XLR & DMX cables | What's the Difference?

They look awfully similar, so what makes DMX & analog XLR cables different?

Thanks for the explanation in your video, it helped me a lot since I am starting in the audio and sound systems 😁👍🏻

The first example is Afaik, you can use both either the effects or to your guitar it's just the other end has this long support so that you won't bent the cable massively lols and again the last example of DMX and XLR they are the same except that the DMX where you will be needing a resistor is when it comes to the end of loop cable not thru signal

i'm using xlr cables for my lighting fixtures (JB lighting, GLP, etc.) and controllers (grandMA 2+3) since ever and never experienced any problems. maybe i dont have chinese trash hooked up on both sides at the end. even never used a resistor at the end.

Thanks for the video. So what is the Awg like 22,24,26,28 to 30. ? I think its different thickness for better transformation 🤔

Rule of thumb: thicker is better... I make my own, and tend to use 18awg fully sheilded, wit 16ga sheild, fully braided, with 90% or more coverage when I want to make sure I wont get any noise. Also, I never experienced light flickering problems using mic cables as dmx. Most problems I had for lighting only came from a poorly designed electrical system at the venue. Switching cables didn't help. The solution was more likely installing dmx opto-isolators in Between machines that were on a different electrical system. Anyways, good luck

Thanks. i have known a long while there is a difference but often hard to tell what. Now I know the DMX doesn't use copper for it's shield wire. In a similar way, if I need a male to male DMX cable, can I just use the XLR gender bender or do I HAVE to chop a plug off and resolder a new male plug? Thanks

My blue yeti pro cane with a 5 pin, does this mean that it’s a Dmx? The 5 pin xlr splits to two 3-pin xlr cables

It's not a DMX because it's still passing audio signal rather than data. You can sometimes find 5-pin mic cables, but rarely and it's usually proprietary.

I bought 2 vintage Sennheiser MD421N. I need to make 3 pin female DIN to MALE XLR. Should this be easy?

No real trick. You have to take some time to sort them out and identify them.

I just look for the shielding by opening a connector, then heat shrink or tag the cables in case a cable finds it's self in the wrong gig case again.

If the ohms / resistance of the cable is different, will that help find the purpose of the cable?
