Hey just one correction that will help us all understand the geometry of the situation: the pivot point of the swingarm and the rear axle are always at the same distance. You can imagine that as it swings up and down, the tip of the swing arm forms a slice of a circle with the swingarm shaft at its center, and by definition all points of a circumference are at equal distance from the center. So why does the chain stretch and loose? Because there's a 3rd point we need to consider: the end of the chain is not at the swingarm pivot point, it's further away at the front sprocket! And that spot, like the swingarm shaft is always fixed. So the shortest path for the chain (when it is at its loosest spot) is when the front sprocket, the swingarm shaft and the rear axle form a straight line (the shortest path between 3 points is a straight that contains all 3). What that means is that when the only mobile point (the rear axle) moves due to suspension travel, it will change the distance between all 3 points and thus the chain must have some play to account for that!

One of the better chain videos but 1¾ inch chain slack is the largest amount ive ever heard of on a road bike. My FZ8N says 25 to 30mm or about 1 inch.

I just looked a the manual it says from just under 1 inch to just under 1.5 ? Also the manual says to check it closer to the rear sprocket

I get a clunk clunk sometimes at start off. Definitely from front sprocket. As if chain jumping. Sprockets look OK. Di you think chain is stretched?

Did you ever actually mess with the chain tightening in this vid or did I miss that.

Which of the 2 bolts do I use, how do they work? The 2 bolts that one of which would adjust the chain, I have watched a few videos where they skip this detail. I just don't have the mind for mechanics I guess. I only need to adjust my chain, tighten it. I have a hyosung gt650r which has the same mechanism for the chain tensioner/tightening bolt as this r1

You have to loosten the jam nut on the tensioner bolt, then back the bolt out and re-tighten the jam nut. Do both sides evenly and ensure your wheel is aligned.
