Thanks bro! I'm loving the vmax to! It's growing on me every day!
hi Mackie, that spring could be just a guide for an overflow pipe of some description.......keep up the good work jon
@MackieBass
6 жыл бұрын
That's exactly what it is Jon, thanks. I did look it up since...but the pipe is not there - I guess not the end of the world.
Remove pipe-bolt, replace o-ring(included with filter, install.

Yep… just popped the new filter box open and no o-ring for the pipe-bolt. It’s always something
The spring hanging is a drain tube guide. The screw in the drain plug (I think) is on overfill drain/secondary drain?
Great Video! Thanks for Sharing

Thanks for your videos, a great help. Later Vmax 1200 have a standard cannister oil filter, mine's a 2006 for example.

You can get oil filter adapter plate, for early Vmax, comes with bolt to use spin on oil filter, but you have to get also cross frame brace bar from 97 model up for to fit, makes filter change more easy, I changed on my 88 model

Sounds good.
Haha. I have an Allen key missing as well. Just when I want to adjust the angle of the oil pressure gauge dial on my Vmax
Hey buddy, the spring coil holds your airbox drain hose from touching the exhaust.. they usually get lost over the years as they fall off the airbox end...
@MackieBass
6 жыл бұрын
It holds a drain hose of some sort but it's not the one of the airbox, as the one from the airbox goes to the carnister on the side of the bike. It's obviously not the most important stuff as the bike runs without it :) - good enough for me.

Possibly the engine breather?

MackieBass not sure if you ever got a definitive answer, but it is a spring guide for the long fuel tank breather hose at the back right hand side of the filler.

Mine runs on the left hand side because I have the extended range 20ltr fuel tank 💡
On mine the spring holds some sort of drain pipe. from the air-box i think when I traced it...
Great video

Practice what you preach regards the springy thing , read the fecking manual, agree with most comments looks like it's for holding an overflow of some sort, good video, gearing up for Cambridge this weekend, then realised its next week, holiday inn wanted £100 for the Saturday night, so will be going home the same day.

Hold your horses buddy...can you take a tent? The landlord said he has no problem setting up a camp on the pub's propety. I will update everybody on my next vid!
The spring is for POGO mode. There is a little switch behind the fuel cap release, next to the left rear shock which, if switched will activate the famous "V-pogo stick" (just make sure you don't operate it inside a tunnel when jumping cars)
It is always satisfying working on your own bike and saving money. If you always let someone else do it you never learn. When I was young I never had the money to pay someone to work on my vehicles and now that I can afford it I still do most of my own maintenance, the ones my aging body allow anyway.
@MackieBass
6 жыл бұрын
That is exactly it James. Yes, it saves money but the satisfaction you get from it is truly priceless...and you know it's done properly! (most of the time anyway)
Phillips head screw - does it hold a magnet in the sump plug? The spring thingy probably holds the vent tubes and overflows..

MackieBass That oil filter on Max looks like an oversize cartridge filter on a dirtbike. Is the tank big enough for touring? For some reason I thought vmax had a relatively small tank for the weight and engine size.... I'm sure you will have fun.
@MackieBass

Hahah, no. 100 miles is the absolute max you can get from a full tank of petrol. But owning a KTM 990 I am kind of used to frequent fuel stops :)

Yeah the manual !! On the xjr there was no washer at all i had to find a replacement...people dont check and dont realise the washer is stuck to the filter and bin it...then i come along with my haynes book and swear a lot cos bits are missing ...the little spring inside the filter bolt is a pressure relief valve...if you push it in a quarter inch and it springs back the valves ok !! The big sping under neath ? Must say ive never seen that before ...👍😏☮❤ Just looked at a load of parts diagrams for yours and cant see that big hangy downy springy thingy at all?????

Hi Mackie - really nice and educational video. But tell me - what is the right engine oil to use? I was told that you need a 20W40 - but you use 10W40? Any comment on that?
@MackieBass
5 жыл бұрын
Well it all depends on your riding conditions I think. If the ambient temperature is higher you can get away with thicker oil , and teh other way around. Hence I always aim to do my oil change after winter, fresh oil is slightly thicker but it gets around your engine faster in warmer temperatures, so it's all very indiviual too. I'd like to think that riding style (agressive or gentle) is also a big factor when chosing your oil. Hope that helps.
same sump plug on my Divi900 and my 1985 FZ750. NO idea why theres a posi screw in them.. And your spring thingy I think is for the overflow pipes to go thru

Mackie great to see the bike coming along. Haha I’ve got a huge set of Allen keys with 1 missing. How it got lost in my tiny garage is one of life’s mysteries and as I’m a bit OCD it drives me fucking crazy. Take car dude👍🍺👍🎸

Yes, another step closer, and yes...I've got one missing too. Brilliant!
The spring on the bottom was to hold drain hoses
That spring Mackie... Looks like it should hold a hose in place.... An overflow for something maybe?
Anyone know the proper oil covet bolt torque needed? Can't seem to find this for 95 vmax 1200. The bolt to take off was stupid tight. Tnx

Amen brother. I did lear the lesson the hard way many many time before. Leave the shit alone - best way :)
Mine doesn't have that phillips head on the sump plug. It stands too proud of what would be the normal bolt. Looks like someone's messed on with it at some point - the head of the bolt does look a bit rounded, so maybe it could have been a "just in case"? Can't see from the video - is the head welded straight onto or threaded into the bolt? That said, my vmax also doesn't have that style of filter either - mine is just a twist-on K&N. None of that bulky housing. Anyway, great videos and fantastic bike - consider me subscribed!

Thanks Karl, good to have you onboard! Few people mention that same plug before, I think this bolt holed the magnet, but I struggle to think how? Anyway, it's a MK1 V Max, later models were slightly different. Still, liking this bad boy!
Hi Mackie I'm guessing that spring is a stop for the centre stand
@MackieBass

Hey man, trust you are well? It's not, I have looked it up since - and it used to hold one of the drian hoses I think. But I'm not sure which one :)
Does anyone knows if I can use a cartridge filter like the late 90´s model instead of the paper filter ??

@@MackieBass Hi mate. I researched a bit deeper and got to that yes, it is possible to use the cartridge filter BUT only with an adapter that usually is a aluminum pieces and in addition, you neet to hace a special crossbar (in a V angle) that leaves a bit more space for cartridge. Check them here: www.ebay.com/itm/Oil-Filter-Adaptor-Plate-Cross-Bar-85-95-Yamaha-VMAX/261495448083?epid=1832286414&hash=item3ce257e213:g:0BUAAOxymiVQ~6f6 I like ur videos mate. I´m also an eager fan of motorcycles since little and got myself a Vmax recently. Plus I´m a cheap rat that like lo learn and save money on maintenance. I´m not a mechanic or similar, but this is my hobbie and I like to learn. Thanks for the videos Hey, where are u from? Not USA right? u have a bit or a nordic accent, is it?
that spring looks like a guide to route a drain hose down so it doesnt flop all over, just a guess though. Keep up the good vids Brother.

Manual says: yes.
So as others stated that spring is just a holder for overflow tubes for the carbs/battery. I do hate when you just loose stuff like that. Also do you have an address I can send some stuff to? Nothing major just something I think you would maybe enjoy. If you do shoot me a PM that would be great ride safe and rock on man!
