Yamaha 90hp Outboard Trim Seal Replacement DIY

    To all the people who have leaking trim seals and think this video is showing you how stop your leak with the seal he replaced, it's not. He only replaced the dust seal, the seal that holds the trim fluid and pressure is down below the dust seal inside the cap and he never replaced it and it's much more important than the seal he shows in the video. Make sure you buy ALL the seals and replace them or you're wasting your time like this guy just did.

    Me too the tool kept slipping out, I couldn't keep it from popping out. Put a pipe on like TheBoatGuy suggested and it took some extra strength but the cap spun without slipping! Thanks!!

    Thank you for the very informative video. With your help, I replaced the seal and O-rings for my trim/tilt today on my Yamaha F250. I used your pipe trick as my caps were on extremely tight. My caps had a retainer clip in a groove I had to remove first. Thanks again.

    The top seal is just a static wiper seal the oil is bypassing on the piston seal. If there was any pressure on that seal it would just pop out.

    Gday mate i know this is an old video but i have an 90 40hp that has the same trim and tilt system on it this is invaluable information for me as mine is leaking too , those trim spanners are about 80.00 here in aus . Now i know what model to look at as none of the 40hp have this trim system (maybe of another motor) i will be able to get the parts i need to fix it , the trim motor is really sad covered in rust but still works so there is another 400.00 but with the cost of a new motor at around 8000.00 im gonna try to keep this one going .

    The caps don't have to be super tight, just a little past snug. The oring and the seal are the seal. Also don't put teflon tape on the threads.

    I surely don't know for sure but most hydraulic systems are designed to measure the fluid in the reservoir when all hydraulic cylinders are compressed. It seems possible the way you're doing it you could easily get too much in the system? Of course access on the system you're working on would be a real pain if that motor was all the way down so possibly you're doing it correctly and it is designed that way?

  • @The.Norwegian

    @The.Norwegian

    The procedure is to tilt the motor all the way up and then fill up the reservoir until the oil spills out, then run the engine all the way up and down a couple times and check again.
