8:41 let's just take a moment to appreciate the fact that Toph held an entire building from going through a dimensional travel, that is insane. Wan Shi Tong is creepy/terrifying

about the “He who knows 10,000 things” "Ten thousand things" is a Daoist expression for all of creation, like he’s basically using 10,000 as a placeholder for a practically uncountable number, to say he knows everything , or is the closest to knowing everything

As far as sand bending goes - it’s a sub-skill of Earth bending, like how lightning is a sub-skill of fire bending

Now this is the episode where the show picks up a lot of momentum storywise and everything comes into focus.

I love Sokka presenting a knot and being called not very bright. Sokka is always seen as stupid and useless by many people, because his knowledge is less obvious. But he is smart, can think well on his feet, and most of his knowledge is practical, not the kind found in books and scrolls. And good knots are probably important in a tribe where they travel by boat

that spirit is not too bright for looking down on knowledge just because it can't see an obvious use for it knots are studied in topology, higher dimensional knots are useful for understanding string theory and similar.

@@Lightning_Lance right? And turns out, no amount of studying scrolls on different styles of bending could be a match for Sokka's (instincts) way of fighting

This is a really cool episode, the library itself is really cool, Wai-Chi Tong is super imposing with a badass voice, the knowledge gained is super impactful and the moment at the end with Appa really hits. ATLA just keeps getting better and better from here

4:47 In Chinese culture 10000 is used to describe an uncountable number of things or basically everything (I think.... not sure where exactly I read that)

yes, "ten thousand" in east asian languages is used the way "million" is used in english. "he who knows a million things" was not giving an exact count.

Yep, *Wan Shi Tong* is from Mandarin Chinese 萬事通/万事通 _wànshì tōng_ 萬事/万事 _wànshì_ literally "ten-thousand things" meaning "everything" 通 _tōng_ can mean "expert" or "to know" So *Wan Shi Tong* could also be translated as "expert on everything" or "knows everything"

0:13 That intro, lol 0:32 And just like that, you've been canceled by ARA. BACK OFF, WEEBS, WRONG ARA! 0:58 Don't be so hard on yourself, Sokka, you got plenty of it! 2:15 Wait till Wan Shi Tong hear you. 3:03 THERE IT IS! Another proof Toph is the best! 3:26 Well, when the norm for you being some chimeras, straight up fox might not be that recognizable. They actually addressed something like that later in a laughing manner. 3:45 Sandbenders? That what I thought. Also, COMEDY! 3:47 Perfect time to talk about Audio books sponsorship. Well, too late. 3:52 FUNNY YOU SHOULD MENTION GOING DOWN 4:43 That depends on how you count knowing a thing. ANYWAY, it's an idiom. Wan Shi Tong means "He who knows ten thousand things", where Ten Thousand can be read as "immeasurable". In other words - he referring to himself as all-knowing. 5:36 He's technically correct. Best kind of correct. 5:39 Dude, you're literally mostly black. Back the hell off his face. 7:09 Can we just talk about how "not very bright" guy just figured complex mechanical wonder he sees for the first time on the spot? 7:11 "You rise with the moon. I rise with the sun" The writing on this show, man. 7:29 Well, moon technically was still present, just turned into blood moon. I'd say it's more than what we'd see with the sun. 7:33 Few minutes, I believe. 8:07 Ancient spirit, y'all. 8:10 Damn it's refreshing to see a reactor who get's his point. People seem to tend to disagree with him. And I know, there IS an argument against him, with possibility of out-of-balance shenanigans and effect on the spirit world, but since noone goes there, it doesn't count. 8:24 Speaking of shit going down... 8:56 Not as big as Toph's metaphorical balls. 10:35 Well that's not heartbreaking. I'M NOT TEARING, YOU ARE! 10:57 Sokka's one-liners are reason to live. 11:56 That's what makes this show so good. Subvert your expectations for a better story. 12:11 The difference is sand being SUB-DISCIPLINE of Earthbending, just like leaves-bending was for water, or lightning for fire. If I understand correctly, separation made for the sake of Toph not being able to just clutch all of it, as well as point out those guys habitat - they're specifically sandbenders, because they live in the deserted region. That might be questionable part of the argument, but I'd like you to remember, that Professor Zei referred to them as such at the oasis with little to no apparent reason for specification. 12:31 We don't need to have learned it by the time of the eclipse, because Aang wouldn't be able to use it then anyway, not because it virtually makes every firebender into non-bender as long as the Black Sun goes. However, Aang will still need to master it to bear his duty as Avatar later. Also because of all the things Iroh taught in the previous episode. Ah, The Library episode. Such a huge deal, that it will always feel underappreciated, no matter how much love it get. Can't talk much about it without spoiling though, so join me in my suffering on it :D

No way he's most idiotic. There's at least "The Great Divide" and "The Fortune Teller" just from what we've seen. He's fascinated by knowledge even for the sake of the knowledge. Some people are weird like that, but I wouldn't call it an idiocy per se. Plus, given he stays behind for that, there's a chance Wan Shi Tong will give him certain slack for not abusing this library. Yeah, worst case scenario - he'll die for his believes. Absolute best case scenario - he would transfigure to one of Wan Shi Tong's spirits.

  • @Lightning_Lance

@@roma540 he proves the spirit wrong. He doesn't want the knowledge to use against other humans, he just wants the knowledge for the sake of the knowledge itself.
