I got the news late the the night of August 2nd. I was 14, my family and I were camping in Northern Ontario, Canada. Couldn't get radio during the day, but at night I could tune in 760 AM, WJR out of Detroit (where I lived). I asked Pop if I could have the keys to the motor home, to catch the ball scores and see how the Yankees did (not knowing they didn't play). Heard the scores and was just about to turn the radio off when the announcer gave the news. I was in shock. I turned off the radio and told Pop that Thurman died in a plane crash. I then walked over to the campfire, with no one else around, and sat down. Pop came over a few minutes later and asked if I was okay. I jump up and hugged him, beginning to cry something fierce. I asked Pop why it happened. He tired to console me, but it all went in one ear and out the other. My vacation was shot. A couple of days later Pop suggested we go home, since "the fishing wasn't so great this year." I didn't care, for I was still mourning. The day after we got home Pop suggested we go visit my Uncle Andy in Ohio. I liked the idea. So we headed about for Akron. The first full day we were there Andy took us sightseeing. Went to the Football Hall of Fame and stuff. Next thing I know I see a sign that read, "Canton-Akron Airport". I was once again in shock. Next thing I know we are on that road next to the runway, where his plane crashed. There was a flower cross and some wreaths. I put my hand on the window and began to cry. I wanted to get out of the car, but I didn't ask and Andy drove us away. It was years later that I realized that Pop planned the trip to Akron while in Canada. He did it so I could pay homage to my baseball hero. Unfortunately for me, Pop had passed away before hand. I only ever cried utterly twice in my life. The day Thurman died and at Pop's funeral. I hope I never forget either of them. 💔❤

That was the era I watched baseball: WPIX channel 11 Yankees!!! The catcher, Thurman!!! I remember the shock of learning one day he was playing at home plate and the next day he....was....gone. Shocking.

I started to see him play in 1973, calling him Thurm the Sperm, and cried when he died and still do! I was a catcher in Lawrence! He belongs in the Hall of Fame, posthumously, because to me whether he stayed a Yankee or not he would of earned election later in life, hypothetically! Kudo's to the Boomer for sponsoring a call for his appointment by the veterans committee! He was a young man who would of done great things, he wasn't limited to catcher as he played both outfield and first base!

What bummed me out is that he survived the crash, but was unable to moved around, causing him to inhale toxic fumes that cost him his life. :( Rest easy eternally, Munson. - NOTE: I'm not a Yankees fan -- far from it, but as a baseball fan, I appreciated his toughness and tenacity as a catcher for the Yankees until his untimely death.

It’s interesting that Al Downing had so many good things to say about him, because they maybe spent 2 months together in August and September of 1969. Downing was traded after the 69 season. Downing must have been mighty impressed by him.

Feeling sadness and empathy for all those who felt this on a personal level. However, I must say that as someone who was born just a touch too late, I am jealous of fans who got to experience these special players as "one of their guys." Now they are all mercenaries for hire.

THE reason why the Yankees didn’t Three peat in 79. That man was irreplaceable. Upon news of Thurman’s death, the wind was punctured from the Yankees sails. I LOVED that guy. And I was a Dodger fan at the time.😊

I guess Thurman didn't want to move the family to NY being that u are home for 6 months in the off season & never know when ull be traded. Just feel sad he died & such a big reason was to fly to Ohio as that was their home. It's too heartbreaking that he died for such a great reason to be home w/ his kids & wife.
