Yaesu FT-710 AESS: DSP Effectiveness for CW (video #16 in this series)

Ғылым және технология

I’ve had a number of requests to shoot a video series about the Yaesu FT-710 AESS, similar to my FTdx10 series. Ham Radio Outlet loaned me a Yaesu FT-710 AESS for just that purpose.
In this video I chase a QRP SOTA station and use the DSP to minimize the noise. I also show how I use audio shelving to assist the DSP.
Note that you must set the manual notch to Narrow in the menu before you use the “Notch Trick.” I cover that in my menu optimizations PDF for the FT-710 AESS. Also note that DSP settings above algorithm 3 will cause a distorted sound, almost as if you are listening under water. It is best not to exceed algorithm 3. You can get away with algorithm 4 or 5 off you are trying to pull out a weak signal (ghost station), but try not to go above 3 for normal use.

It’s true. If Yaesu would just give us the mouse control I’ve been asking for since May 2021, the FTdx10 would be just fine. I just hate having to press the Band button, rather than right-clicking over the frequency display to bring up the band popup.

@N4HNH I like all your FT-DX10 Videos. I have the FTDX10.. I purchased The FT-710 and felt the FT-DX10 was the better of the two radios. And sold it to my brother as he likes collecting Yeasu radios, he has quite a few Yaesu's. He has a FT-DX10 to & agrees he likes the FT-DX10 because it's a better Radio. the FT-DX10 is his main Radio. 73's & thank You N4HNH for the FT-DX10 Radio videos, there a joy to watch. I'm not sure but I think when Yaesu leaves the "DX" out of the name like FT-710 it's a lower end radio. What do you Thank N4HNH??

I think the FTdx designation has traditionally indicated that the components used in the superheterodyne stages are higher quality than those used in the the non-dx receivers. Lower phase noise is a big advantage. That said, the FT-710 is direct sampling, so it is a new class of receiver for Yaesu. It is noteworthy to mention that the FT-991A has a front-end that is patterned after the FTdx Architecture.

Hi all. Just purchased the 710, my first Yaesu. I have severe local noise due to the hvac, and my antennas are located in the attic. The 701 has a terrific receiver to combat this noise. Beats my last icom. I find the dnr usable up to number 6 on ssb. I did install the latest firmware; it did make a difference. 73, Bill

Congratulations on getting your first Yaesu. Yaesu isn’t perfect , but they are currently at the top of the receiver lab-test data list. An attic antenna can be a challenge. Internal house wiring, certain wall-warts, televisions, LED lights, laptop power supplies, gaming consoles, food sealers, etc. can cause interference. The NB and DNR can help to an extent. The DNR in the FT-710 was adjusted such that the original algorithms, 1 through 3, are spread across 1 through 7. You have more increments to work with.

1> DNF isn’t distorted with strong SSB signals 2> A peak reading wattmeter Numerous subtle features missing in FT-710: 1> No CW decoder 2> No Quick-split 3> TXW is in the Function menu (must select and assign to Function knob and long-press Function knob to activate receive on the TX frequency = too many steps) 4> DNR not even close to FTdx10 5> Cooling fan runs 85% of the time, even when receiving for hours without transmitting Those are a few. There is an upcoming video entitled “Missed Opportunities”. 73, de N4HNH

I’m told that it does help if the ads play to their full duration. KZread doesn’t provide any metrics so I don’t even know if my $168 was the right amount last month. It began as a 60/40 split where I get 60% of the ad revenue. At some point along the way, I hear they changed it and now I only get 55%. But again, I don’t get to see any metrics associated with the ads. I just get a deposit. It’s usually between $160 and $200. Not nearly enough to justify my time and expense. I wish I was independently wealthy and didn’t have to worry about the financial aspects of it. Thankfully, the Patreon team members help. 73, de N4HNH

The DXpeditions usually work split. That’s the only to get them. Popular DX stations in general often work split. It’s a good skill to explore and develop.

Side tone is what you get when you send CW with the radio. Side tone is NOT what you are hearing from the other station.

  • @n4hnhradio

    @n4hnhradio

    Жыл бұрын

That’s correct. But the pitch you set your sidetone to is the pitch that your BFO will produce, if your receive frequency aligns with the station that is sending to you. The ZIN feature can perform that alignment. I think my point in this video was that the other station isn’t transmitting a tone. They are transmitting a carrier wave with each dit and dah. The BFO in our receiver creates the tone we hear.

It must be said that the DNR issues with this radio have been patched in the firmware as of Nov 2023 patch. I purchased this radio in early November 2023....updated the firmware to the current version and this issue is non existent !

According to a contact at Yaesu, what they did was make the spread more fine than coarse, so it doesn’t max out at 3. The March update spread it out so it didn’t max out until 7. Perhaps they spread it out even more fine with the recent update, so it doesn’t max out until 15. The gnarly digital artifacts mean that the algorithm is too aggressive.
