He was a great catcher but he didn’t play every day until around 1961, he was platooned from 1954 - 1960 and that probably cost him the great years he needed to make the Hall. But from 61-64, he was a great full time player.

He was named St Louis Man Of The Year and yet Elston doesn't have a ⭐ in the St Louis Walk of Fame. Elston was the 2nd best catcher to come out of St Louis.

Elston was one of the best Yankee catchers ever. Also, really cool to see my grandfather interviewing Mantle and Maris at 24:14.

In 1973 in Lawrence Township, NJ Elston Howard cam e to speak at the Babe Ruth-Little League banquet. I asked him two questions, " Who was the better catcher Thurman Munson or Carlton Fisk!? " His reply, " Well I know they donot like each other! " I got a Yankee Yearbook autographed that I don't have anymore, but I asked him another question, " What happened to Matty Alou?" and all he said was " He was traded to St Louis! "

I read that Steinbrenner wanted to release Matty Alou in September. Ralph Houk knew that that meant Matty would have to take a pay cut, so he told George to just trade him somewhere else.

Elston reputedly never broke a finger as a catcher. Also, he knew instantly whether or not a foul pop would reach the stands instantly, and only ran down the ones that wouldn't.

It’s hard to believe that in the extensive archives of the Yankees, WPIX-TV and elsewhere, there’s not a single recorded interview and/or sound bite with Elston Howard.

"Unfortunately Stengel was a platoon-type manager." Unfortunately Stengel won five straight World Series in his first five tries.
