Yamaha Super Ténéré Fork Seal Replacement / Rebuild

After putting it off for too long, I go through the forks on my Yamaha Super Tenere. New seals, fresh oil and seal savers.

    I'm totally confused about the strap from the tire to the center stand...since the stand fold back toward the rear shouldn't the strap run from the stand to the front area of the bike?

    Tyler Higgins 😂😂 you are 100% right! I’m such a clown sometimes!! I guess I was thinking about when you take a rear wheel off, to run it to the front. Oh well, guess I got lucky again. Thanks for pointing it out.

    Thanks for your time in making this. Not blocking the seal install with your arm and showing the entire reassembly make the difference in good vs great instructional videos.

    Wrench in the spring trick for the win! Saved me a lot of frustration... started the job, got to that part, scratched my head and then remembered there was something in this video about a trick... worked like a charm.     This is just a basic seal replacement, you can obviously do a more thorough breakdown but it's really not necessary. Hope it goes well!

    @@TomsTinkeringandAdventures it went pretty good, took me about 3 hours... I kept going back to your video and making sure I was doing it correct. I probably should have gotten new bushings too.. Oh well... I just bought this bike, only had it for 3 days.

    Thanks for the info. Changed my Seals this last weekend. Made a seal seating driver by cutting an old seal cleanly in 2 pieces. Put them around the fork & carefully tapped new seal in with a nylon hammer. Lastly I used a metric baking jug to measure out the 485ml & poured it into the assembled fork. Manually pumped the system to cycle oil through. Thanks once again. PS, I ground a cheap 14mm wrench down to fit onto the nut easily.

    I think you’ve got the seal backwards as I’m pretty sure the spring side should be facing up into the fork not outwards.

    I guess I’d have to rewatch the video to see if I put it in wrong, but if I did it must work ok. I put 20,000 miles on it after that and sold the bike. As far as I know it’s still working. 😂

    Good vid. Just did em. Just a suggestion.... Centerstand down, why not just put a floor jack under the front of the skid to raise the front end up vs the strap cluster? Also I wrapped tape around the fork caps to keep em from getting buggered up by a wrench, they make em outta cheese.

    Just a reminder.... Yamaha wants you to check oil level.with spring guide removed. That dumb thing goes in a certain way too..... I read that after i assembled the 1st leg. Disassembled a second time to find I had installed it right the 1st time.... That sucked.

    For the Axle nut I just took a 3/4 inch bolt and welded a nut to it, been using it for years to take the wheel off. I'm cheap. carry on

    @@TomsTinkeringandAdventures Oh I agree, although I learned a long time ago to just buy a tool and not fight it. Dad was old school and would make our own tools even uhgg. On that note I did see a home made Welder in the Philippines, wraps of copper with wood around it. They asked if I wanted to use it I turned them down, no thanks :P A+ for innovation though.

    Great video. Nice tips. II have a like to do my own work too. I've had some bad experiences from 5 dealerships over the years. I have a question? Every bike I've ever done fork seals on since the 70's. Most of them were dirt bikes. I was under the impression you are supposed to back all the adjustments out. I read that in one of my service manuals long ago. Does it really matter?

    It’s probably a good practice to back everything out, less tension upon disassembly and reassembly.

    Great work! Have you any idea of the diameter of an iron axis to put at the bottom of the fork for compression with belt and the tool ? I haven't an old pin and I'd like to find a suitable axis before dismantling the forks. A 1/2 inch pin would be fine? Many thanks!

    I have a 2012, with just 10 k on it, the seals already need to be replaced. They really did a poor job on these seals.

    kal I think Yamaha should have integrated better fork protection. I always tell new owners to get seal savers....it’s what I should have done.

    Kal Howell it’s a homemade bracket from some small U bolts. Not great but it works

    Hi Tom, you did not show removing the bottom bolt which keeps the cartridge at the bottom of the fork. The book mentions a special tool to keep the cartridge still in place while you unbolt the end fork bolt (the one with the washer). Was that necessary or you were able to unbolt / bolt it back without problems ? Thanks

    Davide Emilio Marazza not specifically on the Ténéré but yes I have. I have used my air impact wrench to remove the cartridge holding bolt, no special tools required if you have an impact. In the past I used a homemade tool, really just an old broom stick that I sanded down.

    There’s no stop, you have to try to get them level

    Can you use the wrench trick to get it apart if you don’t have the tool to help compress the spring? I’ve done several dirt bike forks and figured I had all the tools but I don’t have that one.

    @@TomsTinkeringandAdventures it is. I just have a ride planned Sunday and the seals and bushings just came in today. Didn’t realize until today that that’s how those forks are setup.

    So my 2014-2015 service manual says 16.4oz, 17.11 imp. oz on one page/section of book pg. 4-101 and something totally different on pg. 4-106 gives individual oil capacity amount for left (17.07oz) vs. right (16.67oz)fork.... any ideas ?? and do you show the same on your electronic version you used in video. THANKS for the video by the way... well done Sir!

    Hi from Mexico City. Did you try cleaning the seal before changing it? I just cleaned mine but can’t use the bike because of Covid.

    Garry Dymond it started leaking when I was riding in Canada. Cleaned it a few times, it’s worth a try to clean them. It helped for quite a while.

    Tom, I just bought a 2012 super Tenere, when I hit the brakes (front brake) my forks Dive immensely, I have been adjusting the pre load, damping, and compression and they still compress alot. It that typical for these shocks, and what do you have your settings on. MY spring preload is all they way down to 4, my rebound damping is at 3 and my compression damping is at 5 and these shocks still compress like crazy.... shoots me forward on the bike.

    Anomie I’m set about in the middle on all of the settings. I went a bit farther on the preload and really think it’s too stiff. I don’t usually brake hard, but never noticed a lot of fork dive. You may want to upgrade your springs.

    James Brace tires are kind of like religion or politics, kind of personal. 😂. I have been happy with the Shinko 705, Mitas E07, Heidenau K60 and Continental TKC70. All should fit your needs along with plenty of other ones. Ride a bunch and try all of them!

    Great vid. my 2012 S10 is just now starting to ooze a bit of oil so it is time do do my forks. can i buy a complete kit that includes the bushings and the seals? if so where do you recommend? I just finished my SS1000 and I think that is what started the issue. My bike has 69000 miles and I will never get rid of it. you are awesome thanks. IBA# 76062

    TexasGater I didn’t look for a complete kit for this bike but have picked them up for other bikes from All Balls. OEM is great of course, but it’s not in a kit. Guess I will see if there’s a kit for the Ténéré.

    Robert Silva rpr motoracing it’s a measurement of distance from the top, not a liquid measurement.
