Yarnball's How to fish REDs Sockeye Salmon KENAI Russian River Getting set up

How to fish REDs Sockeye Salmon KENAI Russian River Getting set up I was out fishing the salmon run in Soldotna again near Kenai this year. Here are my set ups. I caught quite a few fish and even met a couple in the parking lot who had no idea on how to fish the Red run. I got them hooked up and headed down to the river. It was a slow run day, but we got our fish. They were extremely happy. Check out that video. Here are the rigs I use. These are fairly inexpensive and you need little skill. I prefer the yarn egg pattern as this is what I used steelhead fishing in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan, as well as fishing here in Alaska for rainbows and salmon. My buddies on the Kenai have renamed me Yarnball. This technique makes them quick and fast. No need to spend a ton of time at home pretying a bunch of crap you'll never use. Make sure you are not using a small number 8 hook on the kenai as it will bend straight. I believe I use a #2 hook. Tight lines and best of luck! I have caught some nice trout and salmon with this artificial egg pattern. Some huge kings and Huge Steelhead fishing the Root. I even Caught an almost 30 pound Chinook/king from the Lester River in Minnesota out of Duluth/Lake Superior in the Japp Hole. I got that one mounted, was pretty close to the MN state record and I was only fishing MN at the time. It was the Largest king I saw taken from Lake superior while I fished up there quite extensively for 10 years.

Thanks for sharing your hook-up with us. I wet my fishermens knot on my tongue before tightening to prevent line burn. Cheers, Billy in B.C., Canada

Good video for the yarn set up. I don't like what you said about the fly set up for beginners. I've been fishing the Kenai for reds for 30 years now and I just use the fly or bare hook with a bead set up and I always limit out. I use the split shot set up because I can change the weight anytime depends on the current and how high the river is running that day. I noticed that most people using the egg weight usually gets a lot more snags. Everyone has their own preference but using flies is definitely not for beginners.

It's called an improved cinch knot.

Nice beginners video. May I add the following. The “fisherman’s” knot is called a “clinch” knot, if the tag goes through the first loop. It is called the “improved clinch” knot the way you tied it. By putting the tag through the second loop. In any knot on mono or fluorocarbon line the line must be moistened before cinching the knot. Thus, eliminating the generated heat and reducing the line/ knot strength. A small plastic or glass bead between the egg sinker and the barrel swivel will insure the knot at the swivel is not weaken by the hit of the egg sinker on each cast. The rig is called a Carolina rig. I am sure lots of nformation on KZread about the Carolina rigs are posted. Here is an OK one……kzread.info/dash/bejne/pICIsbilnM7cl6w.html Should have moistened the line.

That hook is not legal for the Russian River.
