Hannah, I picked up a grey lipstick specifically to mute more saturated colors. The one I have is by illamasqua, called storm. It’s a LE, & it’s still available online, but not on their main site. I also have a Salt New York palette with pans of coolish brown, tan, white, and a warm blue, to try and customize color cosmetics a bit more. The lip color you made, and applied to your lips, doesn’t look bright (on your lips) to me. I’ve got really mauvy lips, almost a muted plum, and a lot of warm nudes look garish on my face.

FYI for all the light olives watching this video, I think olive undertones are a lot more common in Asia so foundations from Korean and Japanese companies are a good place to start for those looking for a good match. I say this based purely on personal experience having lived in Japan for a few years and also being into K-beauty. The only time I've ever had good matches are when I was color matched in Japan or, now that I'm back in the US, ordering Korean BB creams.

This is so fun! I just recently realized I had yellow undertones, after constantly being told I was neutral, buying neutral base products, & always finding them too red, pink, dark etc. As a Black person, I think non-Black people are too quick to ascribe red undertones to folks with brown skin, whether we're or dark or light complected. It sucks. Lots of wasted money. Buuuut finally realizing I'm yellow/golden after intuiting it myself after many failures at the hands of sales associates, I'm having a blast. The Rose Inc is one of the few shade matches for me as well actually! I still mix two shades, but it's more or a depth thing than an undertone thing with those. I think some brands do yellow & green better than others. Just like folks assume pale skin can't be olive, for some reason folks are also confused about brown skin with yellow undertones. 🥴🤷🏾

THIS. I’ve had many shop assistants and even an MUA slap a red undertoned foundation on me despite my pleas of “I’m pretty sure I’m yellow…”. I sometimes have to skip entire foundation/concealer lines (*stares at Juvias place) because my shade just doesn’t exist or I’m gonna have to mix and refuse to do that with a more expensive foundation. I’m also a lighter complected Black Woman.

My coloring is Soft, which means it is a mix of cool and warm, not neutral. As a rosy cheeked, freckly, german-scottish-irish person I learned that when I am more pale in winter I am more cool/pink (soft summer, ironically), but when I "tan" or freckle-up in summer I cross over to slightly warm/golden (soft autumn). Another thing I found helpful was learning my contrast level. I am light but not fair, with medium dark but not deep hair. When I am more pale the contrast to my hair is higher, so I can wear deeper or lighter colors and they look appropriate. When I am more tan and may have sun-streaked hair the contrast is less and medium tones are more complimentary. Now that I have learned all this I wear medium peachy colors in summer/fall and cool brights and deeper darks in winter. It's been ground-breaking for my confidence in stying and shopping

Alex also helped me realize I’m olive. I just pulled out an older MUFE foundation and searched it in my arm and 1) the swatches was full peach. 2) my skin looked actually green By Comparison. I think the reason it’s hard to figure out if we have olive undertones is because we don’t Look Green. But a golden or pink undertone is much more comprehensible because those are colors to describe skin tones. And I was led astray by many a well meaning Sephora employee, who insisted I had yellow undertones.

I am cool toned. I just learned that when I was color matched at Sephora last year and I am 57. It was life changing when it came to doing my makeup. I used to purchase foundations that were warm toned thinking that would cancel the red, but looking back, they just made me look unnatural. Now I gravitate toward cool toned make up, and I have to stop myself from buying warm toned makeup. I don’t even look at warm eye shadows and now I know why some browns never looked quite right. Every young woman that doesn’t know their undertone should go into a Sephora without makeup and get color matched. It just takes a minute. If you feel like they are wrong go back and have someone else color match you just to confirm. Prior to my Sephora color match, I was color matched incorrectly at another store and I knew immediately they were wrong. The foundation looked terrible on me.

Tip for other fair ladies - you don’t have to have a lipstick exactly the color of lorna dune to use this trick. If you have a concealer or foundation that matches your undertone, mix a teensy bit of that with a deeper lipstick… you’ll get a similar effect!

Or revisiting the “Grungy rainbow” palette that you’ve built in the past !! Because the color scheme on the screen made think of that immediately + the lipstick creation made think of colourpop CA love lipstick too !! Not so brown or pink or peach !! I still have the lipstick to be a reference for a replacement ,I LOVE that color, it was described as : taupey reddish brown, on my pulls a little bit rosy in the best way ever & I couldn’t match it with other lipsticks!

I’ve commented before about using cool contours as blush because of how they “turn” on my skin tone. I actually used to think that I had cool undertones because warm products are taken in an even warmer direction on my skin. MAC’s Mocha lipstick is a great everyday neutral on olives. Impulsive too.

My mom pointed out to me that I had an olive undertone a while ago and then I pretty much didn't do anything with that info lol. But truthfully I didn't realize it was different from being "warm". This year I watched Haley Kim talk about olive tones and I was finally able to understand what it MEANT and why I find complexion products so difficult. I could also see why certain lip colors look more gray or dull me out. I recently started using a green color corrector to make my base greener and I quite like the results! Edit, cuz I remembered the colors I can't use are like cool tone nudes or cool pinks. I'm more of a warm olive though

I have fair/light skin with a warm olive undertone and I am following this with great interest! I’d love to see what colors you choose based on being olive. It took me FOREVER to figure out I was olive because I just didn’t consider it. I could never find anything that matched me, foundation. Everything was either too pink, too peach, too orange etc. It wasn’t until my arm was side by side with my husband and he said, “I’m so red and your arm looks green” that it struck me. The bad news is that there aren’t many foundation products with fair or light olive undertones. The good news is now that you know what the problem is, you will know how to correct for it!

Hannah, I’m so excited for you about this and LOVED this experiment. While I’m still confused about my own undertones (I’m convinced my training as a painter has somehow muddled my cosmetics-specific understanding of color theory- I see all the colors in all the things and that doesn’t help me choose a shade of concealer), the thrill of this discovery you’re experiencing is like what I felt last spring, when, at the age of 33 and in the span of maybe ten days, I learned both that my hair curly and I have ADHD! It’s truly been there wildest of rides and I’ve delighted in having those two self-discoveries become bound to one another.

I’m so happy you figured it out. It took me a lonnnng time as well. Which is also whyyyyy I really think you should review the L.A. pro color correctors for foundations. I'm so glad that this discovery has changed the way you look at your makeup. I just watched a video by a girl that talked about undertones and how to find yours. She is olive. I can't even remember her name but once you find out what they are, how easy and how it changes your looks because you compliment and not fight against it. I think we know we are close by what we are drawn to but that discovery opens up a whole new world. I think I am a neutral cool because I sometimes have green veins but mostly blue. You have a very fine eye for these things and seeing colors, kind of like being able to tell whether a note is flat or sharp. I know it is not quite right but how to modify the tone is hard. You need a good ear. Congratulations on almost reaching fifty K followers. You deserve it because you are good at this KZread thing.

I find colour stories that work well are; Dark Navy blue for eyes, Dark Red Wine colours, the beau teal shades in Natasha denona Glam & mini Retro palettes, Peach / Apricot colours, Rosey shades, rich Blue reds, Red Pinks (so much more flattering than mauve pinks). I absolutely can't get over how gorgeous your entire color scheme looks! your make up, your hair, what you're wearing, everything! this is exactly what I love about make up and colors, bringing up your natural unique beauty 💚 I definitely have olive hues in my skin so I always thought I should balanced that out with some pinks and shouldn't go full on yellow even though if I have to choose yellow matches me a teeny bit better compared to pink, but most foundations on the warmer side used to be medium-light to medium and they'd look horrible on me since I have very light skin tone. then as makeup brands released more colors light neutrals seemed to be a much better fit. and I learned too late in life that we have green color correctors / liquids now to help adjust foundation shades, and all that. I'm still not 100% sure of my tones because standing next to a typical cool undertoned fair very very pale friend I will look noticably warmer/yellow-ish toned but next to someone very warm undertoned I can look like a cooler undertone. can't for the life of me tell my vein color it looks like I have both blue and green. and some BB creams that (most people hate) has a gray-ish undertone fit me so well 😄 I'm guessing I'm neutral olive so I'll experiment with a green primer very soon. sorry I told my entire color journey hehe 😁 but videos like this are such a gem and help so many people realize how we can experiment and figure ourselves out and get much better results 🌸

Hi Hannah! I have almost the exact same skin tone as you do and yet, I am able to wear a very wide range of color cosmetics, except for very warm colors which look like trash on me. I think you would find if you played around with your hair color that you could do the same. For ref my hair is a very dark ash espresso brown. But, I would expect that if you went with a deep eggplant haircolor your skin would become a beautiful radiant cool alabaster and you would be able to pull of some beautiful grey and lavender eye colors or you could try a black wing liner with a fuscia lip. I don't believe that everyone has to stick with EITHER warm or cool colors. For example two of my most flattering lip colors are Nars Heatwave (warm orange) and Mac Snow Orchic (cool). I can also pull off a soft peach or a baby pink lip. Looking back at your earlier video I noticed you used to rock the bold lip color while these days you lean more towards the muddier/ grungier looks. I prefer the clean look of a bold lip on you, but to each their own. Do what makes you happy, but don't necessarily assume you have to stick to whatever the internet claims are the best colors for us olive girls!

I am so glad you’ve managed to figure out your undertone Hannah!! I’ve been racing similar struggles ever since I started makeup a few years ago. Foundations always swatch pink or orange on my neck, and they never seem yellow enough. I am more and more convinced I am slightly olive because people have been commenting on my skin tone saying it had a green or olive tint to it. I did post on the r/OliveMUA subreddit to ask but I have been told I am rather muted neutral than olive, but I do find my skin tone never quite translate on photos. Anyway, that’s enough of me rambling, I might give a try to the PURITO bb cream now that they’ve extended the shade range!!

But I wanted to add that in addition to know the colour of the skin, colour analysis really helped me so much because it really gave me insights on several characteristics of my features not just skin tone and how they react to colours. So even if I’m olive, I have a neutral to neutral cool temperature, I am a deep winter warm. My colour palette is different than the one you have selected for olive skins. Have you ever thought of color analysis? I think it would be such an interesting experience for you as well! I love the 16x 4 system as it is very inclusive. X

Hi Hannah, I found your channel just a few days ago and really enjoy your videos beyond the “shopping side” of make up. I figured out my undertone 2 months ago and what was the most interesting part to me was that you have to consider three different factors: hue (cool or warm toned skin), value (light or dark appearance) and chroma (muted or bright colours). So the simple distinction between warm and cool tones works for the people that have this as a defining factor in their skin, but I think the factor that is defining for your skin is Chroma. Muted colours look best on you - thats why the 2 “bright” lipsticks mixed with the muted nude worked out so well - and it doesn’t really matter if the muted colours are warm or cool - which explains why you like the Elf palette so much, despite the fact there are “cool” toned shades in it. I figured this out for myself (because my defining factor is chroma too) and since then I don’t try to “dislike” cool tones (my skin is neutral-warm) but just have a look if they are bright enough for me. Because chroma to my type of skin is more important than hue. And I think your skin type is similar with the muted tones. All the best to you and keep making such amazing videos!

When my parents had their house re-carpeted, they chose an extremely neutral carpet color. Some of the wall paint colors, which seemed very subtle before, suddenly looked almost garish. An extremely neutral base (whether its your carpet or your skin) will make any color with any hint of saturation appear very saturated. Just like contrast of light and dark, contrast of saturation can be dramatic. In painting, it can be especially interesting to play with contrast of saturation and hue, while keeping the values (lightness) similar - subtle colors can appear neon just by their context. ~sincerely, a fine artist PS. you are one of several people I know of who has a very broad vocabulary but lacks when it comes to color terminology (although you're getting better for sure). You might want to look up James Gurney - well known in the artist community as the author of Color and Light - he has an educational blog with many posts on color.

Whether you purchase anything or not, I'd love to see a window shop with you video focused on products for olive undertones, maybe playing around with the Finding Ferdinand custom colours if that would be fun for you! And happy 50K 🥳

OMG, I've been struggling for YEARS with my undertone, and it never ever occurred to me that I have pale, olive-toned skin. NEVER. And now I feel like Rain Man coming down the escalator with all the algebraic equations floating around and making sense. THANK YOU.

I am LOL at the colour palette you put up because it is literally that grungy rainbow palette you made a while back! IT WAS THERE THE WHOLE TIME!

Do you think that the fact you have olive undertones pushed you towards buying more stuff in some periods of your life, since it's so hard to find colors that match ? I know it is the case for me, since finding an actual match for my olive tones in foundation for exemple is such a pain.

That’s happened to me as well! I remembered being in search of coral lipsticks that looked good on me because I wanted to find something like what Hannah mixed there, but once I wore them they would look too orange or too pink on me.

If you can get your hands on it, try the catrice "no more red" primer. I mix it in my foundations (yellow olive) I go warm and a tiny bit darker for a foundation shade and get a perfect match

So glad you recommended the Rose Inc concealer! The shade is perfect for me and I looooove the formula. PS - loving the Lisa Eldridge Foundation in No. 4 mixed with Morganite and then the Rose Inc on top. If you get a chance to try the other shades of the LE foundation, this combo might work for you too! xo.

I found you when you were about 47k...ish. honestly it isn't something I notice often. Now wow over 51k. ! Happy for you. But honestly it isn't surprising. You have amazing, interesting, and thoughtful. It actually has changed my whole thinking. Thanks to you I am doing a 2022 no buy, I was blown away by the garden video game analgy. I know I will be watching over and over your videos from your no buy year. I am neutral very fair. I seem to can use lots of different things. Playing with my own collection in the coming year will help me really fine tune.

I have to pause straight away, I'm only at minute 4. As an Italian with fair-light skin during the cold months and a past with acne, finding makeup products for olive undertone has been nearly impossible. Especially back when "olive undertone" wasn't a thing, at least here in Italy (how bizarre!), and I always struggled with foundations safe to use with acne being extremely pink or extremely orange. And you know what brought me peace a couple of years ago? (I turned thirty in July) Finding your channel! Discovering that one can wear just concealer and make it look amazing, embracing one's skin texture and the fact that one day it could be great and the next one a bit rough. I started using just the Nars concealer in the pot and the Kosas one and now I can really embrace my olive skin 🫒

Welcome to the green club❣ I had exactly the same experience and spend sooo much money on warm or yellow foundations😂 but I can use it with LA girl blue mixer, which makes a nice green Foundation for me. Thank you for sharing this. ❣❣🙌🙌🙌

Realising in my 20s I have hooded eyes and pale olive skin really makes me realise why I struggled with makeup and fashion so much. Nothing I would see on others or KZread would work for me. I'm so glad more pale olive youtubers like you exist :) mixing makes so much sense, I just hope one day we can find actual premade products that work for us so we can easily reapply and only have to buy one product. Glad to have found your channel :) I'd also be really interested in a video on nail polish colours for pale olives, I have the same issues but with nail colours too, they often pull different colours on me to other skin tones.

I'm so glad to discover a fellow ultra pale olive! I'm an ultra pale neutral olive and I just found out a few months ago. Any warm foundation looks extra orange on me, even some that aren't labeled warm still look orange with my tone. If a lip color isn't warm enough they will all look grayish. I've realized the shades that are the most flattering on me are cool eyeshadows, nude blushes like ABH in latte and warm lip colors like a rusty rose, reddish copper, bronzy peach and cinnamon. The "Soft Autumn" makeup charts really helped guide me. I came back to add that after seeing the rest of the video, I do the same thing with my deep bold lipsticks. I wear them full strength at night, but for daytime when I don't want a bolder lip, I apply the pale putty shade on my bottom lip and the warm bold color on my top lip, rub together and it gives the perfect muted shade I'm looking for. I've been on the hunt for the perfect shade you have in mind and I've purchased several searching for that exact shade you're describing. I've studied countless swatches and I'm finding that type of lighter shade in more glosses than lipsticks. I just saw that Trinny London's Sheer Shimmers have 5 shades that look like they'd be perfect. Many coppers, rusts and bronzy caramels.

I found you through this video and I'm so glad I did! I was so confused about my undertone. Now I'm completely sure I'm a warm pale olive.
