In 1995 I went to see Andy Pettitte’s debut game, from 1987-now I’ve been going to Yankee games, I don’t remember the 1986 Yankee games but I do remember in 1987 we were doing good but we didn’t have Rich “Goose” Gossage so there was no number 54 for the 6 years he was gonr for, in 1989 we all worn number 54 to welcome back Gossage and then when the 1995 Spring Training games were on in Tampa we booked a flight to Tampa Florida and headed to Steinbrenner Field, we saw someone wearing number 46 replacing another player who already worn number 46 in 1978, then once he made his debut in April of 1995 he struck out multiple players especially in October of ‘95, in 1996 on my 10th birthday my family and I headed into Woodlawn and took the 4 train consisting of R33 Redbird cars from Woodlawn to 161st Street-Yankee Stadium, in August of 2000 we were down in Midtown Manhattan for my maternal grandfather’s late birthday as he turned 62 that year and then all of us including my maternal grandmother surprisingly took a borrowed 2 train as the pinstripe 4 train from Grand Central-42nd Street to 161st Street-Yankee Stadium once we got off at Yankee Stadium we walked to the stadium to see the Subway Series game after that we took the 4 train up to Bedford Park Boulevard and walked to the Botanical Garden station we took Metro North from Botanical Garden to Bronxville my maternal grandparents got off at Woodlawn and were picked up by my mom’s younger sister and then they were driven home, once we got home we were getting ready to make another appearance at Yankee Stadium we headed to Yankee Stadium by taking a train from Bronxville to Woodlawn then took the 2 train from 233rd Street to 149th Street-Grand Concourse and then walked upstairs at 149th Street-Grand Concourse and took the 4 train from 149th Street-Grand Concourse to 161st Street-Yankee Stadium. On September 11th 2001 as a new intern in the FDNY I was off from my firehouse in Lower Manhattan, I was at school when the first aircraft slammed into the north tower of the world trade center, I responded down there with 26 other of my fellow intern colleagues and schoolmates after the attack I returned to school feeling good that I went to seek medical attention for smoke inhalation ash inhalation dust inhalation and debris inhalation as well as deep alacorations to my face that required stitches, I went back to school 3 weeks later and got the most relieveable reunion from my teacher and classmates, spent 8 months at ground zero, but made at least 3 games in late 2001, I was able to the see the Halloween night game where Derek Jeter was named Mister November on the night of October 31st 2001, in May of 2002, I returned to school for the last day, after that I went to the 2002 Yankees season, in 2003 we went to one of the games and saw catcher Brian Huckobe slam into Derek Jeter’s shoulder and accidentally dislocated it, after that awful game in 2003 we couldn’t believe what we saw. In 2004 I left the FDNY, and on my internship retirement day in ‘04 we went to The Bronx to see a Yankee game to celebrate my internship retirement. In 2005 we saw a new Yankee who was kind of honoring Jackie Robinson but worn number 22, in 2007 Robinson Cano switched from number 22 to number 24 to fully honor Jackie Robinson by wearing number 24 since it’s a backwards number for number 42, then on September 19th 2008 we set out to see a Tigers away game and we saw a fight happen in Cleveland, then after that game more than 48 hours later we set out to Yankee Stadium on September 21st 2008 to see the final Yankee game at the old Yankee Stadium, Andy Pettitte and Mariano Rivera did absolutely fantastic, Derek Jeter gave his final speech at the old Yankee Stadium at the end of the final game there, then in 2009 we went to the first official opening day at the new Yankee Stadium, each year we watched as the old Yankee Stadium was being ripped apart and taken down, in 2013 we went to Andy Pettitte’s final ever game and then a year later we went to his number retirement and monument ceremony where he gave his speech and then a year later we saw the retirement of Derek Jeter, after that in 2016 we saw his number get put into Monument Park and his monument plaque as well, we also saw the retirement of Alex Rodriguez later on in 2016 and then the debut of Aaron Judge, in 2017 we set out to Detroit to see the Yankees take on the Tigers after a drilling by Tommy Kahnle to Mikey Mahtook striking him in the helmet, that game had everyone on both teams in the stands and on the field have the last laugh but we all never won the big huge last laught battle, then a very good moment of Tyler Austin fight Joe Kelly at Fenway Park back in 2018, then in 2019 we saw multiple ejections in The Bronx including Brett Gardner, then we were shutdown in 2020, in 2021 I went to at least 15 games including one where Anthony Rizzo hit a walk off grand slam in the bottom of the 9th inning and won the game, in 2022 I went to a total of 46 games including Aaron Judge’s 62 home runs and Josh Donaldson’s walk off grand slam in the bottom of the 13th inning on the early morning of August 18th of that year, and then this season I went to a total of 40 games excluding the spring training, Anthony Volpe did absolutely fantastic. Best 35 in person seasons of my life and will return

Pettitte was good. He almost won the Cy Young Award in 1996. If not for the 1994 strike, Pettitte would have made his debut.

So does Mussina. I hope 1/22 brings a different result from what we have seen for the last 6 years.

When you look at 90’s and earlier how does the MLB not give these pitchers a little bit of an extra nod. Guys who pitched 220 innings per year and survived the dreaded high pitch count. I am not blaming the new pitchers I see guys who want to go deep but the game is different now. That is why I didn’t have as much of a problem with Jack Morris making it, I think it was a bit of a special case he had the high ERA but was a postseason regular with the signature moment. Is 250 innings of 3.50 ERA better than 200 of 3.00? I feel Pettitte deserves the nod as well, he was a workhorse who got it done on a great team, pitching in the AL East in his era makes his ERA solid even though it is higher than ideal.

teddyjun1 Mussina got in and deserved it. It always bugged me all those Yankee teams he didn’t win a World Series.

Andy Pettitte is my favorite Yankees pitcher of all time but IMHO he falls just short of the HOF. He has a great winning percentage and is the all-time postseason wins leader, but his lifetime ERA is pretty high for someone to consider for the HOF. Also, he never won a Cy Young award, or any individual season awards (outside of an ALCS MVP in 2001), he made a few All-Star teams but he wasn’t a consistent, perenial All-Star. He was inconsistent at times throughout his career, had some down seasons (almost got himself traded in 99) but later in his career when he started throwing all his pitches and not just spamming cutters he became an even better pitcher. But I think he just comes up short of HOF status.

overrated. Pitched for awesome teams. With almost 4 era. And avg run support per game 5.5. Imagine Clemens with 5.5 run support per game. He would never lose.
