Yamaha MG12XU Mixer Tutorial Part Two
The Yamaha MG12XU is a 12-channel analog mixer with USB interface. It's a great console for smaller bands, corporate rental and AV work as well as simple home recording. In contrast to the MG20XU series this one is filmed with me behind the camera, which allows you to see all the small details of the knobs, faders and controls.

These tutorials are incredible. You've explained every knob, button and label on the console, and whenever I seemed to come up with a question, you'd magically answer it in the next sentence or two. I also love how you slow down your sentence when you're about to say something "jargon-heavy", so we have the time to process. Absolute legend. Thank you!

I've owned a Yamaha MG10XU mixer for years. I use it in my studio, gigged with it, recorded with it and it always performs well. Soon I will be looking for a mixer just for the studio now that gigging season has resumed and the MG10XU will be busy. Based on your 2-part tutorial, the MG12XU seems like just what I need.

Dear GLB, thanks for this high-quality tutorial. I wanted to report my experience with USB interface with MG10XUF. Using a regular Windows 10 pc without drivers installed I experienced glitches and anomalous behaviour in audio playback from PC. All this problems were solved installing the tiny driver package supplied by Yamaha, which also allows to setup the sampling rate of playback and recording. So I would recommend to install the drivers anyway, even if it apparently works.

I had this unit for over 2 years and never understood how to use it correctly until it broke down. Thank you for this and your other tutorials! I'm using this mixer for live gigs with two vocalists with one also playing acoustic guitar and the other playing fiddle, four mono-inputs total. The main Stereo Out goes to a Peavey XR-560 Powered Mixer that drives a pair of Peavey 112TLS passive speakers. And I send a shared monitor mix out of Aux1 to a Yamaha DBR 12 powered monitor on stage. But I've made a few mistakes setting up the monitor mix and wanted to share. While the Channel Aux1 knobs are switched to Pre-Fader and the Aux1 Send Master is independent, in order to get FX routed to the FX Block Aux1 Pre knob, the post-fader Channel Aux2/FX knobs have to be set, the Channels On and their Faders set. In other words, there has to be signal going the FX Block via the Channel Aux2/FX knobs before there's any FX Aux1 Pre to mix into Aux1. That may be obvious to more experienced users, but for a time I didn't understand why I couldn't get any FX to Aux1.

Yes, you now have a fundamental understanding of how signals are routed within the mixer 😀 Thanks for sharing, glad you got it all working.

Thanks very much for this tutorial! After viewing this, I feel a bit embarrassed because I had used a totally wrong configuration of my Music Studio. This has resulted in a loss of audio quality due to signal leaks. I'm using an external Synthesizer in combination with Cubase to write compositions. Due to my incompetence it appears I've been mixing and adjusting my pieces very poorly. Luckily, I found your channel and clear explanation of the MG10 (in my case). Thanks again and I'm looking forward to produce my work with better audio quality.

It depends - you need to do an analysis of your current and future needs and work out which is best. More channels is more flexible, but the mixer gets bigger and heavier. Look at your current (pre-pandemic) gigs and see how many channels you used on average and then add at least 50% for future expansion.

Hi Bruno! I'm avid subscriber of yours, really enjoying your tutorials, they are very eloquent and informative. -- I have a Drum setup that includes 12+- microphones connected to a Focusrite 18i20 Plus Focusrite OctoPre MkII. (16 XLR) My drumset is a Pearl VBX Birch 2011. (DW 5.5" x 14" maple collectors snare added later) My microphones are: 1x Audio-Technica ATM350D for the snare 5x Audio-Technica Pro35 for the toms 1x RODE NT4 for overheads (stereo mic) 2x Audio-Technica MB4 Condenser Cardioid (side mics) 1x Audio Technica mb 6k for in-side kick 1x Shure SM57 for outer kick. 1x Roland SPD-SX (optional, 2 XLR) (not connected) 1x optional SM57 as a hi-hat mic (not connected) The recorded kit sounds good to my ears even with no mixing/effects applied to it in post but I'm lacking the knowledge on how to mix my drums in my DAW...More specifically how to use my plugins, (Compressor, Reverb, EQ, Mastering) Which plugins are used for snare, with which order and such. It would be (AWESOME!!!!!) nice if you consider a tutorial(s) on mixing drums, mix placements and all the info you can throw at us about mixing drums. I've made a little video describing the current sound I'm getting with my drums setup, please take a listen kzread.info/dash/bejne/p4Vs26ywhae3pLw.html Thank you Sir. - Drumvisio

Hello Ofer! Thank you for the comment and thank you for taking the time to make the video. I agree with you that your drums sound great. As I have mentioned in several of my videos, I'm not a recording engineer and would never pretend to be one 😄 All of my professional experience is in live sound, where the approach to mixing drums tends to be somewhat simplified, due to the number of channels available and the fact that the acoustic sound from the drumkit contributes very significantly to our mix decisions. Likewise, the use of effects and other types of processing is much more limited than in the studio. I suggest that you seek out a recording engineer - they will be much better placed to advise you on this topic. All the best with your music 😊

I had to watch the section on the gain structure for channels 5/6 twice to make sense of it. It does make sense but I don't use this function enough to have a feel for it. Yeah the difference is that on 5/6 and 7/8 the pad is built into the 1/4" inputs rather than there being a separate pad switch for the combo input.
