The original T7 it is. Less weight, less electronics, less complications, easier to repair. Tank range? show me the rider that can't reach a gas station when travelling unless you do real world travels in extreme remote locations. Suspension, same as the fuel tank issue. 90% of people that buy this bike will never reach the limit of the stock suspension. If you want a KTM get one, but please don't compare apples and oranges . I came from a 1250 GS loaded with electronics and there is a reason why I go back to simplicity. The stock T7 will get you anywhere you want to go as is, unless you wanna do rock climbing then change the suspension. Safe riding/travels to all , Cheers.

Without 400 k + range you wouldn’t be going very far in Australia. If your predominantly riding roads in Europe then yeah the Standard T7 would do but the suspension is easily used up in the bush with any half decent rider riding this bike like it is supposed to be ridden. This is for dirt bikers not tourists. It is for those who need the performance and range not to mention peace of mind reliability. Why spend an extra 4K on a standard T7 when you can get a better factory bike to begin with, for a little more, carries the fuel lower and has the extra travel and clearance. Add the better seat, foot pegs, dash and it’s a no brainer. My only gripe is the extra $$$ Yamaha Australia charges us over the US and Europe. Only bike better would be the World Rally that we miss out on.

Best review of the T7 WR to date! I've had my standard T7 for almost 2 years now - fitted Motoz tyres, Barkbusters, engine guard, low crash bars, tail tidy, rack and new can... yes I'd like more fuel range and plan to update the suspension although I've never bottomed out the bike - World Raid version looks great for dirt road touring but I'll be keeping my T7 Big Dirt Bike :-)

  • @bobbychills37

Good review in terms of comparing the two bikes I think I’ll go with the standard T7, in the EU it’s about 2500€ cheaper and the fact that you still have to(in my opinion)upgrade important things like crashbars, barkbusters, bigger engine guard that also covers the rear shock mount, high exhaust that’s less keen to damage the frame when you drop and maybe stiffer fork springs, I don’t see any reasonable benefit with upgrading to the world raid. Only if you plan to keep it stock, then I would definitely go for the world raid. But I would rather spend 3,5K get all the aftermarket protection, get the Öhlins and even throw in an Acerbis Rally Tank Plus it’s more fun upgrading the bike yourself, in my opinion at least..

  • @gradocchio

    @gradocchio

My thoughts exactly, I have priced out a T7 with all the protection upgrades, thicker rally seat, rear aluminum luggage box, etc. and have just reached the base price of a World Raid. I highly doubt I will ever need that .8" of extra shock travel and need to stop and stretch every 200 miles or so anyway, so gas stops are not an issue... just wish they offered Cruise Control but a simple throttle friction add-on or (~€850) a McCruise unit will work fine..

I own the WR and couldnt be happier. Ive been riding for 20+ years, had 40+ bikes, riden probably about a thousand bikes throughout the years, was a professional test driver and development engineer for the motorcycle world, and yet i will say: the t7wr might just be the best bike ive ever riden. Def the best bike ive ever owned. And the range is insane. Yamaha claims a fuel consumption of about 4.2L/100, but i always average my bike at about 3.6l/100. Ive done some serious 600km sprints on my WR without having to fill it up, its crazy ecenomical. If you get the chance to grab one, dont hesitate, you wont be dissapointed

Like your review thanks, debating a purchase however like you I was fortunate to go to Wales and do the Yamaha experience three weeks ago and rode the standard and World Raid back to back. I thought the suspension difference was amazing and didn't notice the difference in size and was chasing some smaller enduro bikes on the world raid with a massive grin on my face. A standard with the upgraded suspension may well be the perfect solution for purely off road but the cost would then be comparable and you loose the other benefits for on road!! Oh and definitely recommend the Tenere experience in Wales, a great two days.

The T7 was, when launched, a fantastic enduro-ADV bike. Very capable. A real contender. The suspension geometry was/is clever and well thought out. And it has the CP2 engine. Also,it is a Yamaha, with all the quality associated with the brand. A lot was done right. However… It seems they stoped short, in the process. It baffles me that, with the new T7 WR, Yamaha couldn’t add: 1. Cruise control 2. Tubelessssssss bloody tires 3. Heated grips It is basically just a more expensive, heavier bike, with a suspension upgrade and some more fuel capacity. For a significant price mark up 🤨 All the upgrades in suspension I’ve done already anyway, as we all have to do. Suspension is a thing that has to be suited specifically to the rider. What does the new T7 WR _really_ offer at this price point other than fuel capacity? My opinion is that this is a really poor attempt. And so below my expectations of Yamaha, who actually created the first T7.

I respectfully disagree with your comment. I understand you want all the frills, heated grips ,etc they're great and all but I think they're going after a different rider than you. Trying to offer the bare minimum in accessories that just take a beating and eventually fail and cost money to fix. The changes they did make are for performance on dirt basically. I think this WR is the knariest, most cost effective, lowest cost of ownership, extremely dependable adventure bike that's definitely slanted towards the off-road side of adventure bikes on the market. Yes it would be nice to have all the frills but it all adds to weight and price and less reliability. There are bikes with all those options and their great also but most of them are more slanted to the street riding side of adventure riding. If I would be far off road somewhere it would piss me off to breakdown due to computer glitch in my ride mode selector switch or my heated grips wiring melting some component, leaving me stranded somewhere inaccessible. This bike is very capable but definitely meant more for the true dirt adventurer IMHO. You might like the Aprilia , which is a great bike also with the frills you like, and great dirt capabilities.

I test rode a World Raid on the road and was at the limit on getting a foot to the ground at junctions (only little legs). I'm picking up the standard T7 tomorrow, much more comfortable seat height, and just looks slimmer and more manageable (15 odd Kilos is alot) Would only be doing very light off road work, so I'm sure the suspension will be adequate. For under £10k this bike is great value, at £11.5k hmmm not so much.

Great review with everything we need to know 🙂 I test rode one last week and can agree with you about it being a fun bike. I'm no expert whatsoever but I started looking for an adventure bike late summer last year and initially ruled out the T7 as I had heard it was more off road focused, clutch needs a mod etc, etc. So far I have test ridden the 800 DE, 800 RE more out of curiosity, Tuareg 660 (loved that bike), Honda Transalp and the BMW F850 GS Adventure, all great bikes but just didn't do it for me. Pulls like a train but vibes at 70, Meh, Great if I don't mind waiting months for spares, OK..., heavy. I'm 185cm and was surprised at how high it felt, balls of my feet on the ground - I would need to put on weight to compress the springs more? 🤔. The bike just seemed to have a bit of playfulness to it that some of the other bikes were lacking, I really couldn't fault it and as I want it to also travel longer distances, it just seems a logical bike for me. A serious contender.

Plus, the T7 vs the 660 Tuareg .. LED lighting, better suspension, better seat, tubeless tires, better windscreen, TFT color screen, Modes and engine braking and ABS changes, sounds to me like the Tuareg is a Bargain for $1500-$2000 difference + you can find them in dealerships.!!

Good improvements, otherwise, apart from one glaring error. It still runs on tubed tyres. Plus, the screen is still non-adjustable. The tank looks great. Reminds me of my old 950 Adventure. When filling up, do you have to use both fillers? I seem to remember I had to on my 950. I'm sure Yamaha did present you all with low-filled bikes on purpose. Fuel is very heavy, and it isn't carried so low. Not as good as the Adventure 790/890 in terms of c of g. I'd buy the basic Yam. On the other hand, if the suspension is noticeably better on road...

AT MY 60 YEARS OF AGE AND 1 METER, 70 CENTERMETERS, (5 FOOT, 7 INCHES) HEIGHT. I DON'T KNOW WHICH ONE TO PICK. I WANT THE WORLD RALLY VERSION. I CURRENTLY HAVE A K.T.M. 690 ENDURO R MOTORCYCLE (2012 MODEL) I BOUGHT BRAND NEW AND HAS 103,000 KILOMETERS ON IT. IT'S 65 KILOS LIGHTER THAN THE STANDARD YAMAHA TENERE 700 MOTORCYCLE SO THE TALL SEAT HEIGHT IS NO REAL ISSUE, BUT AT 220 KILOS FOR THE WORLD RALLY VERSION I DON'T KNOW. I LIVE IN COSTA RICA SO I CAN'T AVOID GOING OFF ROAD.

Of all upgrades why not Tubeless Wheels/Tires ? A shame but then again that would add $2000 USD aprox. to the price and by then the Tuareg 660 would beat it to a pulp...

It looks to me like a rally raid version of the original with longer suspensions, flatter seat, longer range, wider footpegs, tripmaster right on the dashboard... Not to mention it was developed with the aid of Pol Tarres, Alessandro Botturi and Manuel Lucchese, who are rally/enduro riders. Street/touring riders should really buy a Tracer 9 but this looks way cooler :)

Just put a deposit on a standard t7 but in the new tech camo colour . My gs is to heavy off road , you try and justify it and say no it’s fine but on some climbs I have had to turn around as the gs just wouldn’t make it. I’ve also skimmed the heads a few times in ruts it’s just another thing to think about and get stressed about . The t7 is just lighter and easier and more fun

2500 EUR more for a better suspension? That's not a good deal. The most expensive Touratech suspension comes at 1300EUR, and most people will be quite likely fine with a much cheaper solution or even with a 200-ish EUR spring replacement. 23-liter tank, man there are very few places in the world where you will need that. Like Mongolia or maybe some super remote places in Australia. Even then, a jerry can will do. Wherever there are people, petrol will be there too. IMO, it's better to use that money to do the upgrades that are really necessary, like bike protection, and maybe higher exhaust. Use what's left for ADV rides.
