Xplane 12 graphics are disappointing, I didnt expect them to match MSFS, after all it is the flight model that is the highlight. I had hoped for something more than what we have in the Early Access version. Looks like we will have to rely on third parties to deliver the goodies...but this pushes the real cost of the sim upwards!

I too was hoping for vastly improved graphics with XP 12. It's early days, so let's hope for future improvements.

@@Huddison thanks for your honesty guys. i know where i am on this. i think iissues get sorted and it runs smoothly (60fps )on a half decent pc then its worth considering for a different flying experience, i could forgive the lower graphics fidelity for a better flight leaning experience.

Yep, I feel the same way too. XP 12 seems to me just like an update to the 11.6 version. Everything is kind of dead, even the clouds. Even if the simulator used google world, that wouldn't be enough either. I'm really disappointed, the rain effect is also exaggerated (somehow on or not).

Not really when the addons are typically free. Unless you want a plane or helo and a custom airports xenviro was a waste of money. I got insanely good visuals with some free ones in vr.

Sticking to MSFS.

Interesting stuff mark... I'll certainly check out the beta version but so far ..from the quick "reviews" people have done i think I'll be staying with msfs2020. Thanks again

Very interesting Mark, but I think I’ll sit tight for the moment.

Nice review. I think I'm personally going to keep flying in X-Plane 11 and hold off on X-Plane 12 until they at least fix the clouds in VR. That would be way too distracting for me.

I love flying in VR with XP11. Flown over 3000 hours. 2 weeks ago I finally started playing MSFS. I am really enjoying it as it’s a massive change from XP11. I expected these massive changes with the new XP12 reviews but it sounds like it’s not the case right now. I will just stick with XP11 & MSFS for now ✈️🚁

Hi Mark. What bindings do you use for the Reverb G2 controllers? Are you using the default?

The individual trees look great but where there should be a dense bush / forest it looks very thin

You can adjust this to a limited extent, but yes your observation is correct overall.

The problem is that the tree in XP12 are good maybe for a hunting game, but trees from altitude look different, MSFS got it right.

I was also getting that flickering cloud going on in VR and i haven't made any adjustments to the steam VR.

I Agree with you Mark. I felt like i was playing X plane 11 with slightly better lighting , not really a new game. I also honestly thought there was going to be better multicore utilization considering how popular VR has gotten where the cpu stops you from getting your frames up even if you run a 3080 like me. The clouds were awful on in my headset aswell and i use the Oculus Quest 1 with Link. Sincerely hope they can do something about that performance and those glitchy clouds asap. As it is now i dont see the point from upgrading from xp11. Good video by the way!

Thanks for sharing your experience. To be honest, as disappointed as I was when I purchased X-Plane 11, it remained so throughout the product's lifecycle. Hence, I think that what we see in X-Plane 12 is what we'll get. Coming out of beta will be more a matter of smashing bugs.

Except for the fact that the flight simming community would benefit strongly from some added competition, I for one, as long as we have the MSFS, see no real reason why I should buy the Xplane 12. Thanks for the review, Mark. Why did you land where you did ?? Love form Norway 😉♥♥♥

Hey Mark. I used to use an Oculus Rift in Xplane11 but stopped flying in VR in Xplane when I got my G2, as some controller functionality was missing. Has this changed now?

Controller functionality seemed good to me. If problems you can opt for legacy mode.

Just bought the full version yesterday. Installed it and ran it in VR. 20mins later, pc restarted and have a white and green q-led lights. As it goes right now, I think cpu utilization killed either my cpu or my gpu. Running a 12900kf, z690 mb, rtx 3080ti.

Remember that people are reporting merely "adequate" performance with XP12 -- and that's with the scant default scenery. Once you add the so-called "orthos" or Orbx or add-on aircraft, XP12 will grind to a halt.

This is the first video of yours I've come across as my interest has been peeked with the official release of XP12. What are the system specs of the pc you played this demo on?

The biggest barrier to entry to me is cost. I have spent over £600 on add-ons for MSFS which me I'm now very much bound to that franchise. I can't afford the cost of kitting out a second flight sim.

Where is your Delorean laminar? Since you are gonna fly back to the future with those graphics. I am not going back to messing around with Xplane addon auto-gen and scenery. Especially since it still tanks fps in vr and Mark was only using what appears to be a bare boned Beta release. I was Def. Hoping for at least improvements with Xplane12 fps in vr but it it seams to be even worse then Xplane11. I will buy later on when it is officially released and only because I wanna and will always support this community.

Can you do a review in vr with the B737 zibo?

How to use HP G2 V2 in WITHOUT needing steam? DCS and MSFS dont require steam to function in VR, XP12 needs to follow suit in eliminating the dependency on steam.

What's the FPS and what's the utilisation of the RTX 3090 GPU and the CPU utilisation in busy airports?

I only tested a bit XP12 demo with Quest 2 and... yes, horrible perfomance and clouds. And yes, scenery seems to be a little upgrade from 11. I hope LR improve it all in future versions but about scenarios... I doubt it :-(

Ok I figured it out, if Xplane 12 settings are too high it will crash, so I brought all sliders to mid range and was able to start vr with no crash. Thanks anyway Mark.

That's cause it is X-Plane 11 with some upgrades

Are you just gripping the yoke with your left hand vr controller? Is that an option?

Yeah, especially scenery seems more like an update rather than something than can remotely compete with MSFS. As for the flight model - yeah it's great, but we are used to that.

True, scenery is just an update, as announced it would just be that long ago. Weather for me is a big improvement, not finished but a big improvement. Ground-textures are better but not MSFS (not a fan of the company but that part is better). But as a whole 12 is a valid version number

I am not sure why my FPS tanks the minute I load WMR/Steam VR even if the SIM is still in 2D mode. - i9/3080ti/g2

do I need to install steamVR with a reverb G2 ? I try staying away from steamvr at least on FS2020 it plays well

Are you using steam VR?

I tried the demo on a 6800 and it was stuttering and stomach turning. I lowered the settings quite a bit and it still stuttered. It looked worse than X-plane 11 so I'll stick with 11 because it runs perfectly fine on my PC.

Even AEROFLY has better scenery But at least AEROFLY FS2 has great FPS.

Do you need to buy the steam version to to play vr?

No you don’t, store version (PC only) and steam both can run VR.

That resolution setting doesn't look correct Mark. The G2 resolution is 2160x2160 per eye not 3044x2976 per eye. IS that Steam description wrong?

Don’t forget that res is per eye, I was actually using a lower than default res. Default for Reverb is approx 3184 render for 2160 in the headset

The SteamVR resolution is higher than the native one to adapt the barrel distortion of the lenses.

I had X Plane11; was not a fan; happy with MSFS 2020 so I will pass on X Plane 12

I started to feel sick in VR in X plane 12.

VR will be improved in a later 12.x version (as announced some time ago). No changes in this one.

VR is almost unplayable for me with Reverb G2 and RTX 3080. Even with all settings at minimum I get a very juddery 10-20 fps. (Using the XP12 demo). Also getting that bright pink shimmer at the start menu, which is very offputting and makes it hard to even see the options. So far XP11 for VR is much better than XP12

Congratulations to the best impressions video until yet. A honestly done explanation of the current state of XP11.6. Sadly it is far away from being a competitor for Msfs2020. In short words. I really ask myself what they have done the last two years. It will be forever a niche product if Austin do not realise how far Msfs2020 raised the bar. The clouds are excellent shit honestly said. Hopefully they will improve it a lot. Take care.

Funny, I had the same opinion when loading up MSFS2020 after playing that franchise many years ago. “This is just the same game with a new coat of paint.” It is undeniably beautiful to look at, but it still flies like a cartoon and more than half the stuff in the cockpit doesn’t work. At least X-Plane still has aspirations of being a sim. To a degree, you can fix X-Plane’s shortcomings with add-ons. You’re not going to fix MSFS’s terrible flight model. Even if you get the airplanes to perform “by the numbers”, you can’t fix stall behavior, for example.

VR performance in xp12 is currently garbage.

From what I’ve seen no reason at all to upgrade from XP11 which I don’t use anymore really anyway. When MSFS came out it was truly breathtaking but XP still looks ridiculous and again will need hours and hours of ortho or payware scenery added.

Same shit ....everyone oh its in beta ...yeah that's right but just like 11 we will ask and ask for this and that and it never comes.......it's a cash grab and that's it. Laminar needed to realise making xp12 needed to be far better than a modded xp11....let's just sit the graphics aside and at least get a decent frame rate...........it's crap simple

they didn't improve the graphics engine one bit. if the flight model is not exceptionally realistic it will be a sales failure.

Uhhh... Even if you are not a fan. This is not a realistic comment. Did you actually try it? This video is not by a long shot a good review of the graphics. It is not there yet, I agree, but 'not one bit'... hmmmm

One of the big mistake that I made ever when I purchased the XPLANE 12 !!! It is really disappointing , the sceneries , landscape ground texture are so bad and look like it made 20 years ago !!! I will not spend my time and will continue to enjoy from my MSFS 2020 and DCS .

I have both of them and fly 80% X-Plane 11&12 and 20% MSFS. I love X-Plane UI (glad they didn’t change it) and dislike MSFS UI. I practice a lot IFR CID/STAR procedures and do not use MSFS other than for sight seeing. Even photogrammetry cities, look childish to me and does not justify heavy internet downloads.All of these are very personal preferences. I appreciate the efforts of both teams and support them both by buying their products as a community member for over 25 years. If you have listened to Austin, X-Plane is not going to provide outside world in details. Talking about bad graphics of X-Plane 12, have you seen the runways, water and cockpit and rain. I praise MSFS for their achievements but feel LR is receiving uncalled for and unfair criticism by ignoring all the under the hood development. At the end, it is your time, you money, who am I to tell, how to spend them.

I have the same opinion. I summarize it as “X-Plane is for pilots, MSFS is for gamers.” I do enjoy both depending on what mood I’m in.

X plane 12 is a flight simulation. X plane 12 is not a trying to compete with Skyrim. The flight physics on x plane 12 makes the simulation the best experience for flight simulation. Flying around in Google Earth is not a flight simulation in my view. I don't care about the quality of what dog poo looks like.

Sad to say...this looks like Xplane 9 mate. get your money back.

XP12 looks like slightly improve from XP11 with a price tag and bunch of bugs!! Performance is worse. A330 being featured has 737 FMC!!, What a load of crap! being on EA doesn't excuse it from criticism. I hope XP12 can better compete with msfs though, competition is always a good thing. Alot of this BS claims about flight physics is better than on XP... Wonder what qualifies? It feels on on-rail scripted for sure for on XP, Weather, wind, drag, airport elevation and air density don't matter much on XP as it feels scripted with not much simulation at all. To be honest is a complete failure! That's hard for me to say because I am an x plane fanatic. In vr.... everything looks white washed like there's a haze everywhere. None of the graphics have been upgraded from x plane 11. Slight flight modeling difference, but no where near what they have been promoting. Extremely disappointed, seems to be the going theme with most things these days.

X- plane 12 cannot compete with Microsoft at all.In MFSF you get new free planes .I have not bought one single plane from the store because it is not something as you need.Microsoft has more resources than X- plane to develope the sim.That is Why I do not want to buy X- plane at all, ever !
