I was spending the summer with my Grandfather in Lafayette, Louisiana and one evening I went with him to the Knight of The Columbus to watch him play Bourre (a French card game). The phone rang and a gentleman answered the phone and motioned an older gentleman to the phone, he spoke for a few minutes and then came back to the table. The older gentleman was Mr. Guidry (can't remember his first name), the phone call was Ron from the Yankees' locker room calling his Grandfather to inform him that they were just told about Thurman Munson's death.

That's a memory that will stick with you! I remember as a child my parents always playing Bourre. They were a big fans of Ron Guidry and I was told that we are related to the Guidrys. They grew up in Eunice and moved to the MS coast after Camille listening to him talk, his accent reminds me of every time I visited Eunice as a kid. Sounds like all my uncles!

I enjoy watching the game on you tube where Ron strikes out 18 California Angels during the 78 season. That slider was just wicked. I saw him pitch a game at Yankee Stadium in 79. He was being used in the bullpen as a closer that year when Goose got injured. Ron relieved, I believe Tommy John, and I was watching Ron come in relief and he just mowed the opposing team down, one after the other. You could see from where I was sitting how fast he was throwing after watching 8 innings of Tommy John’s sinkers. Ronny was just incredible. I really enjoyed watching him pitch. He was a true Yankee!

He did this against an all right-handed hitting lineup.

I was there! It was my 10th Birthday, and with a group from the First Baptist Church of Sheepshead Bay. We were in the left field bleachers. There was only one pair of binoculars to go around, for 50 people. Epic night.....!

@@donreed Much of the Baptist churches are in Bed Stuy and Crown Heights, mostly African American neighborhoods. However, there is a Black community that has been on E 15th Street in Sheepshead Bay since the turn of the 20th Century. Many of the first black residents worked the old Sheepshead Racetrack stables (yes, there was a racetrack in Sheepshead, during the turn of the century). And when they founded First Baptist of Sheepshead, on E 15, they got their charter from Bed Stuy's Concord Baptist.

@@thescatman5029 Great story! Yes, aware of the old Sheepshead Racetrack (I've got a pretty decent library of racing books, which, considering how badly written 95% of all racing books are, is amazing in itself). Happy New Year, my friend. We definitely could use one.

I can still remember watching this game with my Dad when I was 7 years old and jumping up and down with every strikeout! Also, is it me or did Ron's wife look like Leah Remini!

I heard that for this game, Guidry/Munson's pitching strategy was, first time through the order, fastball sets up slider. Second time through the order, reverse it. Simple.

20:43 . . . .''in just over two hours''....we'd be in the top of the 6th or so in today's game, with a reliever about to come in from the bullpen, and both the starter and the reliever(s) that follow will be paid more for every inning pitched than Ron Guidry made for that entire 1978 season.

Mike Fallopian That’s why baseball today is taking a hit. People can see through that.
