If you don’t need to replace the cam chain then you don’t need to take the stator right? I know it’s a long sentence sorry. But all you need is to do is the tear it down to the piston then back up right?

Correct! I only removed the stator because I needed to replace the cam chain. If you are only doing a rebuild, you won't need to remove the stator.

Excellent instructor, I just did this the other day but I can see I did some things wrong. the oil ring I didn't sandwich between the two rings, I tried to put one on but it would seat, so I left them out, probably not a good move and I didn't know that the IN on the piston meant intake so I have that pointing down. the bike starts and runs strong. it was smoking really bad before I did the job and it's still smoking but runs strong. how major were my flaws and what can I expect down the line? My eyesight is not that good and I didn't have that manual. it was my first time ever doing it. please advise. Thank you very much

All things considered great job getting it to run your first time even without a manual. It is hard to see the oil ring, but if you feel it there is one side that has a lip. Install it with the lip towards the back so the oil ring rails can seat up against it. Unfortunately it will continue to smoke pretty bad without the oil control ring. I would also recommend reinstalling the piston with the IN towards the intake side. You shouldn't need new gaskets but if you do they are only like 25$ on ebay.

I also recently did a video on a 2020 yz450f rebuild. I would recommend it to you only because i go over ring installation in pretty good detail in that video, and although it is a much bigger/ complex bike the information about the rings is still useful. Here is a link to it kzread.info/dash/bejne/qXaM2aSYnqjXY6g.html

@@larryc OK thank you for your reply. Like I said it was smoking before I did the job , so you think the old piston had bad oil rings as to why it was smoking. And me not doing it right just didn't fix the problem. The flimsy ring I got on just couldn't get the other one to seat, and didn't know it had two stiff rings on each side of that flimsy one.

  • @larryc

Yes definitely was smoking before due to worn-out oil control ring, and still smoking because of oil ring not being installed properly. Once you get it back together right it should run strong and not smoke. Hope you get it back together soon and let me know if you have anymore questions.👍

@@larryc Bravo to you man! I took the piston back off, and was able to get those two oil rings to sandwich that flimsy ring, turned the piston right side up. Runs like a champ, no more smoky Joe. Appreciate you man, a whole bunch. Thanks bud.

I didn't have to do anything to my carburetor. My stock jets allowed the bike to idle fine, and it also doesn't break up on the top end, so it is getting plenty of fule. I even kept the stock airbox. That said I will eventually get a bigger cab, and put a uni airfilter on it to make it faster for my son.

I was only upgrading the bike for my son, and didn't want to give him Too much power at one time. If you want to make the bike much faster here is a link to a full race kit. www.ebay.com/itm/203409946315?hash=item2f5c2d76cb:g:8DQAAOSw-cJgift6

Yes it is definitely a noticeable increase in power. They do sell this kit in various stages with a race head, cam, and carb. I only installed the cylinder and piston because this is plenty of power for my son to have fun in the trails. But if you are building a pit bike for yourself I Would say just get the whole kit for all the horsepowers.

  • @larryc

@@baileyteg1 No need to install a high volume oil pump. The oil pump in it will circulate plenty of oil to the top end. When you do the install make sure your oil passages are clear and you install new o rings.

At 13:16, those ARE NOT Phillips Head screws, but actually Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) screws. Use the proper screwdriver or you chance stripping out the screw heads. Also, an impact driver works best to break them loose.
