How to Fish for Klutina River Red Salmon

In this video, Scott Maclean, a fisheries biologist for the Alaska Department of Fish & Game, shows how to fish for red (sockeye) salmon in the Klutina River. He details where to fish, what type of gear to use, and demonstrates the fishing technique often referred to as ‘flossing’. In addition, he discusses the regulations and demonstrates the difference between a legally-hooked fish and a foul-hooked fish. Produced by Erik Anderson - ADF&G Sport Fish Division Region III. ADFG should require circle hooks for Sockeye fishing. No more snags and safer when it's crowded.

Ok, so can someone please explain to me the difference in snagging a sockeye salmon and flossing a sockeye salmon? Scott said for a fish to be legally hooked it must have the point of the hook inside the mouth, not outside, or anywhere else on the flesh. Flossing for salmon means that person is actively attempting to snag a fish inside the mouth, how can this activity be legal?? OR am I missing the point about the department selling license's so they can raise huge amounts of money directly and indirectly through violation fines?? Two years ago in Canada I had an asshole of a fisheries officer try to write a ticket for using a fly with a barb, I had crushed the barb off it with forceps but in his opinion it was still detectable. Right across the river were six first nations guys netting salmon that were protected at that time, but he was too interested in trying to write a $500 fine to the European who fishes there every year and kills zero fish. I told him his $500 fine will cost $5000 per year for the rest of my life, because I will never return, he thought about it and put the book away.

By your statement, the 1st fish was foul hooked. You hooked it on the outside of the mouth. js

If you watch the video he pushes the hook into the mouth to remove it so the hook pierced the inside.

I guided kind fishing here some 15 years with jet boat then the AK fish & game became far worst involved in corruption with the Cordova commercial fishermen who live out of state then shutting off the sports fishing on the Gulkana and the Klutina to allow more commercial fishing which wrecked the fishing tourism in Glenallen. It has been many years since I was here in the Glennallen area, but I hear the king fishing is still closed to allow the Cordova commercial fishermen to catch more salmon going to the Copper River, it is total corruption rotted in with the evil out of state commercial fishing that runs Alaska fish & game.
