    Hey Midland, it has been a HUGE help to see your videos during my own restoration of my '89 XV1100. I can't tell you how many times I've already came back to check how you did a step to make sure I'm doing it right. The carb re-builds were also a BIG BIG help and very thorough. For my question on this video. @ ~ 8:26 the flywheel looks like it is at TDC for the front cylinder, BUT, the cam shows that is it out of timing, they you turn the flywheel from TDC to TDC again then the cam is aligned. Are there two different times when the flywheel is at TDC and the cam shows two different points of timing? I'm asking because on my bike, at TDC for the rear cylinder, my cam sprocket points down & away, do I just need to keep turning to align it with the next instance? Thanks !

    Hi sorry for the late reply. I see the problem in the video and I think it is an editing mistake. What is important is that at the end it aligns as I explain it. The single line on the flywheel and the hole on the top. If yours isn't like that than something could be set wrong. I also realize that you are probably solved the problem you had already.

    great Vid my 1100 Virago runs like a 250cc bike when l check the front cam settings the dot is 1 or even 2 teeth before the aliment mark... have you heard of this.?? l belive it was done to de tune the bike for learner riders here in Australia ..?? some feed back would be great cheers

    Hello...well I have never heard that anyone misaligned the camshaft to make the bike weaker for learners...usually this is done by restricting the inlet diameter after the carb. If it is that much out you are lucky the piston didn't hit the valves...I would stop using it immediately and re set everything to factory positions, then do a compression test to see if the misaligned camshaft caused any valve seat damage/carbonisation. If not good then the heads need to come off and the valves need re-lapping. Check fuel level in the carbs, check the tps sensor position (if you have one) If all good including both cylinder compression are even and above 160psi (sea level, warm engine, cold engine will have less ~152psi-ish) , then it should run like an 1100. As a side note if this has been done deliberately then who knows what else has been touched (carbs are the right ones? Jets, needles etc..??) Also worth checking the cam chain tensioner to make sure the chain isn't loose, on the 1100 the tensioners are automatically adjust themselves but they are mechanical, not hydraulic like more modern engines... I hope this helps, good luck 😉👍🛠🔧

    @@MidlandCruiser Impossible, somebody just made a mistake that can kill your engine, depending on where the valves are when the pistons are up. They have to be on the marks, if you want to make the bike slower, there are other ways.

    Cheers Lorant! Is there any tip for removing the rear cylinder bushing? Mine is stuck in place and won't come out without some strong persuasion. Do you recommend a slidind hammer through the camshaft bolt to drive both out?

  • @MidlandCruiser

    @MidlandCruiser

    Hello. Please make sure the cranckshaft is on top dead center, flywheel mark "T" and the little dot at 12 o'clock ish (lining up with the mark on the head) Once the camshaft slides out a little it can get stuck a little, but it always should come out by hand, what I do normally is put the camshaft bolt back in a few turn and pull it out with that. If your valve clearance are a little tight it might still push on the camshaft a little and that's why maybe tight. Make sure your rockers are free and you have proper valve clearance. Basically no you shouldn't need a sliding hammer, it should come out freely... Hope this helps

    WOW!! Been looking everywhere on Virago work as I dont know much about engines, thank you so much! Can you please tell me what could be effecting my virago? Symptoms are: • White smoke that smells like oil coming out the exhaust which leads to the front of the bike • Oil needs continuous top up • It sounds like one cylinder is running instead of two • Spark plug on that cylinder is quite black after just a little drive Technician told me something about valve stem travel is not going all the way and the bike is running really rich causing this issues and he cannot find the right o-ring for the valve stem as its a weird size??? I am desperate for some proper help on the matter if you could?

  • @MidlandCruiser

    @MidlandCruiser

    Жыл бұрын

    Hello. High oil consumption can be caused by bad valve stem seals and also piston rings. If it's realy bad on start up but then goes away mostly then stem seal are probable. Considering you have only 1 cylinder running it still can bad rings, and that's why it's not running, but can also be carbs because you mentioned black plugs. It is really hard for me to help because obviously I didn't see the bike. It needs proper diagnostic by a proper mechanic who knows what he/she is doing, seems like you might have a few things wrong, and not easy ones.. Also you won't find O-ring for the valve stem because that is a special seal and usually comes in a cylinder head gasket kit... Hope this helps a little but I still recommend to take it to a good mechanic who knows these bikes.. good luck

    @@MidlandCruiser wow such a great reply, thank you!
