It sounds fuller than a DX27/100 - but less so than a DX7 - would it be inaccurate to say it's akin to a DX-21? Solphase sounds nice and crunchy - perfect for getting your Gary Numan on.

Pure Ambient Drone Is Reface DX better than Volca FM?

  • @PureAmbientDrone

I have NOT had the chance to get my hands on one. I hear it is more like a DX 100 than the classic 7. In my experience there are trade offs between classic and newer gear. For instance, I have a Yamaha SY22 and you just can not get sounds from a plugin or newer gear that gives you that dirty grit and unique sound that makes MY sound stand out. I tried all sorts of gear on my "Withdrawl" track and nothing got the strings and piano to sit in the mix except 20+ year old synths that I sprinkled in the track. I guess my point is, if you want that classic sound, get the classic machines. I am sure there are some on here that will not agree with me and that's fine because music is an art and everyone has a different way about getting what they want out of their sound. :) Here is a link to "Withdrawl" Listen to the piano and strings. They are very unique. (I hope YT shows the link) pureambientdrone.bandcamp.com/track/withdrawl

+speedtribejp 100 times better. Korg did a good job with the MS20 and Arp Odyssey remakes. But they should leave FM. To Yamaha. Even with only 4 ops. Theyve done a great job here.

I wonder if we'll see a full size pure FM based synth again with the whole analog resurgence. I know DSI has now implemented linear FM in their Prophet 12, I wonder if they, or any other company would bring a completely new FM based synth out just to stand out from everyone chasing analog based synths. I don't think there are any on the market currently.

No, people do not play on full size 61 keyboards anymore nor do they store their patches. They basically just hold down a note and turn a knob.

My compromise ended up being to get an Akemie's Castle. Not quite the same on any level, but it's definitely the most-hands on of the FM synths where programming is concerned.

Ermm... I think so. I own the Reface CP, and I've played a Korg Odyssey keyboard in a shop (then bought the module version, instead). If you mean the Korg MicroKORG, the Reface keys are longer and MUCH better to play. They're both really nice (mini) keybeds, but the Korg Oddy one lacks velocity - it's just switches. The Reface ones can be used as a general MIDI keyboard controller, with velocity, though they lack a MOD wheel. The main thing is, both the Refaces and the Korg Odyssey have keys that are long enough and hinged far enough back, to comfortably play them close to the top of the key - e.g. if you wanted to play a chord with your thumb and pinky on black keys, so your other fingers were further up. The extra length means you don't feel the need to put fingers right at the top of the keys either. On a lot of mini keys, like the microKorg, you have to press uncomfortably hard, close to the top of the key, and if they're velocity sensitive, you struggle to get anything like the same velocity from a black key and a white key. I have a Korg microKontrol (MIDI Keyboard with knobs), which I bought when I didn't know any better. The keybed is exactly the same as in the microKORG and it's bloody awful. I never use it, any more.

It is a very nice keybed. They are not mini-keys like you may find on the Roland JD or the Novation Mininova -- they are longer keys. That makes it easier to play in keys that use sharps.

@@savanaviolenta - and depending on vintage gear in the studio or live? Yikes! I love vintage gear - but I'd never mission-critical them. I'm a huge fan of re-issues and boutique hardware like the Roland D-05. Yes, you could get an emu for your laptop or ipad DAW - but where's the fun in that. Plus chaining a couple of boutiques and mini's into a Roland 800 controller - huge space saver.
