Yamaha MT-01 : Owners Review (An absolute stunner!)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

A review of my Yamaha MT-01 motorcycle - which has to be one of the most stunning and interesting bikes I've ever owned.
It's sold now, but I remember it very fondly.
**Update 26th November 2015 **
Right, the bike is in the garage now - coming out only on fine days during the winter, as I fear UK salt could wreak havoc. However, in early Autumn I took it over to Europe and had a week long ride around France, the Swiss Alps and a bit of Italy. The sound accelerating through the tunnels on the Susten and Grimsel Passes was just fabulous. Yeah the small tank induced way too much fuel paranoia, but I think I got it to 50mpg without trying too hard. I stuck a bag on the back seat and a tank bag...Which was a mistake. The tank bag just seemed to really affect the handling and it was awkward with the handlebars. However, with the tank bag off, it was brilliant. Had no problems at all on the mountain hairpins and it felt involving and organic all the time. Comfort wise, it was fabulous - the seat and general ergonomics are great. Was it an absolute blast? Yeah! and guess what, I didn't see another anywhere! It's a keeper. Roll on summer.
**Update 26th July 2015**
OK, I've finally replaced the flakey, decade old Metzelers with a set of Roadsmarts so please ignore comments about the handling in the video! The bike now handles beautifully - light, but neutral and stable. Even the suspension is working loads better. When we took the Metzelers off they must have weighed double the new tyres so I guess decayed rubber + heaps more unsprung weight really affected the bike. Even better it stopped raining today so got a quick 200 miles in on the new tyres...And the bike was transformed. Love it!

    This is a great bike, I had the chance to test ride one on Yamaha Riding Days where you get to test ride all their models ... and I can tell you that I got blown away by it, weight is no big issue once you start moving, very well balanced and excellent torque from that Vrod engine, is like riding a Diavel but in a Japanese version ... lol, anyway to cruise around and have a fun ride this is the bike, there are not many on the road so is an exclusive bike, all heads will turn towards you, plus you can personalized in any way you want there are several carbon fibre kits and fairings you can install, look at the MT-OS kit it is awesome.

    I've just bought one. Picked it up on Saturday and rode it home the day after; 343 km. It's a really pleasant ride, although it felt slow compared to my B-King; probably about as quick as my Buell XB12X Ulysses. Genuine 2011 model with only 3,350 km showing. I think the handling is superb, and I also wanted something 'different', and this is it.

    +1990 By a strange coincidence, I've also got a B-King....And yes, the MT is slow in comparison but it's mellow and kind of gently quick in a relaxed way. If the B-King is a spoon of Absinthe and sugar, then the MT is a nice glass of port and cheese. Both very different, but massive fun. I always find the best time to ride the MT is in the evening, when the light is all warm and golden. The handling is great - totally agree. When I did the video I had dreadful old Metzelers on it, but now with Dunlop Roadsmarts it's superb.

    Nicely put. This is a bike I will keep. As I will the B-King which is better for long distance as the nose cone deflects wind round the rider. And the bike is more tractable ... and basically much better. But I already love the MT-01.

    Hello again, I talked to you on your NC700 review about upgrading to this bike. I did so a couple of month ago. Like yours mine had old, hard tyres - also the fork seals leaked and it handled like rubbish. But new tyres and seals and setting suspension to suit me and I now find it outstanding. I get heaps of comments from all sorts of people because of its looks and though it vibes I don't find it an issue under 80MPH which is when the wind starts getting to me. This is all very good as down here we lose our license for doing 130KPH so it suits me well. Brakes well, does not disgrace itself around a track either, at least on the corners. Thank you for taking the time to chat about the bikes with me, your review is very accurate. I may get a second bike but really I can't think of a machine that could suit me better until it's just too old for my aging body to maneuvre.

    +no no Great! You got one! Interesting that yours had horrible old tyres and never touched suspension also...Although the bike 'visibly' vibrates it's at such a low/bass frequency I find it's never a problem - unlike the 4 cylinder high frequency buzz which personally I find really distracting. Cheers, Phil.

    Dead right - the vibes are big and soft and just make you feel like you're riding a real motorbike. It seems, over here at least, the usual owners just pull them out on the odd fine sunday for a trundle around the countryside and then put them away. Suits me - lots of nice condition low mileage bikes to choose from. Thanks again!

    My MT-01 fork seals started leaking horribly at about 5000 miles. I was prepared to renew the seals and took the fork tubes off but a few minutes cleaning the seal lips with one of the Seal Mate plastic hook tools totally fixed the issue and has been good for the last 3000 miles.

    Hello Love the review,, I have an MT-01 and I love it also, mine has the Akrapovic full exhaust system and upgrades, before that an FJR and before that an XJR, loved them all, I find the MT-01 a ball to ride, a bit vibey over a long trip and not much space for luggage, that apart, a great bike and handles like a sportsbike, it had the same Metzlers as yours and now Maxxis Supermaxx Diamond and they are brill, I really like this bike and as you say its different and not many about over here in Ireland, Im thinking of putting a windshield on as with me using Sat Navs and Cameras water and wind would be a problem, its the kind of bike that really is unique unlike a Harley with a similar looking engine with the handling of a puppy on a lead and not to mention if you have to brake in an emergency, Owen Brennan.

    This is different from every other bike and also from her other Mt sisters! The word is “unique” , or you hate it, or you love it. I had one for thirteen years. And I sold it about two years ago . Bought another bike, which I also like a lot, the BMW GS 1250, it is a superb bike. In fact you do everything with it, is a real all around bike! Being said that...I steel have that missing feeling! Iam now looking forward to buy one again in the second hand market (or should I call it the vintage market?).

    Hey Brito, I totally agree. Of all the bikes I’ve been lucky enough to own and indeed those I’ve not owned, outside of something exotic like a Tesi, the MT01, for a production / volume bike is, as you say, completely unique. The experience, sound, feel and look of the thing just doesn’t have many or any equals. Like you, I moved on to other machines that perhaps are more ‘useful’ but I still think very fondly of it. Good luck in finding another one & thanks for stopping by, cheers, Phil.

    80:8 Photography & Design, have you fitted any crash protection to your MT-01? I was wondering which ones to get. Some people on the MT owners board reckon the PDQ crash protector on the left side is bolted on to the engine casing in a way that could potentially cause damage in a spill.

  • @80eightReviews

    @80eightReviews

    +1990 Evening - no, I haven't fitted any crash protection at all. Partly through aesthetic reasons, but mainly because I figure if something serious does happen then I'm probably going to be more concerned with other things such as avoiding being fried by the pipes on the right hand side of the bike. Also my completely personal opinion with no basis of anything, is that on the road they're probably not gonna help in most situations aside from an embarrassing low speed tumble entirely of my own doing 😀

The bike was very comfortable - no aches and pains really, aside from wind blast creating a bit of strain on my neck and shoulders. The vibes were actually OK - as they're really low frequency I didn't get white / numb fingers at all. Sonically though I must admit the sound waves made my ears feel tired and overwhelmed on occasion - I just wanted a soft hum instead of booming in my ears and this was on the stock exhausts! A really minor point though. One thing I did find out was that a tank bag really upset the steering and just having a bag on the bag seat was much better. Aside from that it was great fun although much better suited for sweeping bends as opposed to hairpins although it got me up the Susten Pass with no problems. Cheers, Phil.

The V7 is more normal and effective day to day in addition to being all lovely and charming. So, it’s the V7 I prefer as an owning proposition given its usability, but if I had a heated and lit garage, the space and the money I would have another MT like a shot! It’s a very different and unusual machine and I’m very glad I owned one. Sorry to hear about the crash and I’d say any bike is great really and F650s are really good bikes. Hi pal have you still got the MT01 how does it compare with the Bandit 1250 for handling and torque? Not far from MC myself.. thanks Dan

  • @80eightReviews

    @80eightReviews

    4 жыл бұрын

    Afternoon Dan - thanks for stopping by. I sold the MT-01 a while back - basically I moved house to somewhere that features a garage with the worlds most awkward parking situation - reverse parking, over a kerb and cobblestones on full lock - so the MT was a bit traumatic when getting it tucked away for the night. Plus I've no electricity in there. So nothing to do with the bike really. As for comparisons with the Bandit - well, torque wise, obviously the MT has significantly more than the Bandit (110 ft lb Vs 80) however, they both drive from nothing and have oodles of power at 2000 revs. I'd say that the Bandit is easier to access and use that power though - as the MT-01 will judder a bit really low down, while the Bandit is super smooth everywhere. If you're moving between the two though, you wouldn't notice a lack of shove from either of them - although of course the MT-01 makes a rather fabulous noise when getting a move on! Handling is a similar situation to be honest - the MT-01 has better suspension ultimately and while it's only around 30 lbs heavier than the Bandit - it feels more as it's top heavy in comparison and it needs more rider input and commitment. The Bandit has easy to access, easy to use handling - not quick steering, can wallow a bit - but stable and lovely neutral steering. Personally speaking as I'm far from a 10/10ths rider, I preferred the handling of the Bandit - but again, the MT-01 is a totally mad and unique experience that kinda has to be experienced....Did that help? Probably not - sorry! Thanks for watching, cheers, Phil.

    How much does this beast cost? I was wondering if the tailed exhausts and massive engine can cause uncomfortable long driving due to overheating? It's one of the most georgeous naked bike I've seen so far.

    +freddie calingasan Evening! Secondhand in the UK, they go for between £5.5K to £7K...if you can find one. As for the engine and exhausts, sure if you get stuck in traffic the engine produces a lot of heat, but as its air-cooled there's no fan blowing it over your legs. I did a trip to Europe on it last year and it was really comfortable and a complete blast.

    +Donald Frankos Evening Donald - glad you liked the review. I'm a bit short...5'10 so I think you'd need to have a sit on one. I can get both feet pretty much flat on the floor but the pegs are quite high for a bike like this so at over six foot you might feel a little scrunched. Having said that the bike overall is a big thing with a long stretch to the bars and plenty of space to move around. I find it really comfortable but sometimes I do feel if I were a little taller and little bit less weedy (I have the arms of a fifteen year old) I could probably get more out of the bike. Despite that I love it! Cheers, Phi .

    Hmmm now that you’ve mentioned that I can see you’re exactly right - the Husqvarna tank shape really mimics the tank and air scoops of the MT & the theme of both bikes is a kind of modernist cafe racer, based on torque, style and distinctiveness. And quality - the MT is incredibly well finished and from I’ve seen of the Husqvarna, it is too. So, yes, Yamaha did it first...Albeit with an added 200lbs of weight. Thanks for watching, cheers, Phil.

    What's the handling like ? I hear that the clutch is not too good and the motor tends to over heat?

  • @80eightReviews

    @80eightReviews

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hello! Well I took the bike over to the Alps for 3000 mile trip a few years ago and didn’t have any problems with the handling, heat or clutch. I mean it’s a very heavy bike so will never be nimble or flickable buts it neutral and steers well. The clutch is a bit heavy and yes the engine gets warm - afterall there is 1700cc of hot gas floating about, but it’s not a leg burner and never felt ‘over heated’ to me or suffered from clutch slip. Thing is it’s a niche product, so has its quirks but from a purely mechanical perspective it’s strong and under stressed but no way is it a match for a modern bike in terms of ease of use. Still lovely though! Hope that helps, cheers, Phil.

    Hello, thanks for stopping by, hope you’re doing well. No, I wouldn’t have the MT as my only bike, particularly if I needed a bike for commuting. Not only is it too nice to be travelling through rain, grit and slime, it’s heavy and not the best in traffic as the engine while fabulous, isn’t exactly a smooth power plant for filtering and weaving in / out of traffic. If I didn’t need a bike for commuting and/or only the odd ride at the weekend, then yes! Hope that helps, cheers, Phil.
