Yakuza's Black Sheep

Ойындар

Yakuza 3, the first PS3 Yakuza game the west ever got. In comparison to the modern games, this one smells. But when it came out it, this game was typically rated higher than both of the PS2 games, so clearly they did something right. Unfortunately they also did a lot of things left.

So this is in reference to the description, but out of curiosity I looked at all the Yakuza games, the two Judgment's, Like a Dragon Ishin and Fist of the North Star Lost Paradise on Metacritic (which isn't the MOST accurate website ever, but still). The Japan only games aren't on there and I only looked at their initial PlayStation launches for each of them. From bottom to top, we got: Dead Souls - 64 Lost Paradise - 72 Yakuza 1 - 75 Yakuza 2 - 77 Yakuza 4 - 78 Yakuza 3 - 79 Kiwami/Judgment - 80 Ishin - 81 Lost Judgment - 82 Yakuza 5/6 - 83 Yakuza: Like a Dragon - 84 Yakuza 0/Kiwami 2 - 85 Looking at this list made me realise that Judgment and Lost Judgment suffered the biggest injustices from game critics in gaming history. Judgment should be like a 99 and Lost Judgment should be a 485.

I loved Judgement but I think it’s rated where it should be. It absolutely has some of the most compulsory substories that kill the pacing and also the tailing missions were really dry in that installment. Currently playing through LJ though and so far I can believe its a 10/10 RGG game from everything so far.

It's the favorite game of many people in east Asia. The yakuza 3 hate is mostly by western communities. That's probably because most members of westerns communities didn't play at the time of release of the yakuza series, as it wasn't so popular at that time (it was popular thanks to 0). Its one of the yakuza games with the most new features compared to the previous one. It was so loved at it's time of release here...

I am in the Western side and I didn't have too much hate playing it first time on Steam in 2021 so it was like hey more Kiryu and Yakuza yey. I'm mostly gotten used to it playing hard even though I got skill issue but mostly I played with keyboard and mouse the fact the game is a timeless classic says a lot about the game which I'm so glad. However, I am intrigued by the story of 3 than 4 and 5 just is much better imo I guess it's the jankiness that made me love Yakuza 3 and I will be playing it just for 100%.

Like others, I just finished Yakuza 3 a couple months ago after coming off Kiwami 2. The first hour or so was a little frustrating and it was jarring to be in Okinawa after becoming so accustomed to Kamurocho and Sotenbori, but it was such a fun Yakuza experience all around once I got used to the combat. The interesting thing is playing 4 right after. You can definitely tell how it’s a way more polished game built on the framework of 3 with how a lot of the little issues are smoothed over- there are now lead in animations for moving in the open world like the modern titles so kiryu isn’t Roblox spinning, blocking is substantially less of an issue, and the ability unlocks are way less linear so you can tailor progression a little

What I love about Yakuza 3 is that you can see how Kiryu matures. Being the dad in the orphanage makes him grow up. I love how before he confronts Mine, he tries to convince him to do the right thing, to change the course of his actions and be a better guy. Only when he refuses, Kiryu confronts him by force. He had the same situation with Nishikiyama in Kiwami 1, but he didn't talk to Nishiki. He didn't try to change his mind, he went full combat mode in the final battle. This time, he tried and I like to think that it was because he changed and he matured. I love Mine as an antagonist as well. And even tho the story line is a little weird (looks like something big is going to happen but in the end it's almost nothing xD) and even tho the combat is frustrating, I liked this Yakuza.

But being on holiday for half of the game was actually very refreshing, and enjoyed hanging out with the kiddos and living the cute island life. The Nakahara family was great too. Then I got really burned out with Y5, but when Y6 basically copied the idea of spending time with the orphanage again, and becoming friends with another Islander Yakuza family, and having Kiryu wear his shirt without a jacket, I appreciated it so much that I played the absolute fuck out of that one because of my memory of enjoying Y3. I think alot more than the previous games (i played the Kiwami versions of 1 and 2). Its gonna sound weird i think to alot of people, but when i started with 0 i almost didnt even continue playing the series. I took a decent aized break cause i just wasnt grooving with it. (I still very much enjoyed it though . Just almost never returned) Eventually when back to it and finished it and continue the series. I had already bought the physical release of 3-5 on ps4, so i was invested monetarily (not 0, that was free with ps plus a while back). Might as well finish. Its a 3way tie for me for best Yakuza. 3, 5, and 7 are near number 1. Just cant decide which.

You uploaded this at the perfect time for me since I just finished the game for the first time earlier today. I enjoyed it but did have some complaints. The constant blocking got annoying and I also felt that sometimes Kiryu just wouldn't do certain attacks to enemies on the ground like I wanted him to. I do like all of the minigames though and Okinawa is my favorite setting of the games I've played so far. I didn't mind doing the stuff for the orphanage since I just liked exploring Okinawa (as small as it is) and I thought the choice to make Kiryu run an orphanage was one of the best things that they could've done for his character in regards to development. I didn't like that they just wrote Sayama out though. The story had a lot of moments that I like, like how when Kiryu beats Majima in the arena, Majima grabs Kiryu's hand when Kiryu helps him up, in contrast to how he ignored it and got up on his own in 2. It felt like he had developed as a character, even though his role in this game was smaller. I also liked the final dialogue that Kiryu has with Mine and I liked him as a character, though I did feel like some story elements for him were just taken from Nishiki. And the part of in the beginning of the game when Kiryu comforted that one girl that got bullied because she was an orphan was very sweet. Rikiya was great too. I didn't like that this game did a fake-out death scene since 2 just did that. My only other complaints that I have is that the running missions were annoying as hell (Mack was cool as shit tho) and I hated how small your inventory was in the game. Also you were spot on about how annoying the die hard fans of the game are in regards to saying that everything is a skill issue. They annoy the hell out of me. I still really did enjoy the game even if the gameplay was clunky and I'll probably replay it at some point. I give it a 7.5/10.

I really like that a lot of Yakuza 3s shortcomings comes from its age, but those aside its honestly fantastic. They just got too ambitious with some of it being the first mainline game on newer hardware. An interview with hidenori shoji from alex moukala stated that a lot of people look to Clay Doll on the Cradle for setting the bar on making tracks in future games in the series and thats honestly based

I feel like the orphanage stuff really is only fun in retrospect now because we know how important those characters are to kiryu, especially in gaiden. at the time, I can see it being super grating because it's not at all what you expected out of kiryu when the game opens with daigo getting shot.

4:57 FKN THANK YOU. I still get people rambling at me about how this combat's flawless, that it's actually really good, that it's "realistic", even, which is the worst take of the bunch. And how I don't dislike the combat because it's boring and broken, but because "skill issue", despite the fact that I've never died once throughout Yakuza 3 through 5... I enjoyed the hell outta Yakuza 3, and I even disagree with the notion that the orphanage parts were boring or unnecessary because it all serves to build a lot of what Kiryu's character becomes throughout Yakuza 4 through 6, and deals with a lotta real issues that orphans dealt with at the time that I never gave a lot of thought toward before playing this game. Hell, I still think its fishing is the best in the series. But pretending like the combat is actually hard and ISN'T a just an exercise in patience without even the actual challenge of something like a Souls game is just outright silly.

I disagree about the boss fights being too long. It honestly feels like most yakuza bosses fold in like 30 seconds and it doesn't give the chance to really fight them for that long. Also i really enjoyed the orphange stuff even more than the conspiracy because it felt fresh and new and seeing dad kiryu was tons of fun.

I love yakuza 3. The combat is decent because Kiryu had some really op wall-bounding, among the many new things it brought to the game. I always find people to be shallow when they say the yakuza 3 combat was mediocre because of how much the enemies block when this really isnt an issue if you turn your brain on and use counters, combos where u hit from behind and wallbounds.

This is more a critique on the footage you play in the back as you talk cause the video itself rips ass, great watch; this may be a personal thing, but when I watch a Yakuza 3 related video I expect footage from Yakuza 1, Kiwami, 2, Kiwami 2 and 3, not games like Judgment or 7, especially when I'm going through both of those trying to not be spoiled to enjoy them as much as possible Not trying to be an ass and I'm sorry if I am, but like, I didn't expect to see a Kaito boss fight spoiler in my Yakuza 3 retrospective Regardless, can't wait for the Yakuza 4 vid, that one will be fun lmao

I pretty much agree with most of what you said, in general I don’t blame people for not caring too much about this game. But that said weirdly enough this is one of the RGG games I go back to pretty often. I enjoy the low key vibes of taking care of the orphanage even if it is just walking and talking with npcs, it’s just refreshing to have one of the few moments in the series where Kiryu can be happy for once where he doesn’t need to solve problems by punching a thug (although it still happens from time to time). On top of that Okinawa is probably my favorite area in the series, just as someone who lived in the Caribbean for a good chunk of my life, small beach towns just really appeal to me. In terms of gameplay too, while there are issues I have with the enemy AI and the 20 million health pool that bosses have, this is also at the same time one of my favorite versions of Kiryu to play as, particularly with the way bounding works and being able to do some really sick wall combos, it’s a shame that you have to get deeper in the game to be able to fully utilize it but once you get a gist of it from experimenting, it really makes most enemy encounters super fun and makes the boss fights really hype when you’re able to land a juicy wall combo. Again it doesn’t excuse the AI being wack but I really have the most fun making use of Bound and I really wish there was a way to communicate it better to most players than it being a single tutorial hint you get from Komaki. Like I said at the start of this, I don’t blame any person who considers this game to be their least favorite since it is a pretty old PS3 game where they were figuring things out, but I do think the things that are cool about this game are REALLY COOL, it’s not a Yakuza 0 or Lost Judgment in terms of my favorites in the series but it’s a game I appreciate a lot more as time passes Also Daigo’s feet really got them dawgs out there, it’s craaaazy

Yakuza 3 definitely has problems but idk i just don't think it is as bad as people make out, like people talk about it like you should actually just skip it because it's not worth playing and just don't agree. It's got enough of what people like about a Yakuza game for it to be worth a play through. You just probably shouldn't force yourself to 100% it but like I'm sorry I don't think Yakuza combat in general is all that amazing that 3 is such a dramatic step down. But then again I got all the way to Yakuza 4 before learning what a counter is and to this day have never pulled off a tiger drop

As much shit as this game gets, It's still my second favorite in the series (after 5, which beats it just slightly). The vibes of 3 are amazing, I've spent legit hours just walking around the okinawa map examining every little bit of the town and it's beautiful. The ryudo boys, especially rikiya, might be my favorite characters in the entire series, they kind of remind me of kiryu in 0 and watching them grow as the story moves on is great. It's sad that people will ignore this game due to its general consensus in the fanbase of being the worst in the series. (4 is the worst by far imo)

  • @Flameclaw123

Yeah I gotta say having just played 3 and 4 (and now midway through 5) I really don't get how people think 3 is way worse than 4. Admittedly I'm someone who places a lot more emphasis on story and character beats compared to combat, and 4's plot/characterization was obvs kneecapped by trying to juggle so many protagonists, to the point that even the characters themselves are like "yeah idk what's going on anymore let's just put a ton of money on a roof and hope the writers can come up for 4 guys for us to fight." Is the scene in 3 where they just sit you down and tell you the plot clunky? Yeah, sure. But I just don't get how people think that and the blocking mean this game is skippable when it's got some of the best Kiryu moments in the entire series. I'd probably agree that 4 is the weakest, but it's still got plenty to enjoy. The scene on the beach with Haruka after Hamazaki shows up is one of my favorites ever, Saejima gets some great moments despite the infamous twist, and I enjoyed a lot of 4's substories. But I'd put 3 head and shoulders above it by almost any metric other than combat tbh.
