Yamaha SK50D - Synthesizer Introduction

Музыка

This video is the first part of a series of educational videos on the Yamaha SK50D synthesizer keyboard. This introduces areas of the keyboard to the viewer to understand how the keyboard can be used. Presented by Rob Adlers (Auralplane / ORGANic Evolution).
The keyboard is also hooked up to a Leslie 710 rotary speaker via the leslie Combo pre-amp, but can be hooked up to an 11 pin Leslie speaker natively. Also present are Sustain, Portamento, String Volume and Poly-Synth brilliance pedals.

CS80 aspects and more. That alone lends itself to a hugely expressive, joyous piece of apparatus to express one's inner prog. No wonder the big bucks needed and rare opportunities to obtain. 😮

I just purchased my 2nd Yamaha SK30!! Yes, as childrenoflaudanum stated, this synth is the most under-rated analog synth. Although it is not programable and does not have MIDI, it does have lots of KNOBS and is great synth to play and tweek--all in real time. This synth is probably the last big completely analog monster synth that Yamaha made before the production of the completely digital DX-7.

I never forget at around the dawn of the internet... I put up for sale a Leslie speaker, I had no clue what is was for even, other than I knew it was a speaker, it was in piss poor water damaged condition. Yet at the time someone drove from NYC to Pa. and handed me $800 bucks gladly for it, something that looked like firewood to me and he RAN with it like he had just struck GOLD.. Now I wonder, what in the hell rarity did I find and gave away for nothing ...

@LucBenOuiLuc You have a hold switch that will keep the oscillator going at the last note you held. It's a great trick! Pedals I have with this keyboard are: - two Yamaha analog volume pedals for string volume and poly synth brilliance - one damper pedal (on/off) for portamento - one damper pedal (on/off) for sustain - Leslie pre-amp combo pedal for the Leslie speakers.

I have a Yamaha SK50D that was given to me, by my wife’s uncle. Him and his wife (both musicians), played gigs, for years. He played flute, and sax, and she mastered the keyboard, as well as taught. She passed away, last year, and David (her husband) Gave this to me. He knows I am very well versed in electronics, since it does need repair. He said that one day she was playing it, then stored it away for a while. When she went to play it again, she got a single tone out of it. A technician looked at it, and thought maybe it was the power supply. I checked all of the power supply voltages, and they seem fine. I really would like to get this going. I also have the BP2 bass pedals, and the FC-3A foot controller. I was able to download the service manual, owners manual, and all of the schematics, from the internet. I realize how rare this Symphonic Ensemble is, and it would be cool to play around with it! Do you have any insite on what the problem could be that I am having, or possibly aim me in the right direction for parts (NOS of course), that may be available? Very nice playing, by the way! That Leslie, is sweet!! Thanks, Doug

@1980sCoverband Whole heartedly agree! Apparently the organ module is FM synthesis, which some of that tech wound up in the DX series. It probably borrowed from the GX series organ. It's really taught me a lot about live synth performance and modification. Still my most favoured keyboard in my collection.

Great sounding synth! To my ears, this has some things in common sound-wise with the CS series and the late 70s organs yamaha was producing around this time. Pretty rad to hear it through a leslie in the room tho. Nice demo! The "bloop-bleep" type modular synth guys should do a little more prep and make videos as watchable as this.

I have a copy I bought from Yamaha. It's a big manual with large schematic drawings. Would be nice to make into a pdf, but would take some effort. Hi Rob. Thanks for these demos. One question: is the string section capable of that very thick, chorused sound you get out of, say, a Crummar, Roland RS, Solina, etc? In the few demos of the SK50D I can find, I don't hear that sound. Thanks!

I guess it is I own a sk20 which has basically the same sound engine minus the monosynth, aftertouch and the second manual. If you route the string and poly synth through a vintage style analogue phaser you get that typical 70ies Jarre- esque sound , when you route the ogan section through a valve distortion you can instantaneously switch between, a swirling string soundscape and a heavy Jon Lord type prog rock organ.

cool. The bigger SK series would have been a great extension of the E-70 and D-85 family. A shame Yamaha did not pursue that a little further - - including adding midi to that in 1984 or 1985. That would have turned the tables. On something. Not sure what, but it would have turned the tables. Great bass out of that.
