Oh my goodness! I just taught myself to crochet a few weeks ago and am working on a baby lovey for my soon-to-be niece. I kept having so much trouble with the stitches and I thought "I can't be that bad at this!" I finally just convinced myself that my niece and sis-in-law would appreciate the gift simply because I made it and that it didn't have to be perfect. I got halfway through the project and was just so frustrated with it. I now know that I've been doing yarn under the entire time!! Thank you so much for this video! I could immediately tell a difference. Now, to go start this project over for the 15th time!!

Wow. I’m so glad you found this video. 😊 Have you found it easier to crochet using all yarn overs?

I have always Yarn under, for nearly 40 years, on 1000s of projects! Ive found if you do the same thing all the way through a pattern there is very little difference! It can affect tensions though and does require a close eye on gauging the lay of your stitches. If you find you cannot get tensions right, either too tight or too slack, just use a slightly larger or smaller needle, but always keep an eye on stitch size as it can vary to the inexperienced. I can do YO but I have always preferred the look of YU, it gives a flatter finish, especially on 'rounds' and a looser look to granny squares. At the end of the day, it purely comes down to personal preference and which ever you like the look of the most. Never beat yourself up about it, BOTH are right!

I have crochetd for 50 years and I have watched tutorials where the crocheter does yarn under and then yarn over. It is really confusing for beginners who are trying to learn to crochet properly. Thank you for clearing it up for them.

Iv crochet for 50 years also... I do yarn over in first half of stitch (any stitch)but yarn under in second half of stitch(after inserting hook).... I didnt know id been doing this.... Because instead of making another movement i just grab the yarn w/hook witch automatically causes a yarn under.... Iv done it this way for 50 stinking years it would take me another year just to retrain my hands.... So i think i might leave it be.... My projects come out fantastic sooooo... ❤❤

I have been "yarn undering" since day one, for 23 years. Every stitch pattern. My projects always turn out beautiful. I've only recently noticed a difference doing a ribbed stitch. So my curiosity led me to your video. So here's to day one of YO.

Oooohhhh!! So THAT'S why my first projects were so difficult!! I've been crocheting for a while now, but I always wondered why my stitches were too tight when I was a beginner. Then I realized I was wrapping the yarn around the hook wrong and it got a lot easier. But I had no idea YO and YU were actually different!

I've been crocheting for 50 years and I've never done a yarn under. Had no idea it was even a stitch. Never seen a yarn under in a pattern either. Wow, an old dog can be taught a new trick! :))

Everything I have ever done has been yarn under. I've never had a problem and I feel YOs are foreign to me. So now you've met someone who has all YUs.

My grandmother taught me that, really, the only difference is tighter stitches. So for a person who crochet's loosely, like me, YU is helpful to obtain gauge. For a person who crochets tight like she did, She would never us YO. The yarn still twist up the same exact way. YU is simply a way to tighten it up.

I have always 'done it wrong' according to the internet. Im not going to change it after 30+ years and 1000s of successfully completed projects. It DOESNT matter which way you 'do' it as long as it works for you! Enjoy your crochet and ignore vids like this. They are only made to fan the flames, so to speak...

I taught myself with yarn overs, and my great grandmother showed me her way of yarn under..I didn’t know that’s what it was called and this helped me understand a bit better...I may choose to use either based on what I’m making..and that is really the key..Your gauge can be completely off based on the way you crochet. I rarely ever take the time to comment, but I have seen a lot of people upset that their work is so tight they can’t get their gauge accurate. It is simply an informational video. A very factual one at that

I can't tell you how many tutorials I've watched, trying to learn a new stitch, and the tutor will say 'yarn over the hook', but as I watch them, they are yarning under! It's one of my greatest pet peeves, because not only are they doing it incorrectly, they are teaching whomever watches their video to do it incorrectly as well! And then they wonder why new crocheters get so frustrated!

WHAT I'VE BEEN INTERCHANGING THIS TWO HAHAHA. I thought doing either is just the same. Maybe this is the reason why my stitches looked different, I'm a beginner by the way. So thank you for this video! 💜

I'm glad too because I've got plenty of other stuff to worry about! lol I can easily see how finding topics to cover can be quite difficult after a while. For my part, I love any topics that cover the basics in details; with a good foundation, the more advanced stuff are easier to grasp. I also appreciate tutorials about reading crochet diagrams; a side-by-side crochet and reading tutorial is always so useful. Not everyone can do it clearly! I use yard under only for when I go when I go in the yarn and yarn over for the rest of the stitch the yarn under makes the base of the stitch a better tension. Thanks for the information.

My grandma taught me to crochet 45 years ago and she taught me YU. That’s why I kept thinking I was watching a different way. I have a very hard time getting my stitches the same size and now I think I know why. I’m just getting started again, learning the YO will help with my tension and stitch size. I treasure all of the blankets and ponchos and matching ponchos for dolls and dogs that my MawMaw made just as I treasure the hours she spent teaching me.

Brilliant ! Thank you with all my heart. I encountered this discrepancy while learning to crochet this week ( without a real life teacher) and was micro-analysing the stitches between yarn over and yarn under. I now make sure to yarn over every single time. HOWEVER there ARE some decorative stitches that call for yarn under I discovered, but you will see that specifically in the directions. Again, thank you for an amazing detailed look at this issue.

You’re welcome. You are right - yarn under has it’s place and patterns will tell you when to use it.

With single crochet it changes how it looks, with yu it looks like an X and with yo like a V I prefer yu in sc but now I will try to yo with other stitches

Thank you so much for this tutorial! I am going to share it for sure. I was just watching a video last night, where the teacher was doing yarn unders, especially starting then ending with yarn overs. I was taught by aunt, who comes from a LONG LINE of crocheters, knitters and tatters. She taught me to hold the hook like a pencil (I see VERY VERY FEW do this, less wrist issues too like carpal tunnel), and to do yarn overs. I had no idea (I have been crocheting for at least 35 yrs) there was such thing as yarn under. Even when I make little stuffed animals, it was always yarn overs. Thank you again very much for this demo. I do think the yarn overs are more correct, and definitely easier for the beginners to learn. Blessings!

I do both in single crochet. The first pull through is yarn over the loop to finish the stitch is yarn under. It's just more comfortable for me to do it that way. On other stitches . Double etc. I do yarn overs. I have been crocheting for over 43 years. But your video is very good. Wish we has you tube when I started. LOL we didn't even have PCs. I learned single and double in school. The rest I had to learn on my own. Just learned Tunisian crochet. On you tube! Thanks it was fun watching you. Have a peaceful day.😊.

Wow! This is so helpful. Thanks! I had tried crocheting awhile ago and gave it up because I had issues with obtaining proper tension. I have picked it back up and thought I was doing pretty well. Not so much after watch this video. My mom has asked me what I have been doing since my crochet work looks different. Now I know, I have been doing yarn under since I have picked up crocheting again. I have just adjusted my tension to allow more ease with the yarn under thus getting "larger" and more normal stitches. It will be fun to try the projects with yarn over... well, after I finish the baby blanket I am working on.

I teach a knit/crochet class at a senior center and this tutorial will help them a lot. I think that if you do a yarn under (when you compare the 2 examples) the yarn under looks like a half double crochet rather than a double crochet; and that's why its shorter. I never noticed it before. Thank you so much

I've watched so many tutorials where I've seen crocheters yarn under. These people have been crocheting for more than five years and they still do it. Although when they're describing what they're doing they often say"pull up a loop" rather than "yarn over" and it's only the second yarn over. I often comment to see if it's deliberate and I had only one lady reply and she told me it didn't matter. It does though in my opinion, even yarning under that one time makes a difference. April Amos, I think you and I have seen some of the same tutorials. I remember asking that question of one youtuber, and was told it makes no difference, and I believe you were the one that quickly came back with the fact that it DOES make a difference in the stitches.

I love your ability to explain these subtleties. Exactly the kind of verbal description that helps me learn best. I prefer to understand both the how to AND the WHY. Well done!

I am glad l came across your video and know about the difference between the two. As a beginner, I only do yarn over. However I once saw someone in KZread doing what you call 'yarn under' mixing with some 'yarn over' without explanation and I was very confused. Thank you for your clarification. 👍😊

Thanks for this. I teach crochet and I run into this problem with students. Sometimes they actually argue with me about it. You give some good, detailed reasoning behind why it should be done the way man has probably been doing it for eons. That swatch pretty much told it all. I need to make one of those to keep in my teaching tools.

I’ve just completed my 3rd attempt at crochet, and I am getting better. It’s me!!! I’m the person that does all yarn unders!!! I didn’t even know I was doing it until I was trying to find the third loop on a hdc and it was on the front of my work and not the back!!! I was having a whole crisis about how my stitches could wind up being backwards and nothing I googled could help because a “backwards stitch” and “wrong side of crochet project” are both actual things lmao! I didn’t want to learn a crab stitch, I just wanted to know why I couldn’t continue the blanket I was making! 😂

I've been crocheting for almost 55 years. While I am a totally y/o person, I really enjoyed your demonstration. You know when you do something for so long you aren't really aware any longer why you do it or even that you do it, you just do it? Breaking down the individual motions made me aware again. I have always yarn under and gauge hitting has never been a problem for me! I think it just depends what you are use to. Ive YU for 30+ years so maybe its a bit late to change :)

I have been crocheting for many years now, and this is the first I've heard of the YU process. Of course, I learned from my grandmother and I still use the technique of YO she taught me. Interesting video though. You have a new subscriber.

I do both and i have never had a problem. I learned today i do a combination of both and i tried the yarn over and it looked super funky. I prefer the look of the combination and i have never had a problem with speed or tension.

i think once you've gotten used to it then it is worth it. I am starting to make toys and yarn under has been recommend as it will keep the stuffing in better x

Thanks this video is really helpfull ive managed to be doing yarn unders all the way. I personaly haven't had any problems with my stitches being to tight but I tend to do really loosely. Doesn't mean I'm not gonna try to fix it I like the way the yarn over stitches look more

Thanks so much, this is the mistake I have been making in crochet. In knitting a yarn over comes from the left of the needle, but I now see in crochet a yarn over comes from the right of the hook, not the left. This is why I gave up on crochet. You have basically told me what I’ve been doing wrong, and I’ve now corrected it. It makes all the difference!

YES! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS!!! I’m a serious knitter who decided it was time to add crocheting to my arsenal of crafty skills. I’ve been learning to crochet through KZread videos and see this a lot actually. It never seemed to be used consistently, and the knitter in me said, “There must be a rule! EVERYTHING effects the fabric!” I quickly learned 2 things, when trying to understand when, and why to use a YU vs. YO; 1. Most designers get offensive when I’ve asked them to help me understand 2. It absolutely matters! I just had to understand it, and did EXACTLY what you did in this video. I swatched up every stitch, flat and in the round. It was a lot of work! My only guess for the reasoning behind using YU’s for anything at all, is that it’s probably just they way the someone learned? I know when knitting, English vs. Continental effects the tension of my purl stitches drastically. And when crocheting, I prefer the loftier look and ease of performing a YO myself. If you’ve ever tried following a picture tutorial vs. a video tutorial, the pictures don’t typically show the specific direction and action of wrapping the yarn over the hook. Trust me, in my expansive quest for the answer to YU vs. YO, I’ve only ever seen it performed by watching a video. I feel like crocheting is the more laid back sister to knitting. She doesn’t follow as many rules as Knitting 😜

As a long-time knitter and crocheter, I've always been aware that YO's are done oppositely in the two crafts. And if you examine the loop on your needle or hook, you'll see that the right leg is in front when you knit and the left leg is in front when you crochet. This is true if you're talking about standard knitting/crocheting (as in book-learning). There are exceptions, of course, and many needleworkers do their own thing. If it makes you happy, go for it!

Thank you for showing the difference, at last!! I've always done YOs only and I find it incredible that there are KZreadrs with thousands of followers teaching crochet doing YUs! So their followers are learning it WRONG. And I mean: anyone can make mistakes, but don't they notice that their movements are different than those of most and ask themselves if they're doing something wrong at some point??

Read the instructions on how to make crochet stitches. Every stitch is made up of yarn overs. Yarn over and yarn under are different interactions between the yarn and hook that produce different results. If instructions say to YO and you do the opposite by making a YU, then you did make a mistake. If you choose to make a YU, which is totally your creative license to do, that’s fine. Just don’t call it a YO.

I've been crocheting for about 20 years and never knew I was not doing a yarn over. I prefer to make amigurumi, which makes my natural yarn under work well, but I discovered that in a DC I yarn under, then yarn over, then yarn under the rest of the stitch. My movements are consistent, so it has never affected the way my projects appear, I just typically use a larger hook to compensate for the gauge difference.

This may explain why I struggle so much with puff stitches. I have a terrible time pulling the last loop through cleanly. I never realized that I was yarning under after the first (correct) yarn over. Thank you!

When I first learnt I did YO for all but I was actually finding it way easier for my hook to swoop through the loops on my hook if I made the second a YU. I do it exactly as you do it at 6:25. I have tried to spot the difference in look but it definitely isn't enough to bother me. It makes me faster so when I'm doing blankets I do it but maybe if I want to do things 'properly' for a more important project I'll do YO.

Bingo! I taught myself to crochet from craft magazines years ago before You Tube existed. Yup! I've had it wrong all these years. I couldn't figure out why my crochet was always so tight. Nothing ever fit. Thank you!

I couldn't get the difference in how to do it over until you said put your hook underneath and over to the back then I could see the wool going over. I was lost in the under over, over under mixed system. Now I think I am sorted out

i didn't even realize i was doing yarn under oh m gosh thank you for doing such a detailed video!!!

This works wonders if u have splitty yarn only do it once yarn under but it helps twist the yarn back.

I’m new to crocheting and my first project is a blanket. I’m almost done with the blanket just to realize I’ve been doing yarn unders 🥲 When I first started a lady was doing “YOs” but they were YUs come to find out. Oh well no going back now 😂 will switch it up with future projects. Was wondering why my half double crochets weren’t looking like everyone else’s 😂

I did not know all these decades I have been yu n not yo, wow.. didn't know there was a difference. I tried yo n it came so natural to me, who would had known, I have been doing something else. Yo add more texture also, then yu. Once I finish this project I will incorporate the official yo. Good look out. Thnx Now that u brought it up, and I'm thinking about it, I have never seen a pattern with yu. Lol... our own interpretation. I still like yu, I just have more options and that is what being creative is all about, options. Wow, Thnx again.

You’re welcome. 😊 Great observation about the texture difference. The only time I’ve seen YU instructed to be used is in tapestry crochet. I think it’s useful in amigurumi too but usually a personal preference.

Thanks this is something new to me

I learned tunisian crochet first, and I only did yarn under. I'm trying to branch out beyond tunisian crochet and had problems with the end result as you mentioned in this video. The stitch just doesn't look right. So now I get to learn yarn over!

OMG, I hve been crocheting wrong for 50 years! Thank you for explaining the YO really means yarn OVER.

There are some stitches where YO & YU are used in combination but yes in normal stitches , you are correct.... very much easier if you do the YO ONLY.😘

I actually didn’t have this issue. Thankfully I learned correctly the first time. But I did come here to see if there would be any situation where a yarn under would be more beneficial. Because they just feel so hard to do! 😂

I figured out I was doing yarn unders when I tried doing crochet cabling for the first time! It did not look right

Omg I had no idea XD I’ve been doing yarn unders wow I’m stupid ima do yarn overs now for real mine were tight and I was so confused
