Yamaha MT-09/FZ-09 Honest Review
I finally got my hands on the Yamaha MT-09/FZ-09. After multiple days riding this motorcycle I managed to acquire a grasp of the pros and cons. This review features 2018 MT09, which is different to the previous generation that started in 2014 and ended in 2016. I talk about the subjects such as the things I like and dislike about the motorbike, and whether it is a good fit for you whether you are advanced rider or a beginner.

Hope you enjoyed this video. Have a nice day!
Thank You!

    I’ve been riding a FZO9 for two years and it’s still just as fun today as it was the first day I rode it. I’m a 130lb woman so don’t have the complaints that some have regarding the suspension but I’m a city rider and don’t track my bike so for me it’s not an issue. This bike has a lot of low end power so it’s super fun for everyday city riding. Recommended getting a steering damper because if you like those quick bursts of high speed the front end wobbles a bit, I notice it 180km/hr and up.

    I bought a damper for my 2017 & it improved the head shaking but did not eliminate it. It also doesn't feel all that stable in the middle of fast corners. In comparison my brothers Ducati Hypermotard handles much better.

    Thanks they are definitely stiffer than your regular shoes and it is pretty difficult to put them on, but in no way will they come off in a crash they are really secure on your foot. This is my second season riding in them and the spot on the shoe where it meets shifter has faded quite a bit from friction (same case on the bottom from downshifting). Otherwise it’s a good shoe will be buying another pair when these are worn out. So far aside from visual damage, the structure of these are the same :)

    3 things i don't necessarily agree with as I own a 2017 FZ-09 from new. 1) First gear is intentional a low gear as it is a naked and a hooligan bike not intended to be smooth criminal. 2) The rear brake is not supposed to be over powering. I been riding for almost 30 years and a strong rear break will only get you into trouble if ya slam on it and slide the rear tire. 90% of the time I use the engine brake and front brake for stopping power 3) Please reviewers don't complain about the suspension if you don't have it properly set up for your size and weight. The dealer freely set up the suspension for me and its pretty incredible for not being an actual super sport motorcycle. I do agree the slipper clutch has a little delay in activation but its not a deal breaker for me. I own this bike and a Kawasaki ZRX1200R that I bought new in 2005. Both are fun to ride but when i want to do high speed passes the REX is my go to bike...

    What mt09 version you've tested I want one. I had 2017 mt09 and it was a pure nightmare to ride in city traffic due to a very snappy throttle response. Also for some reason, nuts are offensive to this bike the seat makes you slide and hit your nuts on the gas tank now combine it with the aggressive engine braking on this bike and rip nuts. Hated the living shit this bike everyone I need to do something practical like commuting to work but loved it when I wanted to ride like a total ass.

    After owning this thing for several years (having owned about 9 other bikes, test ridden well over 50).... there's a long list of things I can pick nits over. Some things are quite glaring. The competition in this category is making Yamaha look dusty, in every way but the motor. I had a Z900. Wish I had it again.

  • @UpshiftNL

    @UpshiftNL

    4 жыл бұрын

    Honest comment! What makes you want the Z900 back over the MT09? It always feels like everyone is so much more hyped over the MT09 then the Z900.

  • @exothermal.sprocket

    @exothermal.sprocket

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@UpshiftNL The hype is the engine, the noise, the manner in which it produces thrust (overall feel at a given rpm). Secondly the hype has to do with the lightweight which is pretty low in the category (425-428 lb). Outside these two features, nothing else about the bike is remarkable. Comparatively, the Z900 has a great motor for an i-4. It's butter smooth, much more than the Yamaha's grainy vibes. In fact, after fully broken in the Z is almost glassy. It's tuned for solid torque most everywhere, but only a touch less at the bottom than the triple which is just the nature of one less cylinder with closely comparative displacement, bore/stroke ratio, compression, etc. But where the Z shines is the chassis balance the feedback from the road surface, the confidence it gives you. It's plenty powerful enough. Doing equal tuning on both the MT and the Z yields practically identical gains for both, as well as weight loss for both, so the power-to-weight ratio remains the same when comparing identical mods. That said, the Z is a little greater power to weight overall, makes more torque when it hits 6K+rpm. Z has better switchgear, better instrument display with faster sample rates for the data, suspension is better setup from factory (both the MT and Z need cartridges and a shock, honestly) and feels as confident as the MT doing everything 30-40 mph faster, especially cornering stability and confidence. It's got a 3L larger fuel capacity in spite it being less efficient still finds 20 miles greater range at all times. Transmission doesn't whine and howl in any gear, as the MT whines and howls in several gears especially 6th (not a durability or function issue, just noise). Ergonomics on the Z are much more favorable for doing things at speed, less leg room to the pegs but better stance everywhere else. I personally like slightly narrower bars because one's lever and grip functions don't influence the wheel as much and aid in perceived stability, less wide stance, less wind drag at the shoulders/arms (there's a reason supersports use clipons). Z rear brake is better functionally in power and feedback. Z fit and finish overall is higher quality and cleaner design, speaking of wires, hoses, plastics, signals, general part assemblies around the subframe and tank. Yamaha is messy and has far too much plastic bits dangling around the front and radiator and tail, the signal stalks being stupidly weak mounting. Yamaha's dainty switchgear is a joke, jabbing the horn when you reach for the signal, the signal switch being the cheapest feeling low tactility thing ever (1980's bikes were much better). The triple is a cracker of a motor, but the ECU programming makes it a pain to exploit. All can be fixed in that regard, but plan to fork over $1500 for that. OEM to OEM, the Z is much more refined, confidence inspiring, less fussy, better equipped, more capable, more easily accessible and controllable. Both machines would benefit with aftermarket, the Z a better experience from the start. All comes down to which application fits your desires and uses better. These are canvass bikes. Paint a picture.

    Yamaha Corporation is known for EXCELLENT ELECTRONICS. Why can't that fact flow into the gauge display, the fuel meter, the feedback about fuel economy, the accuracy of the speedometer, the cheap and tiny switchgear on the bars which is arranged JUST RIGHT to make you stab the stinking horn every other time you go to turn.....? Oh, and let's not get into the choppy throttle calibrations which are only exacerbated by the stringent noise and emissions regs make it worse.... Can all be fixed and forgiven. With 3 thousand dollars. hahaha! And I own an '18. And I'm still torn whether I just throw money to the breeze and fix everything like I know it can, or visit Kawasaki for a nice Z900.....

    Luka M. Its not a good choice for a first bike. A first bike should be forgiving of a beginners mistakes. It needs to be easy to learn new skills on. This is a bike for experienced riders. Try an mt03 or mt07 as a first bike if you like the yamahas.

    its very individual, depends on your personality, if you can truly respect the bike for what it is and not ride with your ego after a week thinking 'now you know the bike', you will be fine, but from a logical stand point its almost always a better and safer decision to start on something smaller like the 07 which was my first bike for example, and given you get in a bad situation the 07 is far more forgiving.
