To our friends who are not native Greek speakers and who are left confused despite seeing the amazing translations posted in the comments section: this song is indeed difficult to understand, as it is a part of “Axion Esti” (“Worthy It Is”), a quite long poem by the Greek poet and Nobel Prize winner Odysseas Elytis. This poem is about the spiritual journey of a male hero, who, trying to reach an ideal that will complete him and make him whole, faces obstacles set by enemies. The difficulty in understanding the text lies in that, what the hero seeks has various forms throughout the poem (some of them being: freedom, hope, a woman, Greece, religion), and the enemies that stand on his way also come in many forms: The Italian/German troops invading Greece during the Second World War, Greek politicians, human corruption, his own family, the darkness inside him). The hero then has an epiphany, that his real enemy is his binary, child-like “black or white” way of thinking (splitting people into good/evil, friends/enemies, etc.). With this newfound knowledge, he becomes a different person. He also sees erotic love as a means to overcome his old way of thinking (because, in his mind, the male/female union has the power to destroy binarism). This is just a small analysis for us to understand (or still not understand :D) the lines “they bombarded me” and “Mother far away, my everlasting Rose”.

Ίσως από τα ομορφότερα ποιήματα του Ελύτη, αυτό, σίγουρα από τα ομορφότερα της ελληνικής ποίησης, ίσως από τις πιο επικές συνθέσεις του Θεοδωράκη αυτή, πέρα από κάθε αμφιβολία όμως αυτή εδώ είναι η πιο μαγευτική εμφάνιση του Γιάννη Κότσιρα. Ας συλλογιστουμε λοιπόν μέσα από το βάρος αυτής της συνύπαρξης τη σπουδαιότητα των δημιουργών και των συντελεστών και το βαθύ νόημα της ποιητικής έκφρασης του Οδυσσέα Ελύτη ο οποίος εξυμνεί εδώ την Αγάπη και ας πιστέψουμε επιτέλους σ'αυτην. This song was originally a poem by Odysseas Elytis , who later won the Nobel Prize in Literature. It was set to music by Theodorakis in the 1960s. Elytis was very religious and this poem/song is filled with Orthodox Christian meaning and themes. To me it brings back sad memories because it was sung in Cyprus after the Turkish invasion by the refugees who had to abandon their homes.

Όταν είσαι Έλληνας ! (Κύπριος !) δεν μπορεί να μην πάλλεται και η ψυχή σου και η καρδιά σου, όταν ακούεις τέτοια μουσική και τέτοια λόγια ! Να μας ζήσει η Ελλάδα μας, και η δικιά μου Μάνα Ελλάδα (έτσι τη λένε την Μητέρα μου! - η οποία, όταν την ρωτάνε πώς πάει, εκείνη απαντά : " Η ΕΛΛΑΔΑ ΠΟΤΕ ΔΕΝ ΠΑΘΑΙΝΕΙ !!! " τώρα είναι στα 87!)

This music is wonderful, stirring, joyous, affirmative, enthralling, with a touch of animating melancholy that adds power. While the lyrics presently remain beyond me and the translation does not seem to capture the spirit of the music, I find that I am drawn to it and want to understand it. Explanation below is therefore intriguing. Rendition by Yannis Kotsiras... how could it be better? He is inspired!

This is part of the 'Axion Esti' a long poem by Nobelist O. Elytis in which the speaker explores the essence of his being. Axion Esti means the priceless quality inherent in all things. The poem was turned into music by Theodorakis, who managed to popularise high poetry during a period when Greeks were trying to overcome the trauma from a civil war and a dictatorship. The whole Axion Esti collection is deeply significant and emblematic for Greeks of all generations.

Proud to be Greek and of choosing to live in Greece, despite its troubles and dysfunctional system.
