Laser engraving and laser cutting refer to the process of vaporizing the material and creating deep marks on the surface. The laser is obtained from the laser source in the laser module, and then it is directed towards the material. The laser beams possess the capability of increasing the temperature of any object that comes in contact.
When the laser strikes the surface, it increases the temperature of the material quickly. The temperature reaches the vaporization temperature in no time, and the material is directly converted from solid to vapors.
The difference between laser engraving and cutting is the depth. In laser engraving, the depth is less, and it takes a little part of the surface. You see an engraved surface that can be felt through touch and appears to be a 3D surface. On the other hand, in laser cutting, the laser beams pass through the object and cut the material. It can be used to section a piece or cut the material into several pieces.
With that being said, the power of laser cutting is intense, and it takes more time than laser engraving.

I'm curious to see what it looks like if you try to cut carbon fiber 1mm board, even if it takes many passes.
Just came across this video. I noticed you are engraving a carbon fiber sheet. Could you tell me what paint you used to coat the carbon with as I have a paramotor propeller I have damaged when I crashed, and i'm looking to do somthing with them rather than just throw them away.
What is the brand for the white board you engraved on? Or best search keywords to find something similar?
Matthieu, very nice and balanced review. Thanks for posting. I am really surprised to see that it cut through the 16 mm chunk. The diode lasers are becoming quite powerful, though I have heard that the wattage ratings are not to be trusted completely. Some manufacturers simply list the incoming power usage at the power supply. And others aggregate the ratings of multiple diodes, so a 10W laser may actually be 5 x 2W diodes. Do you know if yours is a single 20W diode?

As far is I know from pictures It's a 4X 5W combined. Not sures, sure they will be able to help you out with specific details.

let me ask you something, when you put the laser on the steel wheels does it feel like its tight or does it move? i just got mine yesterday and when installed the laser its not tight is too loose even if i touch it a little it wiggle. i haven't turn it on yet because of this issue
It will actually cut some really thin carbon fiber if you go slow enough and take multiple passes. I have a piece I tested on my desk right now. It has some nice clean cuts, although it definitely is browning the resin. Not sure the actual thickness as it is just a scrap from a random project, but it does work, and I didn't even have the focus perfect.

Hey! Do you have diode laser? I am curious if a simple diode laser could cut througth dry carbon fiber without epoxy with single pass. If yes I'd love to hear more about your setup

@@Anton-zb9dc I'd like to hear about the same thing. Can a fiber laser cut dry carbon fiber and dry fiberglass cloth? Carbon fiber is supposed to absorb 1064nm light just fine. Fiberglass does not.

there are some etching sprays, or if you buy them with a layer of powdercoating you could also engrave and on the raw stainless steel you could also do it as far as I've seen on other youtube video's. Haven't tried all of the above myself but shouldn't be to hard doing it. Might need a bit of trial and error first to get the right settings, but once you have them you are ready to go!

it's just how the youtube algorithm work, its nice to have a group chat during the video, if you want to have a look at the video at a later time, fine as well
