    I have been a yard jockey at xpo for a year and a half. Love it, 9-10hrs day Mon-Friday Top pay 34.60 hour weekend and holidays off paid and OT paid everyweek. Spotters have heat in the winter and air in the summer. No cons

    Cons of being a yard jockey in most cases: Having lazy coworkers Poor on-site mangers Potential crappy equipment (no heat or a/c) Understaffed Working outside, rain, sleet or snow and of course the hot ass summer days.

    The other good thing is, you don't have to drive on the highway or side streets in the truck when it is snowing, or high winds. You are in the yard and about 90% of the yards are well taken care of in the winter

  • @turbopokey

    Mmm, pretty sure if the yard truck stays off the street and always on private property, a cdl isn’t necessary. Our company has repair shop guys and a few other people certified on the yard truck moving trailers around as needed and pretty sure they don’t have cdl’s. A place that has multiple buildings in the close area that regularly move trailers between buildings, those drivers would need cdl since it’s on the public street.

  • @troyboy7610

    @troyboy7610

    Places like the post office will require a CDL because they often drive on the streets to other facilities to bring or pick up trailers. But I believe it depends on the distance. If you drive your unit on the road you are allowed to do so without a CDL as long as you stay within the required distance, and I don't remember how many mIles it is. Same applies for driving a truck for a farm.

    Look for yard spotter/mule/jockey/switcher/hostler positions online that don’t ask for a CDL, but just a regular driver’s license. And apply, they’ll train you. Or work for a big shipper and start from inside the warehouse and ask to be trained to be one of them in-house and they’ll teach ya. You don’t get to leave the yard, so no need for a CDL, just a lot of companies want them, but you just have to look for the ones that don’t require any…do a lot of research.
