Here's Why The Yamaha MT-09 Is NOT For You...
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Today I'm doing a review of the Yamaha MT-09 (fz-09, fz09, mt09) motorcycle. I'll talk about the pros and cons as well as why I do not recommend this motorcycle for beginner riders. As always, these are just my thoughts and opinions.

If you're going to be dumb on a MT-09 you will be dumb on a R3. Its all just how you approach any motorcycle mentally in my opinion. I will agree this bike will get you in trouble quickly. It was my first bike and you will learn throttle control quickly, But... if you keep the TCS on level 2 for a while so the front won't come up on you and the power gets killed a little when you're being too frisky then you tend not to panic as much learning the power curve of the bike. It's been 3 years now and im still here.... for now. I have very much enjoyed the Mt-09 and learned alot on it. Some good/some bad.

Can confirm, sort of. Was an idiot on an R3, and am now an idiot on an MT-09, very soon to be an idiot on a 1290R. But that said, honestly I'm glad I started on the R3, that bike gave me rock solid fundamentals before I got the 09. Imo starting on an 09 will stunt ones development as a rider both because it's a lot of power to start on and the suspension and chassis really aren't well suited for an inexperienced rider.
@crazycamkalani
6 ай бұрын
The thing is the consequences of doing dumb stuff on an R3 are different than on an FZ/MT09, the 09 is definitely less forgiving. Fucking love my fz09 to no end, but yeah it's a rowdy ass bitch, in the wrong hands it will mess you up big time if you let it
I love my brand new MT 09, puts a big silly stupid grin on my face EVERY time I ride it. Been riding 52 years, I'm 62. Is this a bike for beginner riders IMO, oh HELL no, your chances of becoming a "statistic" are FAR too great, again, IMO. Hell it even intimidates me on occasion. Just know and accept your limitations. Ride with some smart sense and respect. But most of all of course, have a good time!!!

Yeah I bought it for my first bike a couple months ago....let’s just say I’ve done some accidental wheelies...good thing is I haven’t dropped it or hurt myself on it but doesn’t mean I haven’t almost killed myself. Through out the months I start to learn to respect the bike more and more.

I've done 130 with no fairing on an old '79 Suzuki GS750. Man, after 110, you are just hanging on for life as the wind works to kill you. Have fun and stay alive!
@aronob

I was actually wondering that, on my Dr650 I go top speed on the freeway like 70-75mph but on barely windy days can’t stand going over 65, I know is a different sitting ergonomics in general and bike capabilities, but wind is wind lol
Defiantly not for wild riders. I work at a dealership and one of our guys had one and he was notorious for the cool guy fly by and one day I saw him rear end a car at about 100 and do a wicked quadruple front flip. It was pretty spectacular. Luckily he only broke his legs and didn’t die.
I'd love to have that stretch of land available to flex a motorcycle like that!
Have a healthy respect for mine - it scares me but I think that’s what will keep me alive. It’s uncomfortable, too loud (Akra titanium), uses way too much fuel. It’s black on black, looks like an attack dog. But so much character. A blast to ride. Gurgle gurgle pop pop off throttle. Had to get it just so I ‘knew’.
I bought this for my first street bike 8 years ago. I was very careful and never really gave it full throttle and rode it in restricted mode. If you are really mature and don't an ego in the streets it is a good bike.

XSR900, different, less super-moto riding position, better tuned suspension, different ecu tune, TC, and oh those 80's RD350 retro looks....
Hmmm. I have a 2009 Yamaha FZ6 right now and Im looking to get something else. It's a tie between and The Tracer 900. Is this bike have more upright when it comes to seating positon? My back can't handle proper sport bikes anymore.
13:38 that was a clutch up no? My 2018 won't power wheelie in second on STD and TCS on 1. It either goes in to power cut or just lifts 20 cm off ground then back down. If l try a clutch up most of the time the TCS will cut it too. Even in first gear the TCS 1 interferes most of the time. Any insights to power up in second while it's on TCS 1 ?
Loves your vids mate 👌 I’ve ridden the MT09 I think it was a 2015 model and the torque was good but rear of the bike was disappointing, I owned a 2016 speed triple and was a much better bike , now I own a 2016 mt10 and it is by far my favorite bike I’ve ridden so far 👌 Ive also owned a few 1000cc and 600cc sports bikes . Love to see you do a vid on the mt10 . Cheers

Jon, your honesty is always appreciated. I'm a cruiser dude, and when I got my Stryker 4 years ago, after dreaming of one since 2011, your video's made me pull the trigger... and Shadetree Surgeon was the one that pushed me into finally getting my bike! lol two of my favorite channels. But i've always liked the naked bikes, yamaha especially... the MT's always peaked my interest, and the smaller ER-6N. I guess i'll look for something a little more docile for a first naked. lol

😂 yeah, "in your hands" its an entire different ball game!! 😂 I've spotted a Yamaha naked years ago, guessing between 2015-2020, the thing was stunning... all black... spotted the Yam logo but didn't know what model it was. From memory, gurssing an MT-09 or the MT-10... could have been the FZ model also... But that was the "naked" sports bike that made me even consider one. Thanks for the info Jon, always appreciated! Ride safe brother.
I got a 2017 earlier this year as my 5th overall motorcycle and the twitchy throttle almost got me in an accident several times. Took me months to get the feel for it, especially mid turn when getting back on the throttle. It is a fkn blast to ride though, more fun than my CBR600RR was even though the CBR is superior in many ways ie brakes and suspension
What are your thoughts 🤔 about the bmw s1000r?
Very good point! It is much more fun to drive a slow bike fast then drive a fast bike slow!
Love my FZ07. First thing I did was upgrade rear and front suspension (Ohlins) and a throttle tamer among other upgrades. Rides like a champ. Great for the canyons

Had to get rid of my gsx-s1000 for this reason. Too much fun and too much running because of it. Buttttt the itch has returned. Next season I'll be adding either a MT09, MT10, ZH2 or a 1290 SDR. The softail and stryker just aren't cutting it.
It's all about how you choose to ride it, any bike has the potential that you speak of.
You're more exposed to the wind on the mt-09 than on a sport bike, but equally exposed to the asphalt.
@lucyferina
3 жыл бұрын
I switched from the V star cruiser to the MT10 and the MT09 and yes you definitely feel more exposed. In the cruiser you see the tank, handle bars and wheel, on the nakeds mostly asphalt which is why I went and got proper motorcycle pants and proper boots. When I had the cruiser I felt safe with only jacket and gloves, of course helmet always but I neglected the rest wearing just jeans and regular boots because that false sense of security that cruisers give you. If you fall at speed on asphalt from any bike and you slide for 25 feet or more, if you are not wearing the proper gear you will pay a lot more than what you would've spent on the most expensive gear remember that.....
@blipco5
3 жыл бұрын
lucyferina - Exactly. I have two powerful naked bikes and a Honda Helix 250cc scooter. I wear all the gear on each one. You absolutely feel safer on the Helix but make no mistake, if I go down on the scooter at speed, the asphalt doesn't care what I'm riding.

Ever ridden an FJ09/Tracer? I have one and it’s quick but easy to control, but they’ve sorted the snatchy throttle on newer models (and the suspension). It’s a bit heavier and bigger than the MT too, but otherwise the same platform but not sure how the mapping differs

The current Tracer 9 is such a nice bike in general. Comfortable, practical, easy to ride and still pulls like a train.
Good info. Thanks 🙏.
I love the looks of the naked sport bikes, ive got a naked 08 fz1, the only mods thats been done is a full hp corse exhaust system, ivans ecu flash and sprocket change with a speedo healer. Ive had a few 600 supersports but the fz1 is my first liter bike and now im hooked.
I bought a 2014 fz09 last spring for my 3rd bike but first season riding and just ordered a bunch of parts for it to get ready for this riding season! It's an awesome bike and honestly very easy to control just be aware of cornering and learn how to properly brake, and control the throttle.
I challenged you to ride a Speed Triple awhile back...has more power, but smoooth as silk throttle and excellent suspension. You should really give one a go!

Does anyone know what steering stabilizer he has on this bike?
I was looking at MT-07/XSR700 but I see a lot of people selling them and moving to bigger bikes. I'm afraid the same would happen if I bought it and would end up selling it after 2 years that's why I'm looking at MT-09 as that has limitless power and same styling...
Idk my first and only bike is a 2020 MT09. Maybe bc I grew up riding motocross but this bike isn’t that scary. It’s quick…definitely have you speeding before you know it but I’ve never felt scared. Highways suck on it though, the wind is unbearable lol
Yo I love in scottsdale, where exactly are you riding??
I’m a symmetrical kind of guy. That offset instrument cluster would drive me mad. I don’t get it. What purpose does that mounting accomplish?
Spot on Jon.
I've had my fj09 since 2016 and I'm really glad it wasn't my first bike. It's scary powerful, but I've got used to it. It's much nicer after the ECU flash and suspension upgrade. I really don't know of any better bike, for me.
I was thinking of getting a 2017/2018 fz09 but I'm backing off of it. I can't justify buying it other than it having more top end which isn't where all the fun is on the road legally. I'd stick with an fz07 and just go ham on that. Fz07 for beginner and experienced riders. Fz09 for people who have self discipline. There is a time and place for everything. I might get one still though later in the future lol

Fz07 is a great bike unless you do longer trips you won't see any benefits. Mt09 is better for highway. No need for an upgrade unless you want the extra power.
It just depends on the person. Obviously someone with commonsense and knows their potential 🙄 can have a blast on this bike. This new generation tho be best to start on a 300R. They are fun and risk factor is better 👍

Cool ride,Amazing bike but yeah might be a lil too much :P woah that bumblebee crazy
My first bike too rode it in b mode for the first few 100 miles but honestly it's better getting used to it in standard mode that way you don't get caught out when you restart it and it switches outa b mode later models don't do this very fun bike though amazing sound just get some decent gear, tyres and don't ride like a fool
I wish there was amazing empty roads like this in HB California 😔 fucking beautiful
Lol everyone goes on about the FZ09 as if you'll die on it just by firing it up. I bought one as my second bike in my 3rd year riding after my KLR650. Like the salesman that sold me my KLR and then the FZ09 told me: "Just control yourself and you can ride anything". 100% correct. Yes it is a very...very fun bike Yes you can get in trouble on it but you can get in trouble on just about anything. I f'n love my FZ09 and have no thoughts or inclinations to sell it. Not trying to bash on your vid by the way. I enjoyed it. It doesn't hurt to make people aware that it is no slouch so at least they know what they're getting into. I just wish the tank held more fuel.

I've done nearly 150 on my fz09, it's a little bit modded lol, anyway it feels like your going much faster due to no fairings or protection, the most fun on these bikes is just the sheer acceleration and its such a wheelie monster, I never rode wheelies on a street bike before this one, and you just can't help bet do it and it brings a huge smile thats hard to understand if you aren't riding the bike.
Insanely good bike, definitely has my approval! - 2019 Mt-09 Here 🔥
Have you ever owned/tested out a ducati monster?
This is the one I want for my first road bike, always had dirt bikes my whole life ...
I just got this bike and rode it for the first time the other day. For context, I'm coming from a CBR600RR which I street+track and been riding for over a decade. The torque delivery of the MT-09 is intimidating! I find it just as intimidating as the Super Duke 1290 R. The throttle is definitely "snatchy" even in B mode and makes it difficult to to accelerate moderately. And the seating position makes it feel like you're right over the front wheel which further enhances the sense of rapid-ness. But man is it fun! Definitely would NOT suggest as a first bike. Even if you don't kill yourself you'll waste too much time trying to manage the bike that could be better spent learning to build up your riding skills.

Love my MT 09, definitely an animal. Using it, or any powerful bike, is all about picking moments. Where you have good sight lines, no upcoming intersections, ect. Ride smart, and you can have a blast. It's totally possible to ride it normally even in A mode

A mode is the performance mode, I usually ride my 2017 in std mode with tc on 1, mines been flashed and is still very twitchy in a mode, I only use it if I'm going to do a roll race. B mode is pretty weak and a good way to get used to the bike for the first few days, or if it's raining. @@wymonwatson1309 there isn't enough difference in reality to warrant the upgrade, best to just drop 1 tooth on the front and add 2 on the back of your 09 and really enjoy it. if you are going for top end, best to just get a different bike completely so you don't have comparison lodged in your head because like I said, you won't notice much difference. Slower acceleration and better over 70mph for the MT-10 and that's literally it. Keep your 09 because you will 100% regret getting rid of it and make it your play bike, and believe me if you keep it you will bring it out a fair few times a year and then go get yourself either a gixxer, or a z1000 and go with something that's the total opposite way. Those look like gen 2 Tuono bars
I’ve done 135+ with the fj
I was looking to get a 09 after riding my R3 for two years, but I'm thinking the MT07 is the way to go for me, I don't trust myself with the power because I'd have to use it lol. Good video dude 🤙

I got the fz07 and love it and with a hord power intake and tune and quick shifter it rips the fz07 has a lot of potential

MT07 is much more fun on the street. I’ve had mine for almost two years and it still books it around the corners. I rode MT09 last week and I felt like I couldn’t really use the power on turns like the 07.
I'm the guy who ended up with your 2013 drzsm and I just bought a 2014 fz09. I'm thinking the exact same thing as you lmao

Couldn’t agree with you more!!! This is coming from an ex- Superbike track racer!
Best bike I've ever owned!
You can handle it
