Y combinator function. What is it?
Y Combinator, besides being the best investment fund, is also a function of lambda calculus. It's from a mathematical concept called fixed-point combinator, like the Omega Combinator.
James has a Y-combinator tattoo and explains how understanding the math behind it changed his perspective of computer science, startups and the world.

Oh, I understand now! A Y-Combinator is this exotic concept that blew you mind, dude! Cool. That's the answer I'll put on the exam.

@@DavidLindes that video is even worst lmao => it wastes the first 10 mins explaining recursion (which is helpful but not the goal of the video) then "this is is how a y-Combinator looks like now if you want to know more go look it up online"

Omar Thabet yes, well. We'll just have to keep searching for, or perhaps eventually make, a better one. :)
this would be really cool if it was actually explained well.

man invented a big story just so he can read up the equation from his arm during exam
Thank you a much! After your "from G to Y" explanation, that Y-combinator became far more "digestible" to me:)
Practical example : show how you would encode the factorial in lambda-calculus.
Do you still love that Tattoo. I recently learned about the Y combinator and was truly amazed by its mathematical significance. Are there other Lambda Calculus combinators of significance?
Liked the video. Love the idea of this Y combinator being a direct link to the structure of our DNA even though you didn't mention it xD
I had a moment much like this when I learned Taylor Series
Interesting but presented pretentiously without any real practical explanation, should have tacked another 5 minutes or more explaining functional programming, maybe another 5 about either recursion or the lambda calc itself, because otherwise this may as well have been the 'Aliens' guy talking about f*cking magic runes.

Alright, I understand where you're coming from but just here me out. Aliens exist and magic runes make a lot of sense when you think about them in a certain way.

But he has a tattoo! How cool is that? And when he touches his skin, little "circle burst" effects pop out! Who needs to learn stuff, anyways?
Don't forget to mention name and title of the audio track in your next video, to me something tells me that a "creative commons" and something also tells me that appropriating creative commons is not very honest;)
No explanation at all, and Y combinator taking his whole arm? At this pace, this dude won't have enough room left to learn other things...
Remembers me to my first approach to haskell
Hyped-up video with little to learn.
I for one respect the ink. It’s a central concept, just syntactically verbose (imo)
Is recursion any different than "f(f(f(f(an arbitrary number of times (x)))))"?
@cyrus-baker

Hmm, I think they're quite the same since it is calling itself an arbitrary number of times.

Well your design can only run forever, or if it only has n levels before it evaluates x, then it cannot do anything else but essentially delay processing f(x). Recursion in CS generally refers to more useful functions.
this video gives me eerie cultist vibes
imagine this dude learning machine learning ...

Apparently with the same with writing english... or making a meaningful point! If you one day understand the power of this expression maybe you'll go back and delete this comment...
Oh my god would you lose the stupid graphics overlays? They don't add anything.
Take a plane an circle the earth...time to time u'll be like never left...my gosh I ate ether :(
It feels like they just told him to explain what his tattoo means in under 7 minutes, which is ridiculous because in 7 minutes there's no way you can explain lambda calculus _and_ recursion _and_ a story about how you learned what it meant. Also the editing was really off-putting, usually generic stock music & graphics make a video look fake.
Mejor vayan a ver el video de computerphile
I'm embarrassed for this person. Powerful cringe material here.
Why go to university? - the university offers the opportunity of studying in world-renowned higher education institutions all over the globe.

Say no to CompSci.
He clearly means well but what a terrible explanation.
