Yamaha's 1st ATV the MOTO4! ATV Retro-REVIEW

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The Grizzly 700 and Raptor 700 are two of our favorite ATVs of all time, so we decided to go back to where it all started on the MOTO4 200!

yeah. i can see why people think they are dangerous but once you have enough seat time they are safe and way more capable then 4 wheelers. all three wheeler wrecks are operator error. three wheelers dont decide to flip. but people will always think different

My first- and no question the toughest, atv I ever owned. A 1985 Moto 4 200. As a 12 year old, it cemented my love for atv's, off-roading in general, and Yamaha. I sold some steers my grandpa had given me a few years prior. Paid $1600 for it brand new. Changed oil maaaaybe twice, washed the air filter in a parts washer (only purchased 1 new), rode in every flooded waterway on the farm and hit every creek I could find from a gravel road. Hauled countless 4x8 trailer loads of rocks from the field to the pond spillway and loads of about 16 alfalfa square bales in the hot Missouri sun. I was on top of the world working beside my dad and grandpa. No suspension that year either! We're so spoiled now lol! This has sparked my interest to find another one for the nostalgia. It totally smoked my cousins Honda 125 in a drag race too lol!

Everybody thinks they need a 1000cc, power steering, IRS, LED everything, painted plastic and then they can't figure out why they can't afford it. Basic machines like this leave you feeling so much more connected to the trail. They're more fun in their own way. Been waiting for this video for a while. Really enjoyed it!

Okay fair enough but IRS, electronic fuel injection, power steering, piggy back shocks, CVT’s, etc. are decades old Technology at this point. The ridiculous cost of ATV’s can’t be blamed on those.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane! I got a Moto-4 200 for my 13th birthday and had a couple years of adventures riding it around the family farm before upgrading to a Kodiak. It must have been a pre 86 model because it was the rigid frame before they added suspension but it was bulletproof and held up to all of the abuse of a teenager. I have fond memories of the full summer days spent riding and building forts.

Dude, I love this! So nostalgic! Everything you said is spot on. Now we have things with more horses than a Texan ranch, weighs more than a single-wide trailer, has more gadgets than a plutonium farm, and costs slightly south of an original Leonardo. Yet, smiles per gallon is unequal. There is something to be said about a ride that wants to kill you every time you put your leg over the seat. The old Honda 125 that didn't have shocks is a great example; it's only 3 mph off from probably being the worlds most notorious serial killer. Anyway, keep up the awesome vids. I often wait a few months just so I can binge your channel. Cheers from KY.

Beautiful ATV. Randomly stumbled upon your channel earlier today, and I've been hooked since. I recently got myself an '86 Moto 4 225CC with both front and rear suspension (and the different headlight setup, more similar to sub-modern late 90s-early 00s quads with the two rectangular halogen capsules). She was originally blue, but her previous owner painted her a beautiful olive green. Little to no rust anywhere with a working speedometer, trip meter, and lights. All that I'd ever need. Thank you for making such an amazing retro review on this underrated gem of an ATV platform. Just getting into the hobby as a 16 y/o and it feels nice to see my very own (or similar) ATV depicted in appreciative and nostalgic videos such as these. :)

Working 2 jobs doesn't leave me enough time to ride at home but working at a shop allows me to ride everything that comes in the door. My 86 year old dad still rides it up in our woods because no clutch lever and it has reverse. I still remember the day we bought it. Dealership was a motorsports AND gun dealer. Crazy, but I remember a "streetsweeper" 12guage (if you know, you know) for sale in the display case for $900. Please don't ask how I remember these things. Some things are burned in your brain. Great review! I've been rebuilding a abandoned 1991 moto 4 250 the last few years, its so close now! Dual mechanical drum brakes up front, I think 60mm front travel, maybe 80 rear? 25's on the back, low range! Reeeverse and a speedo! I think the 250 was a sort of premium package more then, you know, 250cc (229cc up a screaming 4ccs from the baser 225 model, wow! and you thought Polaris 800's at 760 or a Thundercat 1000 at 951 were liars!) One thing I've found about the older, lighter quads, is since they are so low to the ground (no suspension travel allows this) they are so much safer on off-cambers, and steep ascent\descent, cushy long travel suspension and ground clearance is nice until the thing is threatening a roll over and crush you to little smushed bits! can't wait to get my on the trails and compare, like you said, it'll do 95% the same thing as big monster atv's (which are pretty nice though) 5 speed is fun compared to CVT, well, perhaps the low RPM torque rich Yamaha air cooled do sap a bit of the fun away, but still! fun! (this got long!)

In Canada, the 4 wheel requirement didn't happen until 1986. In 1985 I bought a 225 DR ATC. Wonderful little machine that is still running today. As a younger man in them days, I was not easy on it but it was tougher than I ever would have guessed. It would float me in deep water as long as I kept my weight to the rear and the front air intake above the waterline. I often thought with larger tires, I could use it to fish with in calm water. In '86 the same machine was available but with 4 wheels however Yamaha sold a conversion kit to modify your tri-Moto to four wheels. I need a new bearing in the front yoke. I wonder if those kits are still available lol? P.S. If you ever have to dismount your Big Red in deep water, don't let go of the handlebars as it will turn turtle on you. The yammie will float along even being pulled with a rope !

My dad's side comes from a long line of riders and gearheads and even tho my first bike was a Suzuki rv90. My next bike after that was a yamaha yz80 lol soo yea I'm loyal to yamaha. Also had a Suzuki pe175 too that bike got down too. Only commenting because I have the exact same 4wheeler.. it's not a banshee or a raptor but it's still fun to ride and it's kid friendly

I wish aftermarket performance companies in the companies that make these ATVs and dirt bikes and other machines wouldn't give up on them and stop producing parts it's a shame it's the aftermarket and the factory Captain's machines in the back of their mind When developing new products all these old machines would be able to be maintained on a regular and you could put parts on them that would make them equal with the ATVs in Machinery coming out today

I've owned 2018+ non power steering and PS models. I'd totally take a modern "base" model with little bells and whistles to fail. And really, a big single is way more than enough. My advice to newbies has always been, you don't "need" more than a 500/570, anything past that is your testosterone speaking to you.
