In our new animated historical documentary we will tell the story of the first foreign samurai in Japan, the man from Africa, they called Yasuke. He traveled to Japan with the Portuguese missionaries and played an interesting role in the Sengoku Jidai period and in the life of the daimyo Oda Nobunaga.

Seeing a lot of dog whistle racism in your comments section. All these people using variations of 'We Wuz Kangs n Sheet' are using an meme from reddit and 4chan about black people claiming to have been royalty before being enslaved in the Americas. Some think that they are being clever by just posting the word 'WE' or other smal I'll snippets of the phrase. And it's sad that they are this triggered by an interesting moment in history, but also using the same tired phrase to express themselves publicly.

@@Develpup The problem is that Yazuke is a very interesting character but he is not the best historical figure to represent a samurai. He was under Nobunagas service no more than an year. Its not probable that he would be trained as samurais in such a short period. He was probably a good fighter, but its unlikely he would fight like the japanese did. Theres no record of him given a samurai armor and if that was the case, he wouldnt be using dreadlocks, he would be using a chonmage. This is not Yazuke, this is afro samurai. He is more in line with a fictionalized manga character than with an actual historical figure.

@@gastonmedici1029 Why does suddenly historic accuracy is suddenly extremely relevant for an assassin's creed game? Yasuke was a real person. He was also featured in numerous japanese manga/anime/works and their authors took creative liberties to tell their stories with him in mind. Why can't Ubisoft do the same without people whining? Nobody ever complained about historical accuracy with all the outlandish things that happen in these games. I've read the silliest takes from overnight history appointed experts who tried their best to downplay Yasuke's story, as if that justifies Ubisoft having the right to tell their story how they want it.

Why can’t they use an African nation like Mali to have a black main character? Actually, it probably had more to do with the Moorish empire. At that period in history, Spain and Portugal still had small native African populations, remnants from the Moorish period that had just ended. Many of the Moorish descendants were shipped out of the country and used as sailors and colonial servants after the Iberian inquisitions. Yasuke was no doubt one of those Moors commissioned into the Portugese navy. Hence why he was fluent in both Portugese and Japanese.

Japan was balkanized at that time, stood independently fighting each other. Oda Nobunaga is a Daimyo, which is head of one of those clans, but said to be the most powerful Daimyo. Emperor in Japan did exist aside from that, but didn't really had any commanding power over Japan. Any Daimyo could have killed the Emperor, but his pedigree is such a sacred figure in Japan, like Jesus, every Daimyo was so loyal and faithful that led no thoughts of even touching him.

Two things you’re missing historically are that He was being used as a bodyguard by the missionary, as it was common for missionaries of the time to purchase mercenaries or athletic slaves as guards, especially if venturing into feudal Japan. Second, the Japanese were fascinated by His skin color because older pictures of Buddha depicted Him with very dark skin, and since most of Japan was Buddhist there was an obvious likeness to their supreme teacher in Him, and yes He was a large athletic Man that probably towered over most of them.

Look up Memnon the great an Ethiopian King. Somali coastal cities for example are nearly 3,000 years old some of them and the Somali people have been using sacrificial zinc on the rain-guard their swords going hundreds of years now. All nations were formed by the original brown man("black" people/Hebrews are actually different shades of brown)! "Black" people are your creators! My people are god's erased from history. we have only few sentences about him on our record. About his skin color, about the seller and the buyer and about why his Japanese was terrible. That's all. Then why Black Americans keep saying all the source of this story come our historical records?? most of this story is nonsense. First of all, They don't even know what Samurai is. Samurai was a title given from your blood line. Not a rank that someone can give you or takes back.

@@quad9936 That's complete nonsense. Toyotomi Hideyoshi was a peasant before Oda Nobunaga hired him as a samurai. After Hideyoshi conquered all of japan, he commanded the 刀狩令, which banned peasants and monks using katanas. It is from this point that samurais are titled from bloodline. At the time of Yasuke, pretty much everyone could be a samurai.

  • @quad9936

@@user-ph8jc6wx2h Nonsese? Really? OK. Let’s check which history is nonsense. In many Japanese history books, Hideyoshi was recorded as a 足軽. 足軽 was obviously a rank of Samurai(A very very low rank though), especially by the term of 尾張's tradition. Just because people called him a peasant or very low class person at the time, it didn’t mean he wasn’t in a Samurai class at all. Exactly same situation of that foreigners also often say “How 石田三成 or 藤堂高虎 were samurai class?!” since they misunderstand about the title, Samurai. So the real nonsense is your _” At the time of Yasuke, pretty much everyone could be a samurai.”_ First of all, In the 信長公記, his name was recorded as “弥助”. This means he was just one of Nobunaga's many servants, not a samurai at all until he was gone from Japan.
