Here's Why The Yamaha MT-09 Is NOT For You...

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Today I'm doing a review of the Yamaha MT-09 (fz-09, fz09, mt09) motorcycle. I'll talk about the pros and cons as well as why I do not recommend this motorcycle for beginner riders. As always, these are just my thoughts and opinions.

    If you're going to be dumb on a MT-09 you will be dumb on a R3. Its all just how you approach any motorcycle mentally in my opinion. I will agree this bike will get you in trouble quickly. It was my first bike and you will learn throttle control quickly, But... if you keep the TCS on level 2 for a while so the front won't come up on you and the power gets killed a little when you're being too frisky then you tend not to panic as much learning the power curve of the bike. It's been 3 years now and im still here.... for now. I have very much enjoyed the Mt-09 and learned alot on it. Some good/some bad.

    Can confirm, sort of. Was an idiot on an R3, and am now an idiot on an MT-09, very soon to be an idiot on a 1290R. But that said, honestly I'm glad I started on the R3, that bike gave me rock solid fundamentals before I got the 09. Imo starting on an 09 will stunt ones development as a rider both because it's a lot of power to start on and the suspension and chassis really aren't well suited for an inexperienced rider.

    The thing is the consequences of doing dumb stuff on an R3 are different than on an FZ/MT09, the 09 is definitely less forgiving. Fucking love my fz09 to no end, but yeah it's a rowdy ass bitch, in the wrong hands it will mess you up big time if you let it

    I love my brand new MT 09, puts a big silly stupid grin on my face EVERY time I ride it. Been riding 52 years, I'm 62. Is this a bike for beginner riders IMO, oh HELL no, your chances of becoming a "statistic" are FAR too great, again, IMO. Hell it even intimidates me on occasion. Just know and accept your limitations. Ride with some smart sense and respect. But most of all of course, have a good time!!!

    Yeah I bought it for my first bike a couple months ago....let’s just say I’ve done some accidental wheelies...good thing is I haven’t dropped it or hurt myself on it but doesn’t mean I haven’t almost killed myself. Through out the months I start to learn to respect the bike more and more.

    Defiantly not for wild riders. I work at a dealership and one of our guys had one and he was notorious for the cool guy fly by and one day I saw him rear end a car at about 100 and do a wicked quadruple front flip. It was pretty spectacular. Luckily he only broke his legs and didn’t die.

    Have a healthy respect for mine - it scares me but I think that’s what will keep me alive. It’s uncomfortable, too loud (Akra titanium), uses way too much fuel. It’s black on black, looks like an attack dog. But so much character. A blast to ride. Gurgle gurgle pop pop off throttle. Had to get it just so I ‘knew’.

    13:38 that was a clutch up no? My 2018 won't power wheelie in second on STD and TCS on 1. It either goes in to power cut or just lifts 20 cm off ground then back down. If l try a clutch up most of the time the TCS will cut it too. Even in first gear the TCS 1 interferes most of the time. Any insights to power up in second while it's on TCS 1 ?

    Jon, your honesty is always appreciated. I'm a cruiser dude, and when I got my Stryker 4 years ago, after dreaming of one since 2011, your video's made me pull the trigger... and Shadetree Surgeon was the one that pushed me into finally getting my bike! lol two of my favorite channels. But i've always liked the naked bikes, yamaha especially... the MT's always peaked my interest, and the smaller ER-6N. I guess i'll look for something a little more docile for a first naked. lol

From memory, gurssing an MT-09 or the MT-10... could have been the FZ model also... But that was the "naked" sports bike that made me even consider one. Thanks for the info Jon, always appreciated! I got a 2017 earlier this year as my 5th overall motorcycle and the twitchy throttle almost got me in an accident several times. Took me months to get the feel for it, especially mid turn when getting back on the throttle. • @lucyferina

    @lucyferina

    I switched from the V star cruiser to the MT10 and the MT09 and yes you definitely feel more exposed. In the cruiser you see the tank, handle bars and wheel, on the nakeds mostly asphalt which is why I went and got proper motorcycle pants and proper boots. When I had the cruiser I felt safe with only jacket and gloves, of course helmet always but I neglected the rest wearing just jeans and regular boots because that false sense of security that cruisers give you. If you fall at speed on asphalt from any bike and you slide for 25 feet or more, if you are not wearing the proper gear you will pay a lot more than what you would've spent on the most expensive gear remember that.....

    lucyferina - Exactly. I have two powerful naked bikes and a Honda Helix 250cc scooter. I wear all the gear on each one. You absolutely feel safer on the Helix but make no mistake, if I go down on the scooter at speed, the asphalt doesn't care what I'm riding.

    I just got this bike and rode it for the first time the other day. For context, I'm coming from a CBR600RR which I street+track and been riding for over a decade. The torque delivery of the MT-09 is intimidating! I find it just as intimidating as the Super Duke 1290 R. The throttle is definitely "snatchy" even in B mode and makes it difficult to to accelerate moderately. And the seating position makes it feel like you're right over the front wheel which further enhances the sense of rapid-ness. But man is it fun! Definitely would NOT suggest as a first bike. Even if you don't kill yourself you'll waste too much time trying to manage the bike that could be better spent learning to build up your riding skills.

    Love my MT 09, definitely an animal. Using it, or any powerful bike, is all about picking moments. Where you have good sight lines, no upcoming intersections, ect. Ride smart, and you can have a blast. It's totally possible to ride it normally even in A mode

  • @wymonwatson1309

    A mode is the performance mode, I usually ride my 2017 in std mode with tc on 1, mines been flashed and is still very twitchy in a mode, I only use it if I'm going to do a roll race. B mode is pretty weak and a good way to get used to the bike for the first few days, or if it's raining. Overall I love my yamaha, and Ina year or two I will probably upgrade to the mt10, the 09 is plenty powerful, but I just want a little more.

  • @leopardpro2878

    @leopardpro2878

    @@wymonwatson1309 there isn't enough difference in reality to warrant the upgrade, best to just drop 1 tooth on the front and add 2 on the back of your 09 and really enjoy it. if you are going for top end, best to just get a different bike completely so you don't have comparison lodged in your head because like I said, you won't notice much difference. Slower acceleration and better over 70mph for the MT-10 and that's literally it. Keep your 09 because you will 100% regret getting rid of it and make it your play bike, and believe me if you keep it you will bring it out a fair few times a year and then go get yourself either a gixxer, or a z1000 and go with something that's the total opposite way. Buy the MT-10 and I guarantee you will be disappointed!

    Why do people get a naked bike over the sport version? Is it the looks, or is it cheaper for when you drop the bike? Have you done anything with performance baggers? I just saw a video about that where they take a bagger and race with a stripped down version. Not sure if stunters are also into racing

It’s closer to the Duke 890, but the 890 is much more flickable. You should ride a Super Duke just to see how crazy those top tier bikes really are. I’m still waiting to try out an H2.

I drove it from Austin to San Antonio (100+ miles) in 30 degree weather on A mode since I knew absolutely nothing about this or any motorcycle in general and almost made it. Ended up crashing into a wall about 5 minutes from my house. The twitchy throttle is real. The only reason i kept the bike is because I consider myself one of those very disciplined people you spoke about, but for anyone out there that don’t meet the criteria you mentioned in the video stay away from this bike.
