The DiMarzio bridge pickup is out of phase with the Yamaha neck pickup, hence the thin sound when played together.

This is the only video that I could find on youtube that demonstrates the P90 Tone Zone. And then you go on and do a good comparison with another pickup in different styles and gain levels, so thanks a bunch! I have a Gibson Firebird with P90's and I totally love the neck pickup, but thinking about replacing the one in the bridge with a Tone Zone. Do you still have it in your guitar?

I have a black one made in Indonesia that I put a matched set of Virtual Vintage P90s (which are different that yours but matched the guitar routs. They were purchased over 18 years ago. I don't see the matched sets any more, only the DP 169 as a single pickup suggested for either neck or bridge. ) The bridge spacing on the stock pickups has the pole pieces inside the 2 outer E strings, although they seem to pick up sound just fine. The spacing on the Virtual Vintage P90 bridge is slightly wider. With no capacitor and just a volume knob, they sound fantastic. The stock pickups are adequate. The Dimarzios are even better.

Great demo! I have a 1998 Gibson Les Paul Special P-100 with the Dimarzio P90 Super Distortion in the bridge and stock Gibson P100 in the neck. How would this sound in the bridge instead of the p90 super distortion?

I liked the demo very much, since I want to replace a regular p90 in a Gibson SG for this pickup, and your AC DC riffs worked very well. My question is, Doesn't the kemper profiler change the sound completely ??

hey dude. I don't think the sound is all about the profiler. the pickups sound great and gave the guitar a slightly more raw and natural tone. the also have slightly more output und punch.

Thanks for your answer! I completely ignore how the kemper works, but it sounds incredible in all the videos I've checked. So far I think i'm gonna go for the Tone Zone . Your video and your comments helped a lot, since there aren't any other good videos for this pickup

I had a set of Dimarzio (that at the time about 20 years ago were called ) Virtual Vintage P90s. The bridge had wider string spacing than the neck, which actually was good because the stock pickup outside pole pieces sit inside the strings, although the Dimarzio still didn't sit directly under the strings. I don't think they come in but one size now. The sound was an improvement over the stock pickups but still lacked nailing the authentic P90 tone and sound. Now i think they're just called Virtual P90s. The lack of a tone knob and capacitor in the Yamaha is definitely a plus with Dimarzios

I have a Yamaha Pacifica with a Virtual P90 in the neck and love it. The bridge is a very high output D Activator X and they work great together. I don't like very high output neck pups, but I like enough output to keep up with something like a Super 3 or DAX or X2N when I need more power. Fantastic combination, and I have coil splitting on both.

That riff at 4:54 sounds awesome! Great Tone Zone sound! What is that riff? Sounds like Dokken or something. Very L.A./Sunset Strip 1986 sounding.

the stock pickups in these are surprisingly good. even for crunch I really liked it. for high gain it totally farts out of course. i have one of these tone zone p90s in the bridge of les paul gt (not gibson), and a gibson p90 in the neck. they are not super balanced (the tone zone is still really shrill and the p90 boomy compared to each other) but luckily you have two tones and two volumes, so you can get whatever mix out of the two you want.

From that sound sample I'd say definitely. I never tried the smaller TZ, only the full sized which I've owned many of. I have a TZ/Air Norton set on a strat and get similar tones. Fantastic pickup. The TZ is designed to beef up 25 scale instruments, particularly bolt-ons, which is why you often find them stock paired with Air Nortons on a number of Ibanez RG and S models. It also gets better harmonics than a JB. The high end is dialed back a bit, but that's fine. It works like a charm.

No that won't work. You have to put in humbuckers in P90 size. The only ones I found so far are made from dimarzio

I don't think either of these pups are a true P-90 design...they clearly have 2 coils each and classic P-90's are single coils...they are designed to FIT in a "soapbar" route but that is about all they share in common with a classic P-90...sound wise and design wise they are a completely different animal...
