Thank you for not including the same DX7 interface. The RefaceDX interface is excellent! I am a 35 year subtractive expert, but now for 2 years been learning FM with the DX, it is a great educational tool as well. Granular after FM.....linear??? maybe later....

soundblasters were FM lol. that's what I think of when I hear FM too.
love the jam at the end.
I've toyed around with TG77 alot, and the potential from only two operators are very good, but it's spread over an extremely wide sonic range. The reason you need more operators, is to get more variation within a small range of timbre, to make a thick sound. But also for adding percussive effects and articulation. You can do much with 4 operators like the reface dx. But you can 10 times more with 8 operators. The potential is huge. I hope Yamaha will decide to take this further. I can't wait to dig in to the reface dx.
Cool presentation. Couldn't afford a DX in it's time, so used the alternative low end 'PSS' music station 680, 780, 390 FM minisynths. Very powerful things made my early production days - even now still used ( good midi control keyboards as well!) So good to see their likes back here!
All I can hear is the Sega Genesis....

nice. the follower of my vintage PSS-390. great!
Would really like to see the Yamaha FS1R rereleased with more channels + polyphony instead of this. Now that was an amazing FM synth.
I love the richness in the sound. I can't wait to detune one of these and make some evil sounds. Lovely outtro!
I'm attempting to ascertain whether this particular model could be used and programmed to loosely emulate the other three reface models. Could it make passable piano, combo organ and analog synthesizer sounds? Yes or no?

I am no expert. But I've been told you can make almost any sound with an FM synth once you learn how to program it.
6 FM operators would be a lot better. The DX 7 keyboard scaling and actual key build is legendary. Discovered that my wavestation ex had a yamaha keybed, great feel on the original DX7.

The reface has a great interface!!!
at 1:30, I wouldn't call it Additive Synthesis. Even if I was simplifying it, I would still call it Frequency Modulation Synthesis. Example of Additive Synthesis: you take 324 sine waves and pitch them in the harmonic series to create a sawtooth. This FM synth only has 4 sine waves(operators).
@DanielDavissynthman
9 жыл бұрын
Rishabh Rajan But it is additive. Doesn't matter if you're adding 2, 3 or 3,000 oscillators, it's still adding. It's additive synthesis because you're adding stuff to create the harmonics rather than subtracting stuff with a filter to remove harmonics.
@rishabhrajan
9 жыл бұрын
No, FM doesn't not involve any addition. Ex: Operator 1 modulates Operator 2. No addition, Just frequency modulation. According to your statement then mixing a song in a DAW is additive synthesis. As thats whats happening in a DAW. It 'adds' all the tracks together.
@DanielDavissynthman

You're right - I wasn't thinking clearly. My bad.
@rishabhrajan
9 жыл бұрын
Daniel Davis According to your statement even Subtractive Synths can be called additive because I can 'add' two oscillators together and get a composite sound. Why call it subtractive then? I don't make up these definitions, they are what they are. FM is FM, Additive is Additive, Subtractive is Subtractive.

I like the easier editing option on the Reface, however I'm not a big fan of mini key's and this is a 4 operator synth whereas the DX7 was a 6 operator synth, in the end I ended up purchasing a DX7IIFD for $620 in top condition, and it is the most fun I've had on playing a synth, I actually didn't find it too difficult to program, once you figure out that you have to select each operator individually and know the layout of the buttons, you can fly through it in almost no time. While its nice to see Yamaha bring back FM, I think it would be best if they did a full size reface DX with six operators or more.
@savanaviolenta

but on DX you have feedback on each of the four operators,whereas on the DX7,while having six op's it had feedback only one op.It does make the DX to stand out with that option.
beautiful demo. Great musicians. Thank you
I just noticed on mine, the volume has 11 subdivision marks. These go to eleven!

The look somehow reminds me of my old PortaSound PS2 (first poly battery kb)
I had a DX-7! It was the first instrument I ever got. Got it from Lechmere and had to take the first one my aunt and uncle bought for me back because it had a broken power input. I loved that thing though. I want one of these. I miss the look of the old DX though. This one looks a little too plain. Half of the fun of the old one was the design.

They always compare it to the DX7 but the 7 had 6 operators - not 4. On the other hand this has 32 voices vs 16 so it does sound rich - but I think it'd be better compared to the DX-21.
Just bought a mint dx7s for 50$. Dude changed the battery and couldn't reload the patches. I tried to load them myself via sysex to no avail, so I learned to half assed program the damned thing by trial and error. These mini key things look like toys to me. Analog kicks ass on fm anyway, always did and always will.......give me knobs, and lots of em!

Not bad having a built in looper in 6:33, only why does not Yamaha licence a proper looper technology from Phil Tipping? Sequetron by Phil Tipping is a phenomenal looper, so contact Phil and check if you can license this original technology? All reface users who do not want to wait for Yamaha licensing or adding a powerful looper into reface, simply check Sequetron by Phil Tipping. It can force to scale, chords, held notes and much more, there is nothing like it I know. Vangelis and Tangerine Dreamers will love it.

Donal Finn Hey Donal, thanks for your question, here the answer: Phil pays me 0 cent, in contrary to all those advertisers here in KZread about reface or Aira and other plastic products of latest age. You recognized that I added more than one comment, great, you made the effort, you are above average. The reason I write about the looping features of Sequetron here is mainly the small form factor of reface with its three octaves, same as Micro Korg. I am a long time Sequetron user as you might find out if you check my KZread account or the Sequetron pdf manuals. So I know Sequetron quite well. If you never used or thought about Sequetron looping majesty, of course you can not understand its depth and flexibility, which is ok. It is a great way of adding great looping functionality to any keyboard, especially such small factor keyboards! If you have any more question please ask. Thanks for your attention my friend.
I find it funny that they continue attempt to compare this to a DX7 when it's clearly nothing more than a souped up DX21. Sorry, but 4 ops is 4 ops...There is a distinct difference between 6 ops verses 4 ops. Yamaha is clearly attempting to profit off of the famous DX7 history and that's fine, if they created a DX7 equivalent keyboard. But seeing that this is a 4 op with mini keys, it's just a modern interpretation of a DX100. Which is not a bad unit, it's just not a DX7 either.

Ed Kummel totally agree. Weak sounding noises out of this thing compared to a DX7. I have a MODX which does have 8 ops and the Reface DX comes nowhere near it. I had a DX21 and this sounds very similar, and has none of the power of the DX7. The effects are irrelevant as I’m sure most of us that owned the lower range used pedals or rack effects anyway.

Piano and harp sounds are available but they sound how you'd expect from FM Synthesis. Nothing like a real E-piano, but not awful. Harp is worse. Q.3 You can save them when you sync the sound then use the 'STORE' function on the keyboard. It will store it and keep it after you unplug it, you can later restore the previous/stock patch if you want.

+sickparrot23 I own a DX7 for the last 25 years. While this isnt in the same class. I can tell you 100% its ALOT BETTER THAN A DX27. This is the best 4 op FM synth of alltime. Yamaha have done a great job in simplifying a complex form of synthesis. Down to a level it becomes a joy to use. And with the inclusion of the hands on editing bars. You are inspired to get sounds that nobody would have pushed for in the 1980s not even Eno. Its a great little synth. And does great drum and percussion sounds too. The kick drums it can do are amazing.

Nice sounds but if your much into this sound try the other much more versatile and cheaper options like plug-ins connected to a nice controller. Buy fx separately so you can use the fx on every instrument of future purchase :)

FM is NOT additive!!
@keithfisher7333
7 жыл бұрын
Ableton and DSP Tutorials.... In the case of the DX7 it is either additive, FM or both...It depends on the algorithm. The operators will be used as sound sources or modulators depending on the configuration that is laid out in the algorithm. It can be used as an additive synth but to most likely boring effect. To those that don't know....An operator consists of an oscillator an EG and basically a VCA or volume control. The output, again depending on algorithm, will go to the audio output or to the modulation input of another operator. You have 8 voices and 4 operators per voice. Those operators maybe configured 3 mods into one audio...2+2 like a double oscillator setup, etc... Nevertheless, you would learn a lot more about a DX7 toying with a Buchla than toying with a Moog...Buchla's concept was much more about wave shaping with the tone control happening at the oscillator...In this case, very much the same...In additive aspects, super imposing waveforms on top of each other with an EG VCA circuit. Starting with a sine from one op, and having another op impose and mix a saw into that in a contoured fashion.
1. This performance is absolutely terrible. Nothing in this video makes me want to even consider buying that toy. 2. You can get the original DX11 for about the same money on Ebay.
Here we go yet again. Korg with their absolutely rubbish, (87% of the original size MS 20 mini synth.) All surface mount and near impossible to repair, complete with flimsy plastic body, and those "mini keys" to complete the utter shambles. Now, Yamaha have jumped on the same bandwagon. It's a disgrace! The amount of money these companies made producing good quality keyboards made of quality components, with metal and wood casings to now vomit onto the market such utter rubbish is beneath contempt. Moog still make the best synths in the world to a very, very high standard. They are by comparison to Korg and Yamaha a very small concern. I own a Minimoog Voyager performer edition. Hand built, of metal and wood and top quality electronics. Mine is quite old, but, has never gone bang. Built like a tank and sounds better than anything that these peddlers of rubbish could ever produce. If Korg or Yamaha want to take a trip down memory lane....by all means improve on the older designs, bit, for the love of Mike, don't make toys. Rant over. Peace and respect to all.

Surface mount is not inherently bad, nor is it hard to repair if you are at all handy with a soldering iron. Surface mount components allow electronics to be built much more compactly and cheaper. I get it if you dislike the miniaturization of instruments, but I also get that for people who buy a lot of equipment, mini-sized stuff has its benefits. I don't necessarily want or even need a full-size keyboard or any keys for that matter on every single synthesizer that I own. Seriously, thank god not every synth is made from heavy wood and metal. As long as they withstand reasonable use, I'll gladly take the weight savings.
