Yamaha Portasound MK-100 Multi-Programmable Stereo Keyboard (1984)
The MK-100 is a unique keyboard in the Portasound range, sharing a sound chip with the PSS-260 and 450. This video showcases the features of the rotating Multi-Menu, which allows you to modify the 12 preset tones via the envelope and waveform synthesizer functions, or add a second layer. You can also change the accompaniment and record a performance including a melody line.
All sounds recorded directly from the MK-100 with no extra processing.

    I spent a summer cleaning school buses so I could buy one of these in 1984. It seemed *so* advanced compared to other mini keyboards at that time, with its modifiable waveforms and rudimentary sequencer. 14-year-old me loved the hell out of it. Graduated to a DX7 two years later and sold the Mk100 to help pay for a Proteus 1 in 1990. I was *so sure* I'd be playing synths professionally for the rests of my life back then! And then the Proteus 1 was the last synth I ever bought. l went to law school and that was that. I wonder what 14-year-old me would think of 52-year old me. I think he'd be kinda pissed.

    I have it, I especially love the quality of the buttons, how it feels, the detail of the metronome LEDs and it is very robust; I use it with alkaline batteries and they last a lot I recommend it. You can also make split and play two voices in keyboard: 1- activate the accompaniment mode "fingered mode" 2-mute drums 3-choose bass voice in "bass voice vari." and play it on the bass zone of the keyboard 4-choose main instrument and play it on the right side of the keyboard Please more vids! I enjoyed! ☺️

    I have it and also no plan for selling. So many capabilities not seen in newer Yamaha keyboard in this range. It remind me a little of Yamaha DJX in flexibility and fun. Also sound is original because its digital, but has warm, analog character in sound. Im planning to make some video about it on my channel. As always great vid, pleasure to watch.

    @@alfonsemusic After watching this I'm not sure anymore if the first application came from the MK-100. I know the implementation on circa 1985 to 1989 Electone Organs for their programmable featured and or accessing more variety of sounds and rhythms (my HS-8 has 12 page Multi Menu). What year coming from the MK-100? By the way I love your multitracking of such old little home keyboards with tasteful and interesting unique masterpieces.

    @@musk771 the MK100 came out in 1984, so maybe it was an idea they decided worked better for the organs, which presumably cost a lot more. Thanks :)

    @@alfonsemusic Keyboards and organ of that period has personality and unique synthesized sounds. Sometimes I prefer them to the late 80s or 90s sample based instruments. The HS-8 organ has mixed FM and AWM voices and yes, costed lot more than a keyboard at the time, something like a little car.

    Ha ha ha. A definite thumbs up. Who knew that this synth could do so much. Well done on covering so much in so little time, and without making it seem complicated - which is quite an achievement. In terms of flexibility, this seems pretty close to a pss-380 (but completely different sound). I wonder if they would actually compliment each other well in a multitrack tune - different speciality sounds. ;)

    Ahhhh, there's my lovely MK-100 pop organ. Thanks :D Great that you demystify that infamous Multi-Menu. The thing is a true little workstation with great pop sounds. Prices will syrocket on Ebay now. I won't sell mine though :P And your disco beat shows one of the best features of these old things: the auto-accomp accepts any kind of (dis)harmonies for its patterns. From the late 80s on it was just a few accepted basic chords, and sometimes they even simply ignore your keypresses -- how very impolite! Also, lucky you for having three hands. Two left thumbs, though...

    Three hands essential when marshalling Tomy robots for video shoots - those things have a mind of their own... :D Yes, it's annoying when an auto-accomp refuses to acknowledge there are more than just major and minor triads, but this one is more willing to get involved. Definitely hang on to yours!

    @@alfonsemusic Def'nit'ly, it is my favourite Yamaha keyboard, even topping the PSS-680. When I die, I want it buried with me. You're right, I think this one doesn't accept every chord key combination either, it's a Yamaha... That's why the early Casios are so great, they have a very simple auto-accomp logic and ALWAYS do at least SOMETHING with your accomp key. You can get great dissonant patterns. Haha, yeah, the Tomy robots were great :D

  • @alfonsemusic

    @alfonsemusic

    3 жыл бұрын

    The changes sit in the "custom" slot for whichever preset voice you initially chose (e.g. organ) until you overwrite them again. You can switch between custom and preset at any time. When you switch to another preset (e.g. trumpet), you can build another custom voice there, etc. The star symbols are blanks - i.e. those buttons do nothing in that particular rotation of the menu.
