I have played and recorded with my expanded Yamaha DTX900 daily since july 2011 and it still looks like new, more or less. I have tried Roland's mesh counterparts and Yamaha is easily my preference when it comes to feel, and trigger sensitivity. Module sounds are never an issue since we always trigger Superior Drummer. Addictive Drums, BFD or similar anyway.

You're totally right man, it's not for everyone. I don't use half the features on the setup I have, but I still love it because they're there if I ever need them. I'd rather have the tools there waiting for me, rather then be caught in a situation where I need them and don't have them.- Jared

Cool video. Great examples by Sean. He's such a great guy. I own this set, I love what it does and what I can do with it. The functions on this is just tops. It does feel great to. I play this live, use different voices from family guy, star wars, movie sound fx many other samples of my own cymbals and snare drums too. Love this set good video guys.

Yeah I wasn't sure who the target audience was meant to be really. They seemed to be directing the midi conversation towards newbies which is fine but strange given that the DTX950K was Yamaha's most expensive kit.

I have the DTX700 and this module wants bass on MIDI channel 3. Which means I have to open almost every file I download in editing software and change channels for it to work. But at least they gave me Cubase to do that with! These Yamaha drums are really amazing.

@headfake No, neither of you are "wrong", he simply has a different opinion. For me I personally think the look, sound and feel of acoustic drums can NEVER be beaten by electric kits. This is because no matter how real electric kits sound and feel - the fact remains that they are not real.

I'm trying to decide between a Roland TD-20KVS Pro and the Yamaha DTX950K. What's your honest suggestion? The Roland doesn't really seem that different, is it?

I've been dealing with that question for the past month (actually the DTX750K and the TD-15) and so far Yamaha is winning. I like the sound on the Yamaha a lot better because they use real samples, and the feeling of the pad is better than the mesh.

Electronic drums have already surpassed the acoustic drums when it comes to the amount of sounds and computer connectivity. I would love to see Mr. Sean Browne play the 808 kit with his acoustic drum. But, there will always be people who would rather ride a horse (acoustic drums) then drive a car (electronic drums)

Well, that was a surprisingly unbiased demo from a rep... :P I kind of wish though that there was a "dumber" electronic kit out there that still had good pads. All of the bells and whistles are nice, but personally I'd just like to see accurate emulation, good pads, and nice sounding drum libraries. A couple of lines out out to go to a mixer or DAW, and it would be perfect (and cheaper; that's always an obstacle).

I have a Roland TD-12. I know lots of people that love them, but I actually prefer the new Yamaha pads to the mesh heads of my Roland kit. It comes down to personal preference. Both sound great. I do think Yamaha drum modules are way more advanced now, and they're pulling ahead. I hate the cymbals on both kits.

Before you know it electric kits will be used in live shows, why use microphones and 8-12 channels for a drum kit when you can DI an electric and save space. Its more convenient to use an electric but you will never get that beautiful sound of an acoustic kit through a sample.

Yamaha ... you make acoustic drums & own Paiste. Make an electronic kit that looks awesome and not like a toy kit controller from the Rockband video game. There hasn't been much change for about 10 years. EAD10 was the only product that put a new spin on things as a hybrid setup tool. You also own Cubase. You could create such a killer system and even have it aggressively priced. Even seek inspiration from your Line 6 Helix range with the drum modules navigation. You do have a few mobile apps though which are half decent

My problem with electric sets is that it seems so much more expensive to find one of decent quality...if it's a set for quiet practice you're looking for, I built my own practice pad set for practically nothing. I don't really think there's much of a benefit to electric over acoustic.

Walk into a music store and look at the price of cymbals, snares, shell packs and hardware and you are in the realm of the cost of a higher end electric kit anyways. Even more so if you want to properly mic and record your kit. its a fair trade off you can make any E-drums sound great (provided they offer MIDI) though sampling software and you are not limited to where, when or how you play because you can change anything about your drums in a moments notice. Acoustics will never be replaced but there is a massive movement towards V-drums because they offer tons of flexibility.

Roland td30 is the better module and tracks playing more accurately, find a td30 at a reasonable cost. I was lucky enough to find a lightly used fully expanded td30k for 4 grand. Roland is great when it comes to build quality and tends to hold its value better over time. Need to replace a drum head? well Yamaha wants you to buy a whole new drum they don't offer silicone pad replacements. Roland or really any other head manufacture has mesh heads readily available at low cost.
