a certain way that we don't when we watch other channels. That's how you find your feet, that's how you find your audience. Tips and Tricks are helpful hooks, sure. But look at Jonna Jinton - She's huge. She's a photographer. She never sells a single bit of tech, yet the feeling you get watching her material is very poignant. That's the source of her popularity. Focus on the vibes man. Not the £££. Go take a photograph with a pinhole for all we care. Go draw a damn photo on a wall! People will end up watching it if they feel good when watching your videos :)

Loved this video man! I think every photographer has had this same realization at some point. KZread is hard for sure, but like Peter said in his response, when you bring your own flavor to it, it’s priceless.

Great video mate. Not sure why or how this came in my feed but yeah i feel exactly the same. Casey was my go-to but there was always something and still is about Peter McKinnon too. I notice it in setups and backdrops like yours too, I can spot a fellow fan a mile off and you see many channels with incredible video quality, super cinematic etc that just dont do well for god knows what reason. Thats why i was always and still am drawn to Casey and Van Neistat, its about the story rather than the incredible cinematics.

On the slip side though, it is GOOD that youtube has injected new life into the camera market which really was dying a slow death. We can be thankful that we still have a healthy competition from manufacturers and even have a NEW player (Sony).

The truth can hurt but it can also set you free... it's your choice. Great video. Really felt that

I was always amazed by these guys videos as well. Seeing how much time that went into the production value of their videos was kinda intimidating once you get into it yourself.

Some great points here. I don't mind the ads, because I know this is their living. Some creators integrate ads well while others not so much. Then again many of the people paying creators for ads are very specific. But I am with you in the fact that so much of this content has made me think I need this camera and that camera and this light and in reality I jjust need to hit UPLOAD more. Subscribed, excited to see where you take this.

I kind of get the sentiment. I mean it happens with a lot of KZreadrs, they kind of go from feeling relatable to to megastars and the content changes. Peter's videos are what taught me how to use a camera back when he first got started. I loved that kind of stuff, then he moved more video centric and now it's like pit row F1 experiences which I am beyond happy for him and glad he found the success he has. In doing so for folks like myself and sound like you the reason why we liked these guys has kind of changes. For me now I look to creators like James Popsys and Sean Tucker, who don't really get to gear focused and just talk about the intangibles of photography which is what I value a lot more.

Yeah I think your right, it may just be the focus on gear all the time. I learned a lot from a variety of KZreadrs as well. I think it's just a strange situation since there is so much info out there now. My main concern is people falling down the camera gear rabbit hole. Thanks for commenting! :)

I can relate to this a bit - however.. Someone else becoming successful in your field doesn't mean there isn't space for others, it means that it's possible to become successful in that field.. If someone has a channel on a specific niche - it does provide value to cover new products being released in that niche. In fact - when some new product comes out.. I WANT to see peter's take on it, sponsored or not.. I was heavily inspired by these guys when I started but I work in the music studio world. If someone does a video that moves people - it isn't because of the product, it's because of the creator, and the storytelling, and presentation. The product is the feature. Having the same products as someone you admire unfortunately does not make you as "good" or even "similar" to them. It just means you have the same tools, now what you do with them is what makes you unique. I get a little bored when people have this perspective of, why are you promoting stuff everyone doesn't need.. Because no one needs any of this stuff.. hello.. We are creative people and it's fun to try and cover new and interesting things that are relevant to your work. When you work hard and companies in your field want you to to showcase their new product that's a sign of accomplishment and they think you will bring value to their company by working with them. It's not the creator saying you need this in order to be me.. lol. I've never seen any of those creators say anything even close to that. If you don't want to watch a video on a product.. don't click the video.. but if you like a creator.. and are curious.. watch it to support their success.. and use it as inspiration for your own journey.

I like your channel! So the assumption that people aren't working hard enough is not necessarily the case. Some folks work a full time job and then spend their days off working as a photographer or videographer or doing KZread. When creators only make a video when a new product comes out and all of them review the same product it's because they got paid for it. So the entire video is a commercial. We started with these creators because we loved their passion. I understand you have found a niche in the music business but not everyone will share in that success. But I by no means would tell them they are not trying enough or that they aren't good enough to make it! There are a lot of variables to the situation. Great reminder - I have to constantly remind myself to "use what I've already got," as you put it, and that everyone we admire had some kind of messy beginning.

Great video Lane, think you nailed it. I really hate how the whole internet is just a huge selling machine, and most KZread videos are just click bait to get views, but often don’t have anything to do with what their title says. I am in my 70s, worked for one company for 30 years in video production and photography, and feel successful and lucky to have done that, and still do freelance gigs quite a bit. I love what I do, make a bit of cash here and there, don’t have a YT channel and don’t give a crap if I ever do.

Word dude. You said what I've been thinking about years. I've never got into what McKinnon does because there is zero content for somebody that wants to get ideas for cinematic content and to learn new techniques. The constant coffee drinking intro with oversimplification of the need of equipment and the loud attitude pushed me off of that kind of YTbers. I'd just wish this video would get more views.

This was on point ☝️. 100% I think I'm going to take out my NEX 3N and dusty manual Minolta's, Helios, etc and take some nice pictures this summer. I had an A7 in my basket, and decided to skip it, had A7r II in my basket as it was supposed to be a game changer for my landscape photography (99% of my stuff), then I had A7r III in my basket... Never went for it in the end... Realised I like my photos just the way they are, I'm not making money off my photography, I do it for the joy of it. Going out there, pressing that shutter button and feeling good about it. The end result or a picture is not even that important, I have seen it, I was there at that exact moment, framed and edited in my brain, CLICK. What happens after is less important... It's like hunters, they go for a hunt, cooks take care of what happens next. Subscribed.

Great perspective. It's not the tool, it's the artist that makes things happen. I absolutely hate it when someone says " Your camera is awesome!" Will the right tool help you get the shot, yeah, but you have to quantify that tool or rent it for that job.

I loved your video. I am one of those who "grew up" watching all these spectacular KZreadrs, since their beginnings. And I have a similar reading: they started (like thousands) as one more, but different factors, including perseverance and some good decisions, helped them stand out and eventually become spokespersons for all these brands. But of course it is up to you to be able to understand what is really necessary to do the job (if you are a photographer or videographer) and what is superfluous or unnecessary...or at least dispensable. If someone goes crazy and goes bankrupt buying things, it's not their fault... but yours.

It's a bit of a meme at this point, but the saying: "gear doesn't matter" holds true. I get SOOO many comments on my videos asking about what camera to buy, or what lens to buy. We all care SO much about gear that it's easy to forget the things that actually matter.

I feel you brother. I got caught up on with all these youtubers saying you need to buy this or that. Spent probably 20k on gear. Im gonna sell it all and use "retro" cameras from eBay and lens and show others theres another way.

Great video and makes a lot of sense. I feel that they are now brands and that’s how they treat themselves and their channels and there is nothing wrong with that. It’s just that for anyone getting influenced by them needs to understand that you do not need all that they promote to get to where they are. What one needs to get to their level is the motivation with which they have turned up day after day and year after year to put out content. Again like you said even doing that you might still not make it but that’s just part of it. For me putting up content consistently on my channel is a creative outlet and nothing more. Wait! All of this is probably great content for my next vlog haha.

From the beginning I was able to keep my KZread and my photography separate (I am a commercial photographer by trade). When it came to KZread I have always posted what I wanted and purely for the enjoyment of making videos. I had some success but never sold my soul, I took a very few hand picked sponsorships over the years. I still enjoy making videos on topics I find interesting. Your video is spot on, the constant sell sell sell showed down our throats has gotten so annoying! I believe when it comes down to, do KZread because of the passion, if you love the process, the filming the writing etc, not because you want to be famous. The rest will come naturally! I don’t think any of them (Pete, Mattie, Chris, etc) planned to be famous, I think they were truly passionate about what they shared, they also had a unique support system within the group, which was something that probably helped a bit too.

KZread recommended this to me and I gotta say it was such a breath of fresh air. This is all very very true and it ends up being a mental battle with myself because I know all of this but I just keep postponing things and procrastinating wondering if I actually need those things and end up doing nothing. You motivated me to go out and do something with what I have without being stuck on the future or the outcome. The mind of a pessimistic overthinker, I guess. You are soooooooo right, these guys become selling machines, they are only poster boy now.

Lane you hit on many things here that small channels (our channel included) need to hear. Your gear should be simple, economical, the bare essentials to create cinematic video and audio. We started with a massive setup but quickly re realized in the field that stuff was too much. Sold the Nikon, went back to iPhone, SmallRig cage, some ND filters, BlackMagic camera app, and DJI wireless mic. Throw in Insta 360 Pro Ace for run and gun, and that’s it. Cannot stress enough the importance of good audio. Thank you for this video. New sub for you. Keep it simple, and like Casey said - the best camera is the one you have with you. Cheers!

This is facts. I started a camera channel, but realized that I wasn't adding anything to the space and I definitely didn't want to keep buying or renting gear for comparisons. The best thing to do is use your excellent camera skills for a more untapped niche in KZread.

I can understand where you are coming from, I started my youtube channel less than a year ago, I have been following peter for over 5 years now and I have been a photographer for over 8 years now, so I do intentionally or unintentionally try to replicate a lot of his style into what I do. But taking a inspiration from someone else and then moulding it into something of your own is what I think is the beauty of this artform really is. I am happy to be a part of it. The video was really good! 😊

It comes down to finding your niche, doing the work and enjoying the process.

Those websites like story blocks or epidemic sounds etc. Are how these guys make extra money. The only difference is that a commercial on tv, pays the network. The youtube marketing pays the creator. Its a business. I also want to point out as I was also like you at one point. I love what these guys were doing. The issue isnt that you need the gear and all of that. Its that you need a personality. Pete is energetic and upbeat and it makes people watching feel good. Which also lends into they buying of products they are selling. I am not downplaying your statements. Only adding my thoughts on them. Create for the love it. Be authentic and hope for the best. Becoming a "content creator" and being successful at it, is just as hard as trying to play video games for a living. You need the charisma and energy for it. Going to sub to your channel. I like what you did with this.

I agree with some of what you said, yes the market when PM, Chris Hau, and the like entered the scene is entirely different than today. The barrier for entry was lower because camera quality wasn't as ubiquitous as it is now, that's fair. BUT They were also making really valuable content. Tutorials, travel vlogs, and gear reviews are all things that helped US get into this hobby and make better videos than they did at the start. Nowadays you'll see that a lot of the videos they make have switched to a sort of mini-documentary style or more focus on their personal perspective. That's come from a response to the ubiquity of the camera market. People can still break out in YT, it just looks different than it did 10 years ago, and there is an even greater importance on sharing a unique voice with a unique perspective. As far as ads and collabs, you took a somewhat... for lack of a better term, "conspiratorial" approach? But it seems pretty obvious that ads pay for their lifestyle, and act as their income source. And collabs early on definitely just seemed genuine. Now I see the PM collabs as honest exposure opportunities for the smaller creators Peter talks to! How many people are suddenly aware of new film photographers from his latest vids?! It's awesome! I saw Pete DMd you on Insta, and I hope that you do keep making stuff too. This just seemed a little "down in the dumps" to me. I recommend revisiting why you started here :) And then focus on THAT and rediscover that joy of just making stuff.

No idea how this came across my home page. But I like the message. I’m of the mindset of, post here for fun and as a creative outlet. If money comes from it, so be it, if not then oh well. You earned my sub my dude.

I probably should make a video like this eventually. Especially dispelling the gear fantasy, and how most people think they can be like their idols with the gear. It's just not true, unless it's something specific like you need a drone for drone shots.

Great insight and knowledge ! A lot of folks get caught up with the hopes and hype of being able to repeat the success of their favorite idolized KZreadr. But sadly, KZread these days comes to pure luck in being found and your content being distributed. Almost 5 years and I’m finally starting to see tangible growth. Bottom line, do it to share you passion and creativity. Whatever comes from that, will be ok and just fine. Thank you for this video !

I enjoyed this immensely. I also wanted to do this, but I suck at vlogging or putting myself on KZread. I am pretty great at helping my local businesses succeed with their marketing video needs. So thats what makes me a living. Peter inspired me to do just that, turned me right around from a time where I almost gave up my camera for good.

The important message from this is to come to this platform and make what YOU want to make. That's the only way it's got any longevity ❤

I have a similar mindset and I have been talking to some friends about this recently. The youtube camera market is SO saturated and has become nothing more than sponsored videos. Although many of the big name camera channels are backed by very talented individuals, their channels have become nothing more than sponsored video after sponsored video, For example at the time of leaving this comment the last 3 videos Peter Mckinnnon has put out have been sponsored. Like you mentioned, its hard to say "no" to money BUT it seems like we only see these guys show up anymore if they are selling something. I miss the art,

I subscribed just off the mic sound alone but color grade and and content i also enjoy 🙏🏽

The biggest thing is none of the guys you mentioned actually got big on youtube doing photography... They got big showing you camera gear and tips on how to use your camera gear which is now pretty common knowledge. There are plenty of successful photography and videography channels but those don't do nearly as well in comparison to the "content creator" niche with all the next latest greatest gear reviews etc. They just show off gear in an appealing way ie travel, outdoors, exciting action adventure... etc! Now that these high end cameras are a dime a dozen and the new baseline for KZread quality there's nothing lavish about them and that big desire to know what's next has dramatically died down. Hence why people like Matti Haapoja got off the platform... they are beating a dying horse with those videos now. Peter McKinnon went film, half those other guys are all about their KZread courses now. It was largely an era brought on by the advancement in tech and there will be another wave of it eventually but it wont hit as big as that last one did!

Glad I stumbled upon this video, I remember discovering Peter's channel just as he was celebrating 200k subs and watching a lot of people say " Gear doesn't matter!, just start recording!" but as time went on and they get bigger and bigger you feel more and more left behind like what is even the point look how much far ahead they are? my life is not that interesting, I don't go on "adventures" worth filming! And the gear part I still agree with, you absolutely can start with just a smartphone still, I just think it's gotten harder and harder to find people that look like they really are doing it for the love of it instead of chasing the views, likes, subs and sponsorships. I shoot photos every day and post NONE of them just because of the anxiety that comes from thinking about reach, followers, growing, etc. I guess as long as you stay true to yourself and an audience finds you genuine, you have a real shot at "making it" otherwise the people see right through it and you'll never get past the gates of algorithm heaven.😂

I’ll die at my hospital management job unfortunately and got into it a little late but make enough money to have decent gear and pto to travel is nice. I found a few channels that gives me inspiration grainydays is one of my favorites enough to dip my toes in the film game. This video is great, glad you popped up on my feed. Everyone pushing that new new or saying “you wouldn’t believe this lens I bought for $____.99.”

Man, I’m not trying to be disparaging here, but your problem starts with your premise. You wanted to be someone else. Peter McKinnon became successful by knowing his stuff and being himself. Becoming KZread famous isn’t a goal. It’s a result of finding what works for you. I started following these guys to see what I could learn from them. I really like Manny Ortiz, but I don’t watch much of his stuff anymore because he started talking about how awesome Hasselblad is. Whereas I still watch Sean Tucker because he still puts out videos that make me think. You need to ask yourself, do you want to be a photographer or a KZreadr? It isn’t the same thing.

You have a point man. But McKinnon has been an idol for alot of shooters. And a lot of grew some misconceptions going along this journey, but we live and learn.

As someone who has Gear Acquisition Syndrome…. I needed to hear this! Great content! Subbed🎉

A lot of them also get gear from companies to use and sell.

Truly I tell you, Lane, you will not become like Peter McKinnon. But you can be the reason photographers want to become.

To be quite honest with you as a small creator of over 8 years, If I was to get successful I would definitely rely on advertisements and try to stop working full time. That is 100% my goal to make videos helping people and stop destroying my body and spirit driving a truck in Cambridge. I feel so distraught and so lost about the amount of time I have spent trying to get better at shooting and editing video. Although it quickly becomes empowerment, And I use it as fuel to keep going. I want to help people and I want to be successful.

Enjoyed the vid...i have a bit of a different opinion and the product stuff, never bothered. me. I've been following all of the same guys since Casey's Vlog. Wanted to go hard at one point....just enjoyed the content in the end. I have bought gear, don't regret most of it, I'm still trying to figure out my fit here if any, but life meets us all at different spots. I still think there is opportunity. It's a different hustle maybe, or maybe it's just making truly honest vids like this. It's all a journey and looking forward to seeing where it all goes and hopefully I can ride that wave when the time is right! Thanks for sharing your thoughts! (kinda wish I woulda went hard back then....but family and responsibilities were different...I have a couple years on you all...no regrets) ;-)

The “one more this , one more that” is called GAS “Gear Acquisition Syndrome”. Funny too how I read that these companies also don’t really care if they get a bad review, that people will still buy their product, and having their MERCH being talked about (in the ALGORITHM) is way more important than whether the review is bad or not :…..)

Thank you for saying this, I was a huge fan of Pete early on but when it became a constant flow of unattainable product marketing I fell off because I was able to recognize it right away, everything I watched became so perfectly polished because everyone was copying the successful guys like Pete and Matti, that it just got stale for me, not to take anything away from them they’re talented individuals but they just became so disconnected and I no longer felt like I could relate.

It got recommended to me.. probably because I just discovered Benn Jordan's videos and watched one on how much companies are paying popular KZreadrs to "lie" - do 90 second ad reads, say that they love playing Raid Shadow Legends etc... Well, a lot!

What do you think about putting affiliate links in your description, for equipment you bought, use and would recommend? It might be a slippery slope, I don't know!

Even though I have some pretty expensive equipment (I do photography for a living)... most of my KZread videos will have some bits and pieces shot with my phone... content is king. Authentic content is king. You're right. The "photo video KZreadr" thing seems a bit saturated and I am bored to tears by most of them, as it is all rehashing the same stuff, all kind of the same style, lighting setups etc etc. All VERY professional, but very very few will notice a KZread video being shot with a Cooke lens, as opposed to one shot with a Canon M50 and a kit lens. As long as the audio is clean and audible, the 32 bit flow really only impresses the one using it and hearing it back uncompressed on their studio monitors. The moment it hits KZreads aggressive compression... and people watching it on phones, tablets and laptop screen and speakers... it's all a bit excessive. It is awesome USING great gear, but it is not necessary. Unless your video genre is that of Potato Jet etc that has to have the latest, because that is what you are talking about mostly.

I've had the same thoughts for a while now! Very good video! Greets from germany :)

I started my KZread channel in 2018 in the photography niche and have 45k subscribers because of a very niche topic that I fell into, even though my videos themselves weren't exactly cinematic. But if I was to start over, I would absolutely NOT do another photography channel. The barrier to entry is so high - the quality of videos in this niche is insane, and I just don't have the time or skills to outperform all of those existing creators. Even someone who's a great photographer isn't necessarily a great KZread video-maker. I mean, to make THAT quality of videos means I'd have to do nothing else... I wouldn't even have time to practice my actual craft anymore. What I would say to other photographers who want to be KZreadrs is to use your photography skills to start a channel based on a totally different interest. I have a gardening channel that I barely put much effort into, but grew SO much quicker and makes about the same in AdSense as the photography channel.

Love your channel! You have really great information on your channel and congratulations on its success. I think the emphasis will move away from technology and move towards unique and creative concepts and authentic creators...... there are a LOT of peter mckinnon duplicates out there... If you've got something new to share and empower your viewers... it can work. But the space is changing and evolving INCREDIBLY fast... so it's definitely more difficult. Althought... solid props on pronouncing Matti's name so well... I cannot do that. My only suggestion is find a niche space... Good luck. You make many points I concur with... keep doing what you do...as long as you enjoy it... if you enjoy it... keep it up... #subscribed...

This is one of the first times I’ve heard such common sense from someone on the creative side of KZread. I’m 25 and have been freelancing since 19. I learned these lessons the hard way. Even though I learned most from McKinnon & Co back then. What I do enjoy from Those creators is the fact that they deliver information in a fun/entertaining show-like way. It is enjoyable to watch and great to learn from. But when it comes to gear… take it with a grain of salt. If you can’t do it with a 400€/$ or so camera, you won’t be able to do it with a 2000€/$ + camera.

This was one of the better videos I have seen in a long time. All of us are directly (or indirectly) trapped in a commercial echo chamber where G.A.S is ruling. The art of photography is now only a minor presence in KZread and everything is focusing on success, gear and technology instead. I miss the "old days" from back when i did chemical photography, my local photographic community... It had a different spirit, humanity and ambience that i sadly never found anywhere else since...

Yes I agree and thanks! G.A.S. is definately bad right now with the amount of new gadgets thrown at us and the thought of how much better my product will be with something new. We don't take the time to fully learn our cameras capabilities because the new version of it just came out.

Well you got yourself into a bind with this one :) It’s your most popular video but it’s not in your wheelhouse. I’ve been there. Just roll with it. It was entertaining but I think if you pursue something and put 110% into it, it’ll happen.
