This is just an awesome video of Early American Machinery. Well done Guys. I love to watch the Vintage Machinery still working. My friend and I are thinking about adopting the Sawmill at our Museum, so we can bring it back to life for everyone to enjoy. You gotta love the smell of fresh cut lumber.

I'm building an HO scale sawmill by George Silios circa 1975. You video was a great help in seeing how the machines worked.

Watching that guy next to that moving belt gives me the chills. One wrong move, the belt breaks, or his loose clothing gets sucked in, he is a gonner! I know of a person that had both arms pulled off their body! No joke! That machine won't even flinch as he passes through.

That " guy" you are referring to is at least 8' away and this mill is not to be worked at 21st century speeds. These fellas are producing quality lumber not modern day lumber cut to reach a quota. I'll bet there won't be a single 2×4 with only 1 or 2 square corners like we see here in MONTANA's timber country? I have 3 generations of mill workers on my family tree and not one of them has ever been hurt in a mill.

Nice work! I like to throw a few sacrificial sticks across the steel bed of my truck to keep fresh, wet lumber from getting that "Instant Rust" treatment. Especially red oak 'cause the tannins will eat away at the bare steel. Also, I like the "Drive Belt of Death". Guards are for wussies.

I wish people would take video of rest of mill they all show saw cutting log..i would like to see how it's able to cut the log..hundreds of videos showing saw cutting a board or log..butcno one shows to workings or it.what moves carriage and how..i know a few of them but still would like to see rest..a newspaper came out in the 1970,a I think about 75.took pictures.one of each saw doing its job by then crawled down and took more of had log got into mill from pond and how it got to pond then how the saw was able to cut log.picture of saw mandrel and then the three pulleys and what they did..one was carriage one sawdust conveyer and then the log haul.. Even took picture of twisted belt making it spin right rotation which was opposite of what other pulley was spinning.this reporter showed the twisted belt and did very good job explaining how you can reverse direction by twisting belt.some engines or tractors turned wrong direction to what was needed..no one shows that in videos. It's always the saw cutting a log..not saying it's bad video just saying you gave a taste now slide the hole bowl over so I can really enjoy the icecream

Yeah seriously, I'd have been anxious asf working in that space next to the belt. Really cool to see it work though, wish I knew how to build one. Been researching for weeks just to get a really good idea for a bandsaw mill and it's still rocket science to me.

The belt is what keeps you on your toes- dare you think you have a chance to lean on the job. Only takes 1 time & flipped on your butt, then sent 20 ' away into a big wheel. That fires you up for sure. Just like working in a cotton gin- lose your attention= lose your fingers. Sort of like the bozos riding the escalator belts at the mall.

When I was 16-18 yrs old, I helped on occasion only. I would stand close to the blade and grab the smaller pieces that would come off and toss them far behind me and get ready for the small 1Xs to stack them. Sometimes did peeling logs.

Love this saw..!! On the safety topic: Yep this thing is dangerous AND I like keeping all limbs attached as much as the next guy - But all this over-zealous "concern" for safety is a bit much sometimes. Our society wouldn't be where it is today if a few brave souls from yesteryear had been so afraid of risk. I say if you don't want your hand cut off - then don't stick it in the saw.....

I don't know of the term, but is this a Mill where you bring your logs and Mill them on the spot? I like the idea of that. Kinda like a public Mill. That's a idea. The customer could take all his waste too. Even bag up the saw dust.

It's great. However, having used a surface planer and circular saw during my apprenticeship many moons ago, with the riving knife in place, but often without the guard, these machines are much more dangerous than currently being shown. At least the sawyer's hands are nowhere near the blades in circular and horizontal band-mills. Driving belts need avoidance of course.

OSHA approved operation, I think not !!! Let's face the obvious fact that 60 plus year old men, clumsily stumbling around an open blade sawmill, is not the most ideal situation. In fact, that scenario is far from being such. That is, unless the local emergency room is in need of badly injured senior citizens to be used as training dummies for interns.
