@@gorillachilla Hm, I have watched both the 8bit keys Reface DX review and this video, and I prefer DKS's demo. (Tho' if you want a review or to see what can be done with a drum machine and multiple tracks from the Reface DX, 8bit keys's review is better)

It’s nice to watch sound demos with no talking, but that doesn’t mean that product presentations have any less value in them. When a host is presenting a product and talks about it, you get to learn many important things about the features of that particular product, which helps a lot because it makes it easier to make an informed decision on which product to buy. We don’t need to choose between A or B when it’s possible to have both. I personally enjoy watching both product presentations as well as sound demos. There is nothing really wrong about Sonicstate’s product presentations imo.

the LEGEND is back !! this is the ONLY analog synth that plays the legendary DX E Piano **properly** . . and when i say properly i mean PROPERLYYYY !!! NONE of the modelling and vsti/software versions i have tried since 1996 could authentically RECREATE the sound of the Legendary DX E-Piano . . but this little reincarnation --from Yamaha themselves-- DOES IT AUTHENTICALLY !! there are NO E-PIANOS IN THE WORLD that sound like the DX LENGEND E PIANO, period !!

tebogomotlhale i mean, idk the Volca FM does it pretty well, considering it has 6 operators and this has 4 so the Volca does sound closer. Theres a comparison of the Volca FM against the DX7 here on youtube and most patches sound pretty similar, especially the E piano

Sorry this is a 4-op synth not a 6-op synth like the real Dx7. I own the Dx7 and the dx7iiFD. This Reface sounds good but sounds are less complex (detailed) than the Dx7.

@@r3furbish3dbrain12 huge overrated difference, since this only helps to make noise, not complex sounds. The DX7 sounds richer -- there are comparison videos online, and I own a DX7 too. In fact just some weeks ago a guy wanted to trade his Reface DX for my DX7 MK1.

I have a Reface CS and it works great as a MIDI keyboard. If you are a beginner you may want to look at the CS first.

@@Zemtex47 well, the dx is the much different synth of four.. fm is a little bit difficult to program but on reface dx you have a good interface for program your sounds. With both CS and DX reface you can use Soundmondo for load and share sounds ( for Free). If you need an "analog style" synth go for reface CS (but you have to use soundmondo for saving and recall sounds). Korg microkorg is really good sounding synth with a shit key. Mininova is the same, good synth with super shitty keys (many mininova have broken keys after short amount of time). I love FM sounds but also analog sounds.. this is up to you! the basic of the basic is the Reface CS, i've not purchased the CS for the lack of internal storage and i've sold my reface DX only because i've montage as main digital synth. If you have other question, i'm here cheers Daniele

I want to create my own sounds because that is what makes it interesting to me. I tried a friends Yamaha CP and it was great so I thought it is time for my first Synth. As classic as the DX7 is, I've been looking for something to capture the YM2203 sound and that's lead me to the DX100, which is close, and that lead me here. So now I'm debating between this, a DX100, or a TX81z. Oh god my wallet.

Question for you, this reminds me of the DX7 but into the DX100 form factor. My question is, are you using and external chorus effects? Or is everything you are playing coming from the synth itself? Back in the day (the 80's), with DX synths, we used to hook up external chorus and flanger boxes in the signal chain.

I'm SO torn between getting this or the Yamaha Reface CS... but that slow attack pad that you play at at time mark 11:24 .. it seems that the Reface DX has a lot more going for it in regards to the versatility of sounds it can make.

Only Fm into the reface Dx, no acoustic piano here, you can create an fm piano sound but not a real acoustic sound.. ;)

I've always seen it as a cool (tinted slightly blue) gray color. But upon investigation, it's aubergine'ish.

Yes its marvellous treated this way. The lack of 5 octaves with those tiny keys is annoying..But play this with a quality controller keyboard. And you will really love it. When you can get those lower bass notes and the higher ones too. The real power of this little gem will come through. For example. If you want to play JUMP with one of the brass patches. To capture it properly you need to get those gritty resonating lower notes with your left hand while playing the main riff with your right hand. And you cannot do that on this small awkward keyboard. With 49 keys. So a quality 61 note controller or even a 61 notes synth. Is the ticket to really enjoying this little gem. The same with the REFACE CS. With a full sized keyboard its magic.

As a non keyboard player who operates his synths via sequencers,I wonder why companies don’t build them as modules in the first place. Everyone hates small keys. My fingers aren’t particularly chubby, but I’d hit two keys at the same time on a regular basis.

unfortunately with reface DX you only have 4 operators instead of 6 like DX7, you can recreate sounds like DX100, DX11, DX21, DX27 and DX9 for example, so the sounds are not exactly the same of a DX7, but surely you have a small synth with also great sounds ;)

Yes its sweet isnt it. On the lower notes you get that classic resonatong analogue like sound. Tweak it can sound like an OBXA. And instant JUMP.

Yes. There is an app / site, Soundmondo, which acts as a patch librarian, beyond the 24 patches you can edit and save directly on the synth.

You cannot control a VST plugin with an audio signal. You need to connect a MIDI cable from MIDI OUT port on DX to MIDI IN on a MIDI interface that should be connected to a computer, which is supposed to run your VST plugin inside a DAW.

Then you can buy WAVES Electric 200 piano plugin and/or a Electric piano 88 and you'll get all the el.pianos from Rhodes ect, that are actually present on the other reface CP if I'm correct and save yourself ton of money while having the best of the Reface - DX and the other el.pianos too.

The additional parameters and effects make up for that. You will think this is better than 6 op and certainly much easier to program. Two bits of advice though turn off those awfull onboard plastic sounding effects. And put this through a quality multi effects processor a DECENT CHORUS. Then you will love it even more.

PROJECT DX I don’t think the built in effects are that bad. Not as good as a $200 pedal but for some built in effects, at this price, they’re quite nice.

I used to have the DX-21, which was 4 operators and it sounded HUGE live...

the reface series are all great but after the MODX6 ,is out it costs the price of all the four together butit offers 100 times greater sounds,really a no brainer.

some. the DX7 is a 6-operator FM synth. the reface DX is only 4-operator, so it doesn't have quite the same level of control.

@@zackhartmann it's worth noting that the feedback controls on each operator aren't "real" feedback, but rather a waveshaper. What I mean is, if you set a feedback level, and then hit a note at different velocities, you should hear different waveforms at different velocities as the effect of the feedback is higher or lower -- but on the reface, the waveform is always the same (based on the feedback level you set), and only the level increases/decreases with velocity. This makes it less useful than the classic FM feedback mechanism, BUT having it on all four operators gives you more options at your disposal. In other words, there are things the DX7 can do with its feedback that the Reface cannot, but there are also things the Reface can do with its *waveshaping* that the DX7 cannot.
